Title: Any Word on CoHo in the SnoHo??
Post by: trippledigitss on October 05, 2012, 08:59:39 AM
Anyone fishing the Ho yet? I've seen boats in there and a few rollers just crossing over the bridge on 9. Last weekend in the salt was really slow so I was planning on hitting the SnoHo this week. Not sure if its too early, too low, too... anything but hot? Or maybe I will hit the mouth, I'm thinking there is a whole freaking cluster packed up in the bay just out of the mouth waiting for a good rain to shoot up the river?  :dunno:

Anyone doing well in the river? Any useful advice you can give? (just go ahead and give me the advice and I'll grade it useful or not...)  :chuckle:  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

There are silvers in there clear up past Snohomish, have been for weeks! River is the clearest I have ever seen it, we managed 2 two weeks ago with about 11 more that just followed our offerings back to the boat...

Good luck, go get em

Good to know - thanks for the info. I have limited time Sunday so I think I will try the river vs the salt. I'll let you know if we do any good. Thanks again!

Oh there is fish in the river but I could not get them to bite for anything. They were so freaking thick in some spots they were damn near hitting the boat, the water was boiling with fish like humpy season. We pulled plugs, threw spinners, jigs, 50/50 dick nites, buzz bombs - not a DAMN THING! I got a bump on jig, I dont know if it was even on purpose but I wasnt able to put the wood to him...  :ACRY: It was soooooo frustrating to see all those fish and not even be able to foul hook one of those bastages!!  :bash: I was about ready to go all grizzly bear on them and jump in and nab em with my claws. I saw a couple caught here & there, well people said they did but I didnt actually see them catch them, but supposedly all were taken on orange plugs. I dont know if I should go back to the salt or what, they are in the river dang thick, but as usual them little f'ers wont bite. I told myself last year I'd never fish for silvers in the river again.....   :pee:

I took a guy from work out saturday. He has never caught a salmon although he can now say he has hooked one.  :bash:  He didn't set the hook hard enough. I managed to put 2 in the box. Not all that good considering we were on the water for almost 11 hours. We hooked ours on 5 foot 6 pound leaders with the smallest pink or orange corky with a pair of anise scented red rubber eggs.

What was just as frustrating as not catching more fish was watching a three men throwing 10-12' leaders and finishing each cast with a full body hookset. They must have snaged 60 fish! They were smart enough not to keep them with all the people around. They were out most of the day and only left with 2 "legally" hooked fish.

Similar results for us Friday. Got one small one on a red plug right before I had to go to work. We need rain period. I'll be waiting to call in sick  :chuckle:

Rain possibly this Friday. (cough, cough) I am starting to feel sick  :chuckle: No seriously. I am hacking out my lungs right now  :P

HA HA 'call in sick' - thats funny. I thought I was the only one thinking that way! Same plan here I'll be calling in when that rain comes too - and now I wont feel so guilty about it!

Will the rain turn them on to biting? I thought it would just bring more in the river but there are plenty of them in there now, just no biters. In the deeper pools & slots it was UNREAL how many fish were marking on the sonar- un-freakin-real - I thought something was wrong with it until the water started to boil like a bunch or piranhas in a cheap horror flick.

Snoho coho are notorious for being lockjawed. After a first rain they will bite great but the window will be small. :twocents:

Yeah thats why I told myself I wasnt gonna chase them in the river anymore. Well then I aint missing the bite after the next rain. I sure hope it happens on the weekend so dont have to call in - but I will if I have to!

You can catch them well into November, and the later fish bite better.  Not as many around but there are fish to be caught.

I wonder how they are doing out there today? I stayed home from work since I'm catching some of the garbage thats going around and not feeling great - but I think I could solider up for a good bite! :chuckle: But it didnt seem like much rain here and I'm only 6-8 miles from the river at most so I didnt plan on going down there anyway. PLan on hitting it at 0dark:30 tomorrow morning.

:chuckle: *deep breath* *exhale* ohhmmm ohhmmm

So you you think even sat is too early and to wait? I guess it depends if we get anymore rain tonight huh? I've always figured it was good on the day after a good rain, not usually the same day, is that about right?

Its not totally dependent or the rain. It matters more what the river does. What you want to look for is a spike up it the river then when it starts dropping back down you need to be there. I very rarely have good days when the river is rising but when its dropping back its usually at the very least decent. Here is a link for you to watch the levels.

Couldn't have been stated any better. I keep my eyes on this website non-stop once the October rains begin. Once that river starts a falling, the fishing will be outstanding. The smoker and the barbecue are ready!!

