A year ago I did not see one pile. Coyote and bear piles. now this is what you see everywhere. Scary plain scary. This is my hunny hole hunting spot. The way I see it I only have 2 more good hunting seasons before this area is desimated. Believe it boys and girls the horror Montana, Idaho, eastern Oregon are reporting on wolf activity is now in our backyard.
-
It isnt your honey hole no more.Do you care to share what gmu?
-
The people that are for wolves, just don't have a clue. Just wait, once their population hits the goal, you won't be able to put a dent into them.
-
If you can't put a dent in their population, how did they become extinct back when all of the modern tools for hunting that we have now didn't exist? Are you saying hunters in this state have become that inept? That's rather insulting.
Whatever "horror" that has occurred in Montana and Wyoming must not be getting to out of staters. I still see them posting picks of deer and elk they take from there.
Come on, I agree they should be managed but that's just plain fear mongering there and you know it, or should.

how did they become extinct before? no seasons no limits no regs, poisoning trapping anything and everything you wanted you could do. modern seasons and regulations i dont think will give us the ability to wipe them out.
-
It isnt your honey hole no more.Do you care to share what gmu?
HAHA- no kidding. If the area is decimated you should let me in there.
-
Fair enough. But I doubt this state will ever allow wiping them out. But I could see a hunt similar to that of yotes happening.

They eliminated them by trapping, shooting and poisioning them year around. Since we can't trap, shoot or poision them, do the math. Their will still be pockets where people will shoot all the wolfs they see, so big game will survive. Areas with heavy wolf populations will see a lack of big game. If you are familiar and been in areas heavy with wolf traffic, your comments may change.

Everything I am about to say is a FACT!
How many wolves are there where you live?
Where I live we now have at least twice as many wolves as the state admits. Please see our wolf reports on this forum for reports and pics of wolves in areas WDFW does not list. They are beginning to impact our moose and other herds. The state already started cutting back on the number of moose permits in wolf areas in WA. In Idaho the moose are nearly wiped out of areas with heavy wolf populations and elk are down to 10% of their previous numbers in the LOLO. I know outfitters who have lost their business in Idaho because hunters will no longer go there hunting. The number of outfitters and guides is shrinking every year in Idaho because of wolves. If you don't believe me call the Idaho Outfitters & Guides Licensing Board and ask for outfitter and guide records for the last 10 years. Check the Idaho F&G website for non-resident tag quotas, they can't even sell their non-resident tags anymore, they used to sell out by late winter or spring. You sir are living a sheltered life and have no idea of the real impacts of wolves.
I think you and Senator Ranker could both use a pack of wolves in your immediate neighborhood to change your perspective.
-
You mean rich people are now afraid to pay someone, or can't, to show them where game is? Oh the horror.
Outfitters have done their own share of damage over the years. Land that was once accessible to the general public has been cut off over time for higher profits. I don't weep for them.
As for being sheltered, I don't know, I ran bird dogs in wolf country out in the Midwest and accepted the risks. I knew of more dogs that had bad encounters with porcupines and sticks run into their chests.
Again, I'm fine with hunting them. I just think everyone is hyper ventilating over this.

Hmmmm, When I saw the report from Washington State Senator Rankin was upset the Fish and Game were killing wolves he flipped out. WHAT a dumb a$$... He presides over the fish and game department from a senator perspective. So the Senators are all up in people's business, the fish and game department is full of anti hunters. Heck most do not hunt...
The only thing I see is if the entire country goes down and there is no money period. The fish and game will let things go as it will be considered not essential. There will not be a program for the anti's to get paid for sueing people as the program will dry up from the Federal standpoint.
At that point in time it will be a completely open season on the bad policies that were put in place...
-
Lots of areas in Montana have eliminated or significantly reduced Moose tags due to very low numbers. Just saying.

You tried to say that nonresidents are killing lots of animals in Idaho, I called you out on that because I knew it was false, I am an outfitter in Idaho and I know exactly what is going on in that state because I follow all the stats, so now you don't like outfitters. Exactly what other hunters do you not like?
FYI - For the most part the majority of outfitters in Idaho hunt exclusively on public land. Your statement again shows personal bias and lacks fact, I urge you to contact IOGLB and ask how many outfitters operate on private land? In Minnesota they do not allow outfitting at all. There are hunt clubs composed of hunters like you that control lands, but there are no outfitters. Again I know this as a fact because I have spoken with their DNR about outfitting in MN.
I would be quick to point out that I find it highly unlikely you were bird hunting in wolf country, wolves are not prevelent in the areas that are normally upland bird strongholds. I know a lot of guys who have run hounds in actual wolf country.
I will attach a photo of an Idaho elk in wolf country, then a Methow Washington mule deer in wolf country, then an Oregon cow in wolf country, then a Minnesota backyard pet in wolf country, then a Montana lamb in wolf country, then hounds that hunted in wolf country. Then you tell me how we are over reacting?
-
I just hope this comes back and slaps Ranker in the face ...He is a pothedic sheet head :dunno: >:(

