Came home from work this morning and couldn't find my two newly weaned bull calves. They are only in a 100'x200' pen attached to my barn. I came around the corner and the horses were staring at the edge of my property line at the brush. To my amazement two wolves ran towards me. I snapped a pic with the camera phone then ran into the house and grabbed my camera and a pistol. I came back and they were still there just staring into the brush when out pops my two calves. The brush they came out of was actually 8' tall blackberry briars which I thought was wierd. Then all of the sudden the two wolves started chasing and hamstringing my calves. I fired a shot to stop them. I couldn't shoot at them cause they were right on my animals. They ran off and I'm here showing you the pics. Of course my card reader will not work but I plugged the camera into he TV and took some pics with my phone. Pretty shaken up so say the least. Oh ya I live in Castle Rock, Wa....
-
I would report that to the WDFW immediately.
-
After thinking about it awhile I'm pretty sure the calves had been chased into the briars and the wolves were waiting for them to come back out. They have manure all over their butts too and were pretty shaken up when they ran to the barn....
-
I would report that to the WDFW immediately.
:yeah:
-
Can you text me the pics from your phone and I can get them posted for you
-
Skinner, do you mind if I merge this topic with our wolf sightings topic?
Also what GMU is that?
-
The encounters just keep becoming more and more apparent here in WA... glad no major harm came from them, too bad you couldn't put one of them fu$#%rs down.
-

Amazing! Those bastages are in our backyard now. Bet they will say it was a German shepard or huge yote. Thanks for posting
-
Unit 504 stella. Do whatever you want Dale. Cant get through to anyone ar wdfw. Pretty frustrating
-
That is why someone needs to capture a pair of them and transplant them to the island of Mr. Ranker.

oh hell count me in, i built a sweet big ass live trap that i can let someone use, you can use it skinner if ya want, maybe you could live trap one and then take it to the govenors house :dunno:
-
Wow. Glad they didn't kill your animals. They'll be back... Call wdfw immediately and report that! Glad you got pics! I would have just grabbed the gun!

not sayn its not a wolf tho, could be,but i kinda hope not :twocents:
-
Was it a grey one and a black one? Hard to see much in the pictures
-
That is insane! Be safe out there, and :mgun:
-

That's what I am seeing. Took me a couple times looking to realize the pic with the cows actually has the wolves at thier feet too
-
what is the legality of shooting them? I know i would shoot first and ask later but i was just wondering?
-
Western Washington is still federally protected and state protected. That's why it cost the White's so much, their area was not federally delisted like the more eastern part of Washington.
This state needs to be delisted and people allowed to protect their property. :twocents:
-
what is the legality of shooting them? I know i would shoot first and ask later but i was just wondering?
I would shoot them, and assume they are dogs, not wolves. (Since there are no wolves on this side of the mountains, yet).
If they turned out to be 100% wolf, oh well. We all know the only good wolf is a dead wolf.
Oh, and as far as the legality of it, I think it is legal to shoot wolves in order to protect livestock. But don't quote me on that.
-
I would say if they are in Castle Rock then they've been all around Rainier and St. Helens

I would think that if it was legal the McIrvins would have solved their wolf problem themselves rather than waste time with WDFW? :dunno:
-
I would think catching them in the act would be different than just finding a dead calf.
-
Looks like a feral dog chasing livestock... BOOM!