That site is bookmarked on every internet connected device i own :-) Was thinking of getting out today but i think i might wait. Guy i know claims he's been whacking them all week. At least that's what he's telling people haven't called him out on it yet. Same guy claims he shoots limits of ducks every time he's out.

I was out first thing this morning, launched at 0530 and fished til 1315 and I didnt see any fish caught at all. Only saw one roller, maybe 2 as I heard a splash and saw something out of the corner of my eye, seriously, that was it. Saw a guide at the downtown snohomish launch about 0900 and he said they got 2 at first light. But I didnt see the fish and I was pretty close to them all morning. But I could have missed them pretty easily I guess. :dunno: Although I was marking quite a few fish here & there but it didnt seem like nearly as many as last sat. The water didnt really seem any higher or colored up at all either. I'm up the hill from the river by Maltby and it didnt rain much here on Friday but it was pouring pretty good this AM on the river. I'm not going tomorrow as I have to work at 1430 and also on monday so it looks like I'll miss the bite if they do actually start to bite finally. Story of my miserable fishing life!   :bash:  :ACRY:

Haven't started yet. I woke up and saw it peaked so I packed up and left. I done expect it to be all that great usually the river will need to stabilize a bit before it goes off. There aren't many people out here tho.

Steelhead? only time iv'e caught them in the snoho was plunking the crab and douglas bars back in the day when the old man had a key. i heard there are a lot in there doesn't seem like it's fished for them that much though.

You just bank fishing?

Sorry, I was on the "snoho system." I figured since the water came up we would be talking more about the sky now. I was up river on the sky and they ate everything I threw at them. The snohomish was GONE yesterday.
Title: Re: Any Word on CoHo in the SnoHo??
Post by: snocohunter on October 17, 2012, 12:17:39 AM
Minor technicality  :chuckle:

I still refer to them by their respective name. Sky is a great river. I just hate dealing with some of the a-holes who call it home. I saw the snoho was blown out so i didn't even bother today. Some of the locations on the usgs site have no data. Squiggly lines. Showing pretty high still but dropping in the snohomish. But i will give it a shot tomorrow.

The Sky went from around 13,000 CFSS to around 4,000.  If you can't catch a fish now you aren't going to this year (in the Sky).

Shoot - it always turns good when I cant go! Although I've been targeting silvers in the lower end of the snohomish, not steelhead or salmon up on the Sky. But I would head up there if I had the time for sure. Maybe it will be good this weekend... But I am heading to Elma tomorrow night to fish the Hump for kings all day friday!!  :rockin: Man I sure hope its good down there! I hope the rain either holds off tomorrow or is light so the river is good on friday, I've never fished it before so I am getting psyched!

The hump should be good to you. I drove over the snoho on my way up river for a quick trip. It still looks like chocolate milk. I would concentrate on the sky from here on out personally. Fished two hours tonight and went 1/2 on steelhead. These left over summer fish are crazy. They are hands down some of the highest jumping reel burning craziest steelhead I have ever hooked.

Jigs, eggs, prawns, corkies and yarn, coon shrimp, I think the only thing I haven't hooked them on is hardware, but I haven't tried that. :chuckle: good luck!

Thanks Button, I may head up there this weekend and see if I can a couple of them summers. I dont really have a good boat for that river so I usually just fish from the bank at the cracker bar (or Jim's Rock?) just at/below the mouth of the Sultan and do OK. I do have a little 12' fiberglass Gamefisher boat that I have taken in there but only once or twice. Dont like trying to run that with the kicker from my other boat and I'm not sure if my 30# electric trolling motor would be strong enough for the river - thats one of the main reasons I dont put the little boat in there.

Here is how I did on Friday. Bitter sweet, I limited on silvers pretty much first thing in the morning literally in about 15-20min (with help from my guide) and my buddies got skunked! One of them got a chum and then hooked a HUGE king, I'd say 30# plus, but then lost it 10ft from the boat after at least a TRUE 10min battle just to get him to the surface. No BS, it was 10min before we even saw color on him, so it sucked bad when he lost him after that fight.

Thanks stick!

Swanny, I got the 1st one (the small dark one) on a 1/4oz pink maribou style jig with white head and the other 2 were on a #5 Vibrax with a red body & silver blade. My buddy hooked the king on a blue jig with black head, the chum hit a silver & green #12 kwikfish - and in a hurry, barely let it out and it hit it - so it must have gone right in front of his face.

Damn nice looking fish. I've heard people are doing well on the sky and near the mouth of the sky on the snoho. Saw a nice 15 lb chromer posted by John @ John's sporting goods. I need to get out there. But I'll be busy until mid next week chasing kings down in Tillamook
