What an awesome way to conclude our hunt out on the true Wetside of the state. It has been an exciting year of scouting, finding new spots, and getting out in the woods. Let me just start with the scouting trip back in early September.
My dad and I came across this old logging road that hasn't been used by trucks or by people in lord knows how long. It's one of those way overgrown, grassy grades with salmonberry all over it that the elk really love. Anyways, it paralleled the river we were wanting to hunt, which was awesome! The elk sign was everywhere. We found a wallow, sheds, droppings, tracks, and beds all within a quarter mile of the truck. Instantly we knew we'd be back in there for opening morning.
Well opening morning came and it was the worst weather you could imagine. Cold and clear at night but man it got up to 75 during the day. The elk weren't moving and while there was some fresh sign, nothing was super fresh. The next two days came and went and we hadn't seen anything. Not even a cow... Discouragement was starting to set in but I checked the weather on Monday night to find out that there was going to be some cloud cover at last the next morning. So the next morning my dad and my uncle started working down the road. My uncle came across super fresh sign and knew they were close. He rounded the bend in the road and BAM, bull down. The bull was only 20 yards away feeding up in the woods with a few cows and what appeared to be another legal bull. Of course the rest of the group bolted before my dad could catch up. Didn't really matter though. 1 bull took the whole day to pack out.
At long last the 3 of us have had success. It's such a relief. Hopefully the seal has been broken and we'll start getting bulls more often :chuckle:. Honestly though, what a difference scouting makes. To have a plan and know that there are legal bulls in the areas you're hunting, it really raises your odds significantly. The skunk is off now. Now if we can carry the luck into deer season, I'd really be stoked. :IBCOOL:
