Title: Teachermans 2012-2013 Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on October 14, 2012, 10:06:25 PM
Well season is underway in AK I got started back on the 25th of Sept. My partner and I have managed to put up over 30 beaver and 50 rats since the opener. We had a little set back a week ago when he had an accident with his .410 and actually shot himself in the hand and arm. Only 7 days later and already 3 surgeries later he's back in the field. This is going to be a great season!!! Our goal is over 100 canines and cats along with beaver, otter, mink and rats!!! Hope everyone enjoys pics of the frigid north!

working bubble trails under the ice.

I've got a really cool pic of it but its also very graphic so I didn't know if I should post it. Its one of the xray pics with the actual pic of the arm cleaned up so you can see down to the bone next to it.

Crazy part is they are leaving most of the LEAD pellets in his arm. They said it will cause more damage removing them than its worth. I was shocked. I expected him to be out for the season and the doctors have been telling him that as long as it doesn't hurt to use it as much as possible. He only has about 20% use/feeling in his left hand at this point plus its in a splint up against his body. Has another surgery in the morning, then within 10 days should actually be able to use his hand again.

Partner and I's goal is 300+ rats, 30+ mink, 15+ otter, 20+ marten, 50 beaver, and a 100+ fox, coyotes and lynx. Another wolf and wolverine this year would be a bonus!

Lots and lots of skinning  :chuckle:

Making a couple 15+ beaver bait piles this weekend up in 13 and plan on putting in about 10 dozen snares. Usually takes a week for the piles to get hot but once they do oh fun!

Great day on the line, just got home! We increased our line to about 50 beaver any coyote sets. That's about as many of those sets as I'm putting out. Now the long wait until Nov. 10th and everything else to open. Going to go put in 50 marten boxes next weekend and wire traps up so they are ready for opener. I think we'll put in a dozen new snare pens for lynx also. Very much ready for everything to open!

We only got a couple beaver today that took way to long to chop out from under the ice with my ax! I forgot chainsaw gas :( no yotes had touched our bait pile but several fox are hitting it. Can't wait to lower snares to their level.

On the way home tonight I spotted a nice red fox running the river so I was able to put one .22 mag bullet behind his shoulder at 100yds and piled him up. Hunting season is open for them.

Hopefully animals move little more this coming week, if anything else it will just be nice to get back out there again next weekend.

My local line will start up Nov. 10th and I'll have more K9 pics to post. I'll post pics of today tomorrow I'm done for the night ;)

Is there much competition in the area you are trapping. Do you have to label all your sets with ID. How far from civilization are you.

There is a ton of competition in my area! Everyone up here traps, I've got students in everyone of my classes that trap every weekend with there family. You have to be willing to hike or go a long distance in on a snow machine.

You do not have to label your traps in AK, another interesting fact there is no trap check time. Snares are a very key tool up here and the extreme cold temps keep your animals well preserved. It was already -8 on my line Sunday.

For now the Northern part of my line is a little over 200 miles from my doorstep. Very remote country in broken tundra with willows and spruce. Cats, fox, coyotes, wolves, marten and wolverine are our target once we stop beaver trapping.

Hope this helps paint a better picture, its beautiful country, the animal density would really surprise most people, its low! You have to put in a lot of miles and the average trapline has about a 5% success check rate off the rd. system. This means we should get around 4 animals a check

I tried Rasbo, I tried! Its all about the money. I had a great teaching job lined out but my wife couldn't get one and we couldn't take over a 50% cut in pay. Since we bought a house. We are hoping to live it up for 4 to 5 more years then get back into a Western state. AK is nice but way to spendy to get out and see family. We are coming down for Christmas break this year and its costing over $1,000 a ticket  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:  :'( because they know they can get it.  >:(

I've got some day of pics that are really good but very graphic.

I'll have to get a pic of the fox I shot yesterday from my partner, he got it on his phone. A few set pics from yestereday and a pic of the new #9 Brawn (9" jaw spread) I picked up for when I find that fresh wolf kill  ;)

The first pic the snare is really hard to see because I dip my blind trail set snares white. Look for the swivel in the brush and follow it out.