I knew that last comment from GrousePointer would light a fire :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
You mean rich people are now afraid to pay someone, or can't, to show them where game is? Oh the horror.
This shows how much you really know about outfitting. Most of my hunters are common joes. They work at everyday jobs and save all year, sometimes for 2 or 3 years, to come hunting with us. We also provide a lot of hunters with unguided hunts for a very affordable rate. In fact there are a lot of members on this forum who have hunted with us.
I highly doubt if you are even a hunter. It is common for wolf lovers to try and pose as hunters, but when they have to talk the talk, then their true colors come out.
-
GP,
If you claim you have hunted grouse in wolf country in the Midwest, you should obviously be aware of how many houndsman have had dogs killed by them in WI. If you're not aware of that, you're obviously very naive.
-

Wrong. I said people are hauling animals out of places like Montana and Wyoming, not Idaho, and more accurately, I said I still see plenty of pictures of people hauling big game out of states like that. That's a fact.
FYI - For the most part the majority of outfitters in Idaho hunt exclusively on public land. Your statement again shows personal bias and lacks fact, I urge you to contact IOGLB and ask how many outfitters operate on private land? In Minnesota they do not allow outfitting at all. Sorry, the only guys I tend to meet who use Outfitters tend to be business owners, doctors, lawyers...people with money. I'm sure there are some others out there who save their pennies for it too, but I think they are more the exception than the rule. All I know is part of the reason for some of the changes to the law regarding outfitters in say, Montana (see I-161), was at least in part, a direct result of land access issues.
I would be quick to point out that I find it highly unlikely you were bird hunting in wolf country, wolves are not prevelent in the areas that are normally upland bird strongholds. I know a lot of guys who have run hounds in actual wolf country.
Really?
You would be quite wrong there. The upper peninsula of Michigan is considered one of the premier places in the country to hunt Grouse and woodcock in. It is also home to wolves. The same could be said for Minnesota as well as Wisconsin. Wolves are now hunted there, but that hasn't been the case in recent years.
Regarding your hound hunters, nice try. But most all of the cases that I'm aware of occurred during denning season when wolves are least tolerant of other canines or any other threat for that matter.
Minnesota? Wait, you just told me they aren't prevalent in an upland bird hunting stronghold.
Are you trying to tell me death by a mountain lion or bear is better?
You like facts, so here are some good ones. More dogs die from sticks, bear, coyotes, cougars, traps, porcupine quills, cars, and just about anything in the universe than wolves in the lower 48. Will that change? Maybe, but I'm not sweating it nor am I sweating the impact on big game because the two coexisted for centuries before and they will again. But you might have to HUNT a little harder and smarter to get them and we'll have to manage wolves via hunting too.
-
GP,

Naive is running a hunting dog of any sort in the woods and thinking nothing bad could happen or that the woods are some safe playground or dog park. I'll bet cold cash that more bird dogs die every year from snake bites than hounds from wolf attacks.

Not sure where I come down on this whole issue, my thoughts are sort of mixed and in between the positions being presented here.
One thing I'd add just for consideration - I DO think that the changes in cougar hunting regulations (ie no dogs) have started to have an effect on deer populations and/or behavior in some regions (like the ones I hunt). Part of me wonders whether a rising cougar population has more to do with declining ungulates than is generally recognized, because the whole wolf issue started to become more front-line as cougar populations are growing. I think it's very unlikely there are wolves in the spots I hunt, but I think I am seeing more and more cougar scat.
Anyway something to think about. Rather than focus exclusively on wolves, I'd much rather see a focused effort to get hound hunting reinstated for cougar in this state.
-
@GrousePointer, on the night of July 20th the wolves were in our drive way yapping and howling at my Airedale here in the Wedge. These bad boys are not afraid of people here. They did not leave even after my wife yelled at them.
My neighbors have each lost a dog in the past year and a guy I have met had his dog killed in his yard. This all was concurrent with the wolves showing up at our place last year. No one thought that it might be the wolves but I know if my Airedale had not been sleeping in the house that night he too would have been MIA. I have hunted cougar with him In Nevada and he chases the bears away from the house all the time, he is not a lap dog. We are afraid to leave him in the kennel at night now.