I think the legal part is 'in the act', so he would be good to shoot. The McIrvins (to my knowledge) are at the scene when it is happening. But have to check all the laws.
-
it legal to kill dogs(even one with an owner) if they are damaging property so i would hope that it would apply to wolfs aswell
-
:yike: :yike: :yike: that's just crazy! Too bad you could not nail them with your gun :bash:
-
I will post the originals from the camera tonight. Waiting on a call from the warden
-
I will go on wolf patrol for you if you need an extra set of eyes over your heard ;)
-
Looks like a feral dog chasing livestock... BOOM!
I agree.
-
Knew it wouldn't be long till they started over here... Glad you and your animals made it out alive.... They will be back... They were just testing....
-
SKINNER ...Help me out here a little ..1st question is .. How far apart are those strans on the Barbed wire on the fence ? 2nd question is .. What is that black thing lying down at the wolfs feet ? Just need more info ...thats all ! ;)
-
Picture doesn't look like a wolf to me.
-
Must be a Black one lying at its feet :dunno: :chuckle:
-
That dog in the picture isn't a wolf, much like that cat in a certain older picture wasn't a bobcat
-
Picture is of a black and grey. Grey is stretched out and is deceiving. Black is laying on the ground at his feet. I was 50 yards max! Have seen plenty of wolves , dogs, yotes to know these were wolves or hybrids. Either way it needs to be documented. Barb wire is roughly 12 inches a part. Gonna see if i can find some hair...
-
time to sit in the barn armed with a call in the back yard!
-
Wildlife provided a number for Skinner to contact so they can investigate. PM sent.
They said if you get a recording to leave your info and they will get back to you. They want to follow up.
-
My first thought is hybrids. They'll be back, get yourself a 22-250 if you don't already have one.
-
I dont doubt they may be. hybrids. I have been in contact with wdfw. The sheriffs dept refered me to them too. Just want some documentation when my animals are attacked.
-
Where are the Hybirds comming from?
-
Where are the Hybirds comming from?
If they are hybrids, someone turned them loose :twocents:
-
I would shoot them in a heartbeat given the chance.
-
I hate to say it, but, it's a coyote. Doesn't have the characteristics of a wolf. Just my opinion, but the picture looks like a coyote. Sorry. I've seen wolves in real life.
-

It doesn't really have a long narrow snout :dunno: What about the fluffy black one :chuckle:

Jet black coyote?
-
Besides, it's not big enough looking.
-

That is why we are thinking hybrid :dunno: But it is on a camera phone.
-
Looks like a yote to me :dunno:
-
The fluffy black one just looks weird, I can't see it whatsoever other than a black fur ball. Not very wolf looking though. The grey one looks very much like a yote. Neither of them look big enough to be a wolf when compared to the size of the calf, but again the pictures make it really hard to see much. I do believe the OP that he saw something that wasn't a coyote.
-
Most wolves stand with a level back. Most coyotes stand taller at the front shoulder.
Look at your pictures again and tell us what you think .
-
The only way to find out for sure is to shoot the SOB's
-
that aint no damn coyote, how many black coyotes has anyone seen, NONE, its a wolf, or a hybrid, it isnt the first time some of us have heard there are wolves in that neck of the woods...... skinner, since it is beleived to be a coyote or if the wdfw says its a coyote the by golly you get to shoot the hell out of it.. shoot straight, cant wait for pics......
-
I hunted a black coyote for two years here in the Wenas. Almost got him a couple times. One smart bugger. That being said, I now need to go read the last 3 pages and see what I am talking about.
-
how many black coyotes has anyone seen, NONE,
really?
-
Hybrids or crosses or ferals. Leaning towards coyote/dog cross. Hard to say with that small of pic. Not wolf. At least not pure timberwolf. Sorry. Snout is wrong, size is wrong, legs are wrong, shoulders are wrong. They'd have been dead in a heartbeat. Glad you saved your calves. (my opinion of course)