Figure we are getting around $60 a beaver up here and $5 a rat it adds up fast. Cats are around $250, fox last year averaged $90 (expecting that to be down this season to about $50), Marten $100, and wolves I sell taxidermy skinned for $600+, our weasels I also sell to taxidermsits for $20 plus shipping and they go all day long. I run about 50 weasel boxes, flying squirrels on the taxi market $30 ea and the XXXL wolverine I got last season I traded for a rifle that I since traded for a .500 S&W with a box of ammo plus a Leupold 20-60x80 Spotting scope, case and tripod  :chuckle: With that said gas in Wasilla is $4.19 a gallon and I take a 6 gallon jug with me. I drive a Jeep Rubicon and it gets about 19 mpg but only has a 15 gallon tank.

With all this said I put aside a couple $K at the beginning of the season so I have gas money  :chuckle:

I use to trap when I was a kid.... Found out it was all illegal.... I made snares and such just for something to do as a kid along with a bunch of hand made gripping traps that my Gramps gave me before he died!!! None of it was legal!!!!

Went out and checked my first snares of the season in the Valley and it was good and bad. I ended up getting a nice red that hadn't been in my set an hour and had another set that someone had crossed my line and decided to help themself to another fox. I could have followed there tracks but I just left them a note letting them know I've got cameras in the area and I would be letting fish and game know  ;) I don't care to get into a fight over an animal. (I've got a baggy full of notes,  :chuckle: )

First pic is coming down the trail to my first set, second and third pics are of what was in my first snare, fourth pic is on the remake of the set, fifth pic is the set that I lost a critter in with track leaving it, and the final pic is of a new set I made on top the ridge about 1/4 mile from the place I lost the last animal. Notice all the tracks running down the ridge (its a dirt hole set). I also put another snare down the ridge about 200 yds past the dirt hole.

Great thread teacherman. I look forward to more pics and info. I am going to get my trappers license this year for the first time....trying to learn what I can online about it. My grandpa used to trap in the dakotas in his youth to supplement income and I thought it would be a great way to get out a bit more in the winter. Be safe up there!

Not really a book but hear is something http://www.montanatrappers.org/ (http://www.montanatrappers.org/)
Might be able to find a mentor.

Here's one for Minnesota Trapline Products. They have books and videos.  http://www.minntrapprod.com/ (http://www.minntrapprod.com/)

Every trap supply house will have books and videos.

Doing a check tomorrow!

Great ice fishing lake for lakers! We have half dozen marten sets up that power line. Most of our stuff is 60 miles further Northeast.

Lesson for the day, when its -10 out sticks explode when you break them. I broke a small spruce about 1 1/4" diameter and when it snapped it sent shrapnel in all directions. One of those pieces actually hit the lens of my glasses and blew out a lens. could have been bad if I had my contacts in. One more thing you need to remember in the fidget north.

That's a hard call! Rat traps work really good on weasel!!! But a descent size mink will get away. In areas there are both I use #1 jumps and make it as hair trigger!

Teacherman, Have you ever taken a rat trap apart wound it one more time then used it? I'm Sure Loki is asking because all we can use is rat traps. In my High school Physics class we built Mouse trap powered cars. One of the tricks we used to beef them up was wind the spring 1-2 more times. You would have to refasten them to to board, and the extra torque requires a beefier faster than the staples used.  :twocents:
Title: Re: Teachermans 2012-2013 Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on November 24, 2012, 06:30:12 PM
I think that would work if you did that! I put a quarter under the torque bar on them and that helps beef them up. I've got female mink in them before. Just make sure you wire them down.

I never did like cam locks. I would think you would have problems with freeze ups with them. Maybe not in the weather it looks like you are getting in recent pictures.
Personally I liked small L locks I made myself.

Very strange year up here. Should have a foot of snow at least if not 2 or 3 on the flats. With that said its been in the singles and negatives everyday. Very cold!

Oh ya! Apring is the worst. I've also had rats eat each other thst time of year. What's really bad up here is when you come up to a set and you've had a wolf eat a fox or lynx!