I think it's just another wolf lover posing as a hunter. If you read the comments the truth shows. Maybe it's one of the wolf lovers from the WDFW facebook page, they were talking on there about the forum. It's obvious this person loaths wolf hunting, hound hunting, outfitters, and anybody who spent the time in college to earn a respectable wage.
I know some guys personally who have had their hounds eaten by wolves and my son had wolves follow him and his dogs out of the woods after dark howling at them as they walked, scared the dickens out of him and his dogs.
There is at least one member on this forum who also feared for their life just last fall in a confrontation with wolves when the wolves followed that person off the mountain here in WA. It is just a matter of time until wolves attack a human in the Pacific Northwest. The wolf lovers will rejoice when that happens.
GP, I still say you are wolf lover posing as a hunter, your true colors shine through too easily. ;) :twocents:

I think I wet myself laughing while I read that faster than you guys would at the sight of a wolf.
For one, I fully support the reintroduction of hound hunting in our state. For another, I've said I support hunting wolves, though I will admit I think poaching is not a smart idea. Bearpaw you're a regular Einstein and obviously a great conspiracy theorist.
If you're down to accusing a fellow hunter with a differing viewpoint on an issue of being an animal rights activist it probably means I'm cutting into your heartfelt beliefs.
Grow some thicker skin and come up with some better arguments to support your case.

I think you better go back and look at what I wrote. You were completely wrong in everything. EVERYTHING. To be frank you actually embarrassed yourself.
Tell you what, go train a grouse dog, go to Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and do some grouse hunting there and ask people how worried they are about wolves. The first thing that should strike you is people still go hunt with their big running dogs. The second should be that wolves are hunted there.
Actually I think you need to calm down knucklehead. This all started because I questioned a statement regarding whether they could be eradicated and whether someone was fear mongering. Not whether they should be hunted.
But I understand you have a business to protect so it's in your best interest to flat lie to save yourself.

Anyone think it was odd that a guy with 19 posts asked if any of us would poach a wolf? :dunno:
Grouse pointer you make me sick. wolves were eliminated back in the day for a reason! Because they were nothing but problems! the wolves here now arent even the same breed and are bigger. I just can't understand how a "real hunter" wouldn't see them as a problem. Whats nice about cougars and bears is they don't hunt it packs like wolves. and from what I've been told aren't thrill killers. Wolves will at till kill animals for fun and waste most of it!

While it seems that they kill for fun and waste a lot, I believe they are killing to train the rest of the pack, specifically the younger animals in the pack. This is what makes them such effective killers. Just my opinion though

Show me where I said they don't exist here? You're back to lying now.
When you say I haven't hunted in wolf country with my dogs, you are wrong.
When you say the Midwest doesn't have prime upland bird hunting, you're flat wrong.
When you try to tell me average people use outfitters, I'll tell you that's a stretch.
And if you try to tell me wolves can't be eradicated now or ten years from now I'll disagree, though concede the laws would need to change.
I'll also say I believe big game can coexist with wolves, though their numbers will likely diminish, because they have historically.
I'll also call you a liar if you accuse me of not thinking a hunt for them is a good idea, which by the way I am calling you.
Don't like that? Well, just like me, you're entitled to your opinion.

Personally I don't find the concept of an ambush predator like a cougar nice at all.
Wolves are going to continue to be a problem which is why they need to be managed through hunting at the very least. The public is also going to need to be better educated. Denning season starts in late February for them, that is not a safe time, particularly for dogs. Kill sites should be avoided like the plague.
Look, I see the writing on the wall and have just accepted it. If that makes you puke, go ahead. But it won't change things. You and I both know it.

One of the nice things about hunting in Michigan was that bear hunters ran their hounds there a lot. Even if I hunted grouse in an area where I knew bear existed, I generally didn't worry because the bear hunters helped make sure they had a fear of man and dog. Washington could use a return of that.
Cougars are less of a threat, but they still kill pets, attack people, and in some cases have killed a few folks. Sneaky *censored*s.

Wolves kill bear hound in Bayfield County
Sept. 21, 2012
The Department of Natural Resources confirmed that wolves killed a bear hound on Tuesday in Bayfield County.
The hound was hunting in the Town of Bell. The wolves are with the Siskiwit Lake pack.
In keeping with its wolf depredation protocol, the DNR issued an announcement of the incident. The agency said hunters should be aware of the potential conflict and exercise caution in the area.
It's the sixth wolf kill of a hunting dog in 2012, according to DNR records.