WRONG !
-
and I have seen at least 4 in my life and 1 pure white one which that day I had no gun :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
I have a photo of mine live somewhere. Probably on my old computer. Nice trophy bowhunter! That would make a dandy rug.
-
not sure what numbers you tried - but if you provide your contact information, I will make sure an officer promptly investigates this
-
That first pic shows an animal with a back that is sloping down towards the rear. That's usually man made (as in caused by poor dog breeding). Coyotes and wolves usually have a more level back than that.
If you can find tracks, look to see if they are in a straight line. Meandering tracks generally indicate a domestic dog, more straight line is usually a wolf or yote.
I'm sure they could be found in Rastle Cock, but I'm thinking the first confirmed sighting will be more likely in Toutle.
Good luck, either way you have a potential problem there.
-
bowhunter45, i dont doubt that thats a coyote, you seem to know your *censored*, but at first look that black coyote in your pic looks like a pic of a heeler type dog, to be honest i hope that the pic skinner took well i hope it is a ferral dog or a yote so he can blast the crap out of it without gettn his whole life taken away.....
-
Look who is back  Go away Grizzly Bears!
-
The news should be all over this...
And the point should be how a hunter was responsible, took a warning shot to protect his property and contacted the officials. It would be good press....but, not going to happen.
I lean towards NOT being a protected wolf and OK to kill. I would have and let the authorities sort it out....especially with pics.
-
that aint no damn coyote,
Well its not a wolf either.
If that is a wolf those CALFS are 8' to the shoulder.
The critters in that picture are 35-40lbs tops.
-
It wouldn't be good press because they are not wolves. Hunters/outdoorsman would look rather silly.
-
Castle Rock? :yike:
-
Castle Rock? :yike:
Yes, there are coyotes in Castle Rock :yike:

Just teasin ya man ................haha
-
I'd say there are coyote dog crosses there too. :)
-

Yep- A few are looking rather silly anyway.
-
I would bet hybrids. We have had a few coydogs around here. We had one litter here that had about 6-7 pups. Some looked like normal yotes and others were almost all black. I bet there daddy was a German Shepard.
-
Looks like it in the hips. I'd like to see the hair better.
-
O.K So what happened with the investigation ? I also believe coyotes crosss breed with dogs ...One thing about coyotes you can count on is the pointy nose ...If you seen or killed enough coyotes you know their is no mistaking them ...I am not sure what you have pictures of but I am not convinced it is a wolf .. But Like I said , where is the report ?
-
After making some phone calls and doing some research I have was told that a neighbor had been raising "wolf-dogs." When I drove by their home the lot appeared empty. I have a 45 lb heeler and a 60 lb lab and both animals were bigger than them. I should have waited a while to post my situation but was pretty shaken when I saw them hanging from the rib cage and hip of my calves. I got a little tunnel vision. Those calves are 700 and 800 lbs and have never seen a coyote try and take down a healthy animal of that size.
If I had known they had my calves pinned down in the briars I would have shot them onsite. They had full intent of taking one down. The calves had apparently been ran through the night. They both had diarrhea and when called to the barn for grain just layed down and didn't eat. I admit I should have wrote my story up differently. Hope this clears things up.
-
Wow....pretty crazy. I would hope you had a conversation with the neighbor!
-
Not faulting you one bit for your observation. Adrenaline is flowing and *censored* is hitting the fan. I have critters and have been raised with them my whole life. I've got an interesting moose/cougar/mule story for you sometime. Coyotes probably wouldn't have harassed your "calves" of that size. Not likely anyway. Hybrids, coydogs, or feral dogs would for sure. You are probably in for more trouble if they dumped a bunch of their critters lose in your hood. "The Pack" will be back. Hopefully the sheriff deals with it
-

I have NEVER seen a yote go after a cow, or calf, let alone an entire pack even attempting it. Been around cattle all my life, and if there are coyotes in the field they stay clear of the cows, they would get thier :spank_butt: if they ever tried to mess with one of them. If not wolves, hybrids or some sort of cross. Not coyote.
-
how are the calves doin now? atleast if they come back you have all rights to shoot them on sight, good luck to ya sir
-
Maybe it's different in the South but I have seen numerous black/dark colored yotes; I would say 1 out of 8. I have also seen yotes go after cows. I have never seen a single do this, but have seen a pair as well as packs of up to 8. I wont comment on what I see in the pics, because I have no idea. need better pics.