Stupid question... But...   :chuckle:

So what are those things you are calling rat's??? They look more like a beaver cross to me.... Never seen one before and we trapped a little when I was younger... Use to get a lot of mink by or even in water but never one of those...    :dunno:

"You cook good rabbit, pilgrim."  (it's all burnt and dried out with no salt or pepper....LOL)

I will have to add my trapping pics to this catagory this winter season.  Been looking for sign but nothing yet.  They will come and meet the ultimate modified Victor Rat Trap.   Got one named Maggie (from 1st blood) that is stained red.

Well God works in all kinds of ways guys. Not sure what my line or Journals going to do or be like for a while. My wife told me she's done. I spend most of my time in life with her and my two perfect little girls. I'm going out this afternoon to check some line, make a few more sets and just think. Seems like when everything in life's good you fall flat on your face. I'm not giving up but at the same time I'm tired and just don't know how much more I can take. Appreciate all the great comments, this lines a good out and way to clear my mind for now.

Start by saying thank you for all the prayers, much needed. Don't need to go into much detail but I'm not giving up. I do appreciate a ton of people on this site, been like a family for several years. I'm going to give it one more really hard push. Did a ton of reading last night and have some good ideas. Really don't want a negative vibe around the house right now with the holidays. This should be a fun time of year for my girls, don't want it to be imotionally impacting on them to where they dreed Christmas.

I've got couple sets I'm going to check today on my way to pick my girls up from their grandpas that have a good chance of being good ;) A person still has to live and have outs.

Thanks again

awesome! havent gotten a fox in years! they are some awesome little cirtters! keep up the good work! how are the prices on fox furs?

I sell 90% on the taxi market:

$65-85 for reds
$165 for cross
$250 for silvers

these are taxidermy prices, not tanned just taxi skinned. Buyer also pays overnight shipping. If I sell to Nafa much less. I've been able to sell all my stuff within 24hrs. so far this season. The fox in AK are much larger than any I've seen in the lower 48 plus have very thick beautiful fur

Really freakin cold on my line today. Got about half my line uncovered, it was a balmy -39 below on the upper part on my line. Nice and warm in the valley at -12. Ended up with a nice surprise as I got started this afternoon. Got my second silver of the season. Got a few more sets in. Trail sets become the way to go once we get deep snow.

My day actually ended early when I fell through the ice in a creek up to my hips, overflow. Quickly got out and rolled in the sugar dry snow to wick the moisture off me. Quickly made it back to my jeep, only took about 45 minutes 😕 Lesson of the day super cold snow sucks water away from anything and it doesn't matter how cold it is overflow can happen.

Just to say that tm is getting a foxpro call and a decoy this yr with a nice 3 mil candlepower light and a 1 mil candle pwr whitel light.  Don't own a 223 yet but will have a 17 hmr and a 243 with us.  Any suggestions on a load for the 243.  Not reloading this year but something over the counter that will not tear up a yote too bad.  He knows about that portion of his christmas by the way.  :IBCOOL:
Title: Re: Teachermans 2012-2013 Trapping Journal
Post by: TeacherMan on December 17, 2012, 06:42:28 AM
You kill me stump, lol. Best fur load in a .243 is a solid 80 gr loaded down to under 2600 fps. I'm not saying this is the best long range load but I've got several buddies in AK that do this and it doesn't blow out rib cages. Overall it's still a little bit hefty for fur.

To answer the other question yes to predator calling. It's just an issue of getting to the area I like to call about 3 hours out but has tons of wolves and lynx. Have a couple days planned the end of January going back in on machines and staying in a remote cabin.

330 cut into a 5 gal bucket with a 1/4 of a wired beaver in the back and an overdose of Gusto. Cut the tracks just yesterday. Followed then 1/4 mi on snow machines then he cut in. We set that area with 6 sets for him. When we reset I'll take pics of the sets.

Got this pic of him at dark up in our line. We are in on our snow machines. When he thaws I'll get a clearer pic.

Only couple wolverine yr if I'm lucky! Lynx half dozen. Mostly fox and yotes. Our goal this year was over 100 fox.

Waiting for my flight to Seattle, its 30+ min late which sucks since my connecting flight was 40 min later. My dads in route from Spokane otherwise would have been stuck in Seattle until 7am tomorrow or later.

