well she got it yesterday evening. I'm gunna let her share the story.
This season I got my one year license defferal, and went out with Joe. We got up at the butt crack of dawn opening day (for sure not my forte), hunted all day, hiked ten miles, and didn't see a thing. Day two we slept in till 8 (oops ;) ), but we still went out. We went out to a pretty secluded spot and hiked for a while, and found a five dollar bill in the middle of the woods. Then, I got the poop scared out of me by a dang grouse... We didn't see anything there so we went to another one of Joe's spots. We're trecking along, beating the brush, and mind you Joe's a good 10-11 inches taller than me, So I'm getting frustrated climbing over fallen tree's while he steps over them. We hear some movement out in the brush, so we both freeze and start looking and listening. I point at the deer and get excited, and look to Joe for reassurance. He tries to locate the deer but from his point of view it's behind a tree. I threw up my gun and took the shot and try and see through the smoke. We heard the crashing, leaving toward the right. As we're trying to see where she was headed, out walks a buck 20 or so yards to the left. I wasn't sure I got the first one, so I didn't want to shoot at the buck (not like I could have reloaded fast enough). We go looking where she was standing when I shot her and there was no sign of blood or fur and we searched the area and no luck. I woulda kicked myself in the butt if I could have reached! So we headed out and kept hunting but didn't end up seeing anything else that day. Day three we go out and on the way to our first spot we see a good sized doe in a field. The owners (an elderly couple who between the two of them probably had 10 teeth) just so happened to be out gardening so we pulled over and I asked the lady if I could harvest a deer out of her field, only to be told that her place was a "safe zone". So we keep going and in another yard was a spike and a doe, we keep going and crossing the road were three does! So we get to the first spot and we start beating the brush. 15-20 minutes in, Joe points ahead and whispers "Doe". So I look, and low and behold... Guess who is to short to see over the bushes. Yeah, that would be me. So as I'm trying to get to higher ground and see this doe, out walks another... perfectly broadside from what I'm told... I wouldn't know, I couldn't see. So we just laugh it off and try to follow the direction they went. We ended up spooking them way to far, so decided to try another spot. We walked around all day, went home and took a nap and headed back out. We didn't see anything, and there was only around 20 minutes left of shooting light left so we decided to head out. I took the cap off the gun and got in the truck and as we were driving out I spotted a doe out on the edge of the clear cut. So I jump out and am fumbling trying to get the cap back on. I shoot, at around 40 yards, and she jumps like four feet in the air, then so calmly just walks behind a brush pile and out the other side, then takes a leaf off a little tree like nothing happened. Joe was watching her, while I reloaded, but we lost sight of her behind some brush piles. We start looking around for blood or fur and maybe even her. While looking around we spot her ears, and then she turns and looks at us. She's bedded down, so I was sure I hit her. I didn't want her to suffer so I went ahead and took another shot at 20 yards. She jumped up and took off for about 15 yards then comes back 5 or so backwards kicking her back feet, then dropped. We waited a few minutes and then approached her. She was a toad! I was so excited I couldn't contain myself, I was hugging Joe, and admiring my first deer! As we were checking her out, we see that there was only one bullet hole! I must have missed her the first shot and just scared her so bad she decided to bed down and try to hide in a clear cut. I petted her head and thanked her, thanked God too! And Joe of course. I guess third time really is the charm! :chuckle: We dragged her out to a main trail and gutted her (with a lot of Joe's help) , and got her in the bed of the truck. We got her home and weighed her at 110lbs. Then Joe started the skinning around the legs and I finished it. Then we took her up to the family friend/taxidermist and hung her in his freezer. Her skull is getting european mounted as we speak.