Michigan's wolves are coming back -- and costing state nearly $10,000 in lost livestock
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota paid out a record $154,136 to residents whose livestock or pets were killed by wolves in the past year, part of a gradual upward trend also seen in Wisconsin and Michigan — all states where the gray wolf came off the endangered list in January.

Wolves kill woman in Alaska and its not the wolves fault?
Please read the comments on this news story;

Now some of the regulars here may remember I said it was just a matter of time till a wolf killed a human again in the USA and made the news. It has. Yet the public comments have a larger percentage more concerned about the wolves that that poor lady.
So I ask you what in the hell will it take for the wolf lovers to understand wolves aren’t loving kind creatures like a Disney show?

The point here people is they want to bring back high populations of wolves in the lower 48 and have already started. Do YOU want to have wolves near your home? Would you want to be killed by one? Its just a matter of time until this happens in wolf recovery areas in the lower 48.

In Anchorage we have so many bears in the city people are being attacked every year. We have wolves come into towns every year. We have had people attacked by wolves in the Anchorage area. Not the wilderness. This is just an example of what can happen. That is why I asked this question to see if any understood. I see some don’t. They killed off the wolves in the lower 48 because of the threat wolves are to people. Some one will be killed, maybe a child, all because of the wolf recovery program. Again; it’s a matter of time.

Washington in the future: more wolves, bigger losses, pretty simple... :chuckle:
B.C. ranchers estimate wolf attacks on livestock cost $15 million a year
B.C. Cattleman’s Association calls on province to thin the wolf population in some areas
Large packs of wolves are feasting on the province’s cattle in alarming numbers, according to ranchers, who claim that mortality rates of cows and calves have doubled over the past year.
The B.C. Cattlemen’s Association estimates the industry is losing up to $15 million a year because of wolf attacks and is calling for a “thinning” of the wolf population in hard hit areas such as the Peace River and Cariboo regions.

I would give anything to see a photo of one of these wolf lovers with their ass chewed out like those cattle.

Hmm bearpaw. You must of over whelmed GP with facts. He has gone to play with the other wolf lovers.

The facts always get them.

Palin's administration and the Board of Game she appoints have approved, among many things, the use of helicopters by private hunters to shoot wolves and the use of poison gas to kill wolves and their pups in their dens.
The idea of using an aircraft to chase an animal to the point of exhaustion, so that it becomes an easy target for “sport” hunters,

I'd rather not see that :yike:
Odds are it won't be a wolf lover, do they even leave their office to home to grocery store lives?
Their idea of "woods" or "wild" is some place you drive your volkswagon tourag and pull up to a picnic table for a snack and maybe look at a waterfall or some attraction. They long to see the disney wolf in the wild and send their donations into some vogue save a wolf foundation, save a whale, save a polar bear or multiple variations of such. They get a nice little feel good certificate and perhaps a stuffed toy. The foundation takes that money and like a bank leverages against it and the top tier takes the leveraged monies and get rich, the pittance left over goes to more campaiging.
I got a damm good idea how it all works, as a friend of mine started one of these donation places and made it to a fortune 500 company with it then sold it all off. Very interesting stuff, as such I'll never donate to anything other than a small time church or some such - keep it local
I digress - humaure (Grouse Pointer) et all: are living in a bubble and can't see anything which is not inside their bubble.
GP's dog hasn't been eaten yet, so the problem isn't real.
-
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF yes. she would have them gassed DEAD within 30 days.
-
Nope, no wolves been here!
GrousePointer, next time come better prepared. :chuckle:

You aren't the smartest tack in the drawer are you?
You are going to correct the outfitter about who his clients are?
Better watch who you are calling a liar around here, Dale is a bit more entitled to his opinion around here, especially from the likes of you. Dale owns the site you bafoon. He can void your opinion if he wants!