My trapline in AK will get set back up second weekend of January. I'm buying small game license in Wa, if I shoot something I'll post it here 😉

Trapping partner text me this pic today of another lynx off the line. Hes checking most of my line for me when I'm gone. I disabled part of it. Once again this was caught in a snare pen.

longrangekillr ya got a great idea for teacherman, he could charge a few bucks for people to come up and run his trapline with him and help learn how to put up fur, thaty would be fun...do you stay out overnight teacherman when your runnin your line? would you ever go for charging money to have people book a trappin week or somethn along those lines, i heard of a guy that did this i think up in canada and at the end of your time there you got to keep a pelt or 2, it was good extra money for the trapper and a great expireince for the client

My partner and I take friends out all the time. The last wolverine we got we just happend to have a really old timer with us about 80 and I can tell you it made his day! Brought back good memories. We only stay the night when we trap way north. We have a friend with a cabin so it works out good.

Side note, I've been out of my classroom for two weeks and just got back today. Kids bring me trapping bait all the time I trade for home made snares, etc.. Anyway I left 1/4 of a moose hide in a black bag in my heated stockroom over break, forgot about it  :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: Wow! I'll get it out tomorrow! It will make a good addition to a bait pile. We got a surprise firemarshal check yesterday and I guess they didn't spend as much time as they usually do in my back room  :chuckle:

Everything in AK is worth more, lol. They are much larger on the average with lighter colored thick hair. On the fur market or buyers reports you see them called "brush wolves". I. Get about $60 a yote about double to triple WA pups price. With that said I HATE getting them because they are so nasty to flesh.

Mange is a problem in some areas but I've yet to deal with it on yotes. Had a nasty wolf with it last year. I always trash bag and Raid my fur for a few hours before I skin.

Never really noticed them as a problem up here. Think it's to cold, no ticks either.

Been a quiet week should of had a triple tonight but the stats didn't line up. Reset the area and added a bunch new snares. Next check in there should be really good. A buddy of mine just got a hot spot permit on a moose and pulled a big cow so I've got the makings of a crazy good new bait pile. Should be a good weekend.

All my Unit 14 lines been pulled now. Moving up into 13 for a few more weeks of K9s and then 100% muskrats until June!!!

One of the fox I got when pulling, I really liked this set it was going across a frozen swamp with one little tree about 3/4" long. Had a trail passing but it and I attached a 1/16" camloc snare to it over the trail. Good quick wrap up ;)

Shifting gears! With all my fox sets in the valley pulled I'm ready to start hitting the rats! Looks like we are going to see good prices this year! Hearing $8-11 rats? I'd be very happy with that, lol. Anyway my dads up visiting and while I'm at work I've had him working hard on making traps. I use a ton of 110s and #1 & 1.5s but I love colony traps in good runs! Over the next week or so we should be starting to get them set. Our goals 60 colonies out with a hundred or so other traps ;)

Interesting...... Do you not use dive sticks?

I've found from just watching rats they will ver out of the channels with a dive stick. It's like a chin lifter on a snare. Works great for bush trapping but in rural areas fox avoid them like the plague. Rats spend most of there time swimming the bottom of there runs. That's why you can see the warm trails. Trial and error got me here. 200 plus rats last year doing it.

I will experiment next year with that. It would save time not putting them in.

It's nice focussing on rats! I think I'm going to go put couple beaver sets in today also. Found another pic of a BEAUTIFUL cherry red fox I got a few weeks back. Not sure why I never posted it. All k9 is done for the yr for me between my partner and I we only got about 1/2 what we wanted. We are thinking somewhere around 50 fox, lol 13 yotes, 1 wolverine and 3 cats. In the water department we are around 50 beaver, 9 otter and not sure how many rats. My buddies the water trapper. I play under the ice a little but he loves it!!! Well I guess I've got more traps to go set ;)

Castor mound, #3 LS on a 1/8" cable with slide loc leading into 6' of water and a 50 lb sack of rocks ;)

They are on a main river bank in a high beaver traffic area.

There are ways to use these traps in WA. That's why I am asking. I set a lot of those down here as well. Can't beat a good old burlap sack full of rocks.
