Went out with a buddy sunday morning, we get to our spot around 550am... Right when we get out of the car we hear something HUGE in the brush about 20 yards away. My buddy who has only hunted birds almost shat his pants hahaha. We quietly got ready... could still hear the rustling around mixed with some low grumbles so we decided to stay right in the area until sun up. As the sun came up we quietly moved to where the sounds were coming from, then all of a sudden we hear an extremely loud snort weeze type of sound... At this point we are both extremely excited and the heart was racing! Day light is just coming through enough to see fairly clearly, so i position myself right behind a bush/tree and take a peak around to see this beast... All i see staring back at me is two eyes and a giant grey muzzle/face.... I looked at my friend, said "thing thing is old and HUGE!!!" when i turn back around it is slowly waddling away then slowly turns broadside.... I pull the hammer back, get him in my sights aaaaannnddd... MOOOOOOO.... IT WAS A FREAKIN COW THE ENTIRE TIME, ear tag, branded and all, yep, in the pitch dark we were convinced this was a 600lb bear making all sorts of noises hahaha. :bash: :bash: :bash:
We were at about 3800ft so needless to say a bit confused why there was a cow right there.
Soooo this leads to the question, am i in the wrong area...? Still fairly new to the WA hunting scene, so ive stuck to one area(teanaway) instead of hoping all around. I saw one bear a few weeks ago during early archery, but didnt notice it until it was running away after I spooked it. The area im in has lots of wild blueberries, lots of ripped up tree stumps etc... but I havnt seen any fresh bear scat in weeks. Sooo am i wasting my time?
Needless to say it was a funny morning out.

:chuckle: i was in the sinlahekin unit this weekend and was fooled many times by range cows. Kept hoping one might be a bear but no luck.

Glad I'm not the only one.... :chuckle: Sounds like a good area with all the berries...
Last year I was hunting a burn and that was like a life size pile of pick up sticks.... A cow calf was moving about in it and had me swearing it was a huge bear for almost 3 hours.... :chuckle:

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: you're off to a good start. keep learning your area and keep at it and you're not hte only one to ever be fooled by domestic wildlife. :chuckle:

its funny and not funny I see lots of cows out there and always think if a guy is gonna screw up I can see them shooting an angus but not a human....then we stumble on some carcasses :dunno: I usually note ear tag numbers general location and then pop an email to wdfw and the brand inspectors office.....about all I can do.... we also found a dog ( best guess a german shepherd based on hair color and texture of what was left and general size of carcass )

I was in Teanaway this weekend, as usual on Opening Day. We were up on the Red Mountain ridge, and I stalked what I thought was a bear for about 200 yards and an hours worth of time, to find out it was a dark colored cow calf. I'm usually a pretty good judge when it comes to Cow or Wild Animal, as I've hunted Teanaway and Naneum my whole life, and the area is packed with range cows... but there is a first time for everything!