KenPCPilot, sorry about jacking your topic.
This is the response I wanted! I'd love to see some wolves in seattle. See how much they love wolves then. Kc I'm glad you saw that with me. I can't stand these idiots that do.t even do any research and don't even know anything about what they support. (Wolves) it also makes no sence at all how animal lovers hate hunters but love an animal that kills lots of other animals.
I saw on face book a while back a pic with a wolf in a leg trap yelping. So all these idiots are on there saying how cruel it was for the wolf and yada yada yada. I saw that and told them. You stupid sobs. How the Hell can you love an animal so much and not even know what it looks like. That's a god damn coyote in the trap!!!!!!! Of course most ignored my comment and continued on about how it was so sad for the wolf........ Maybe they should watch the movie The Grey :chuckle:

Sorry, the only guys I tend to meet who use Outfitters tend to be business owners, doctors, lawyers...people with money.
Well, I'm not one of those folks, but I've worked hard, saved money and used outfitters on rare occasion. Some guys spend it on football tickets, some on cars, some on dogs. I don't, but I have no problem if someone else does.
After reading your recent posts I'm glad we've not met. You started out with some common sense posts but your true colors have shone through.
-
2 things.
Bearpaw, that 6th photo you posted in the last bunch of photos kinda made me sick. That one looked like it was really going to chase the butterflies. (Ok, not a question just a comment.)
2. Has anyone started making wolf armor for dogs yet? I'm thinking a thick spiked collar and some sort of vest. Bet I could make a killing if I could afford the initial materials :chuckle:

Kc you sound like a stand up guy. You can hunt with me anytime
I have trouble understanding why government wants these wolves. The only answer I've come up with is to eliminate hunting. But why do that? They make a killing off of us... But why protect a wolf breed that was never here to begin with? If they wanted wolves the could least protect the smaller ones that were here to begin with...... I have yet to ever talk to a hunter that supports wolves in anyway. Eliminate them all!

A few guys are putting those spike collars on their dogs hoping they might help save their life. If anyone wants to make a good piece of change, come up with a sure fire way to kill wolves. It will sell like hotcakes at IHOP now that wolf hunting is opening up everywhere. :twocents:

You could skin a porcupine and then put that over the dog armor.....maybe even add something to the quills.
-
You mean rich people are now afraid to pay someone, or can't, to show them where game is? Oh the horror.
Outfitters have done their own share of damage over the years. Land that was once accessible to the general public has been cut off over time for higher profits. I don't weep for them.
As for being sheltered, I don't know, I ran bird dogs in wolf country out in the Midwest and accepted the risks. I knew of more dogs that had bad encounters with porcupines and sticks run into their chests.
Again, I'm fine with hunting them. I just think everyone is hyper ventilating over this.

sorry Im chiming in a little late. I grew up hunting the mid west where did you find wolf country in the mid west
-

This would be a possibility if it was one animal. The problem the animals run into is the pack. One wolf grabs at the face while the others come up behind and hamsting the prey. The prey doesn't win, they will always pick one off out of the heard. It will provide good cougar management as they will start to stave off.
-
A good way to kill wolves would be a blood popsicle on a quadruple bladed knife

I shot a buck last weekend. And I have a big bull tag in the blues. Do you hunt the east side much? Probably should have sent this in a pm.... Probably shouldn't talk about ways to kill wolves on here... Who knows how many tree huggers are on here. With how many wolves are around we'll have a season at some point. Hopefully there's still some deer and elk left!
-
Rebel,
Wisconsin is filthy with them to the point where they have their first hunt this year. Lots of tags too. They've creamed the deer population. Minnesota and the UP of Michigan have them too.
-
This has really taken off!!! Some of those pics bearpaw :yike: You could tell some of those animals were still alive!!!!

Sorry for the gore but you are correct, several of the attacked animals were alive, the truth is sometimes a hard thing to face, but people need to see what is really happening!
Some of McIrvins cattle were still alive when they found them too, not sure if they still are.

Sorry I had to make the 100th post. as to the PM no this information was to be shared with everyone. As far as wolf season in this state I honestly never believe it will happen. I live in Olympia the tree hugger capital of Washington with Evergreen State College nearby. There would be too many protests and too many politicians with their tails between their legs to allow that happen. Just look at our senator friend from Orcas Island.
-
I don't know anything about hunting dogs but I think the best way to protect them from wolves would be to have a back up pack of catch dogs. Bringing a bigger army might win the war.

In Germany (I am pretty sure it is Germany), they use Great Danes for wolf hunting.
-
The *censored*ty thing is that when we buy our over priced hunting permits and all that garbage we are paying for wolf reintroduction. The greenies at the game department have a plan. They know that big game population cant survive with humans hunting and also wolfs hunting. so when populations get too low what happens they restrict hunting for humans till they say they must close it. call me crazy but its going to happen.
-
Elkrack I think you're right.... But ill fight till I die to keep hunting alive!
-
All I know is that this could be the end of washington hunting as we know it.
