I ended up with an unexpected day off wensday, so I hit the woods. In the morning I located an apple orchard that was getting hit hard so decided to sit on it that night. This bear waited till the last half hour of shooting light before showing up. I knew he was big because his belly looked like it was only about six inches from touching the ground when it was standing there but when I walked up on him after he expired, he just kept getting bigger the closer I got. He measured out six foot five inch's from tail to nose.

Yeah, it wasn't the easiest thing to get him to the truck. I only had to drag him fifty yards to the road
but it took me over an hour. I honestly could only budge it a foot at a time. Luckily there was a ditch next to the road and I was able to back my truck down into it and when I lowered my tailgate it was level with the ground, otherwise I would never been able to get it in the truck by myself.

Good thinking......any idea what your bear weighed? Hanging weight or live?

shot with a 270 and the butcher wouldn't weigh it before being skinned

What was your hanging weight at the butcher. My bear was 125 bone in with an estimated "on the paw" weight of about 250. Your bear looks way bigger than mine.

We found that to be quite true at 50%. When guiding on the coast we tried to take clients bear to the Bubblebee plant to have them weighed before gutting when possible. After removing the hide, head and guts they would be very close to half the weight. Though late season bear with a good 2" layer of fat would mess up that calculation. But heck, padding the numbers on those bear never led to any complaints :chuckle:

Good bear for sure ...good job !!
