I shot my biggest bull to date on the opener last sat. It was a public land hike in hunt that was not going well all day but ended beautifully. I started in behind the gate at about 5:00am and made my way about 6 miles in by daylight on my bike. I hunted around till about 10 and then went to set up my ladder stand in a spot i had picked out a couple weeks ago.I then left for a couple hours to go check on a buddy that i was with and see if he had seen anything.I was back at my stand at 1:00 and planned to stay there til dark.around 4:30 I see guy come over the top of the hill and sit down to watch the same spot I am. Well I'm on public land oh well nothing I can do but just stay put and see who gets a shot off first I guess. Then about a 1/2 hour later this guy and his wife come walking right through the middle of the clear cut making all kinds of noise and talking really loud. So I think to my self there is still enough time left before dark hopefully things calm down and some elk come out before dark.
Then at about 6:00 the guy on top of the clearcut starts shooting at what appears to be nothing.he fired 3 rounds down into the clearcut but never acted like he was shooting at an animal and there was nothing in the area that i could see to shoot at.not to say I couldnt be wrong but it just didnt look to me that he was trying to kill anything but a tree. So after he fired the second round I decide I'm outta here and climbed out of my stand and headed for my bike.
I got back on my bike and was about 2 miles down the road when I come to a clearcut. As i start to scan the cut I spot elk.I drop my bike and get my gun in my hand and as I start to bring my binos up on the cow that is standing broadside to make sure its a cow and not a spike I see a massive bull lift his head.my binos never made it to my eyes.I dropped them and brought my gun up.as I put my sight on him he was walking straight up the hill and I knew this was gonna be a long shot.then the bull turned broadside and i put my sight right at the top of his back and let er rip.the bull dropped right there with out making a step.I reloaded and headed up the hill to go see him up close.
As I headed up I figured out I had it him in the back and he was trying to get up.so I put one in his heart and he was done.then I looked at the size of him and decided I better go get a few buddies to help out with this one.by the time it was all said and done we where dragging our butts back into campat around 2:00am. A quick and dirty measurement put him in the 315-320 class.
thanks to all my buds that where there to help me out with this one.I all most forgot i ranged the shot after he was down it was 203 yards off hand and yes I do love my vortek.
