Title: Need to get a duck call. Looking for suggestions!
Post by: whackemstackem on October 12, 2012, 08:17:13 AM
I woke up this morning with all of my hunting gear packed and headed west for the duck opener.   Now that I have made the long drive I started to unpack all my gear and realized I forgot my duck calls on the coffee table hundreds of miles away.  My question is, what is a good middle of the road duck call that can be bought at almost any chain store?  Looking for a double reed wood or polycarbonate.  Thanks everyone and yes I have already scolded myself quite a bit as I always have made sure they were on my neck first thing after waking up.

:yeah: Duck Commander any day. They are not very expensive, $15-$25.
You can sometimes find 'em at Wallmart.
Primos calls are pretty good cheap calls.
Wallmart definately has those.

I have a large variety of calls. If you are looking for something easy to blow with good results, bot the Duck commander brand calls, and the DR-85!! You will find which ones you like the best. Dont spend to much money on a call until you really know what you are doing. Every call will blow and sound different, to a certain degree. The above mentioned calls are some of the easiest, yet best sounding calls on the market.  :twocents:

Thanks, that helps me out in the selection side to narrow it down to the ones I'll begin to choose from.  I still got my "go to" calls at home but need one for this weekend.  Off to the store!

I really like Haydel's Carbon Kwacker. It looks really cool, and makes a great sound, but it is like $40-45. The red leg is the same call just no carbon, and I think it is $30.

If I needed a stand in for $20 I would get the Zink PH-2

:yeah:  Best cheap call in the world...it sounds better in my hands than any of my buddies with their fancy pants $175 "competition" winning calls.  LOL

I agree.
I have lots of call but always come back to my DR-85. It just sounds really good to ducks.

i've got a nasty habit of buying calls whenever i see them on sale.  best sounding cheapies i've found are the duck commander(i picked up a "cut down" version) and the DR-85 and RL-99.

i've also had a RNT quackhead j-frame, which is more or less a cheap $20 version of the RNT original.  it was a good sounding call when practicing with it, but always seemed to lock up when i'd take it hunting.
