O.k I have to start my own little Blacktail Blog ..So far its been tough but it is for sure picking up at this time ..So far we have seen around 15 doe and 1 bear as of yesterday ...Then today rolls around I decided we need to hit the timber to check up on a few things and just as I predicted happened ..We head out around 2:30 pm and hit the timber So once we got to where I wanted to be we instantly seen new rubs - Big rubs :yike: So now I have shivers up my back knowing things good happen for my son Ted tonight and by god they just about did .....just about :bash: :bash: As we approach the area I killed my buck in last year I could see the grade was grown up so I figured before the rut really heats up I best cut down some Briers so we can approach the area quietly ..as I am doing So I tell Ted to keep your eyes open and keep watching that ridge because that's the way they always come from ..after a few minutes Ted is saying DAD DAD right there is a deer I look up as it is going threw the briers :bash: to see an area of briers shaking as his horns were caught in the middle of them and ted says to me ,, Dad its a monster as it disappeared into the alder thicket ...Yes it was that big SOB that just keeps slipping threw my fingers ...I have seen this buck at least 4 times in the last few years but it is hard to slip up on him and get a shot ...I have hunted this deer late archery mostly but I think if we are going to kill him it has to be now or the last week of the season once he gets stupid ..anyway after all of that we head up the hill about a mile and see a few more deer and a trail cam :yike: :bash: :bash: :bash: ALL the years I have hunted this area and killed my share of deer someone puts up a dang trailcam in MY HONEY HOLE ! That's fine because he is off course by a long shot :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: So here are the new rubs we found and one of these trees is his favorite tree because he has been hitting the same tree for about 4 yrs now ...but I can find rubs like this in about a 1 1/2 square mile ...its rocky and steep country so he is one hell of a smart blackie ...But his day is coming soon :chuckle: :chuckle: I hope real soon :dunno:
-
Came across a HUGE rub the other day. Definately an aggression rub.
-
If you look close you can see last years rubs on the trees around the new ones !
-
I am so fired up now I think Ted is going to be missing some school :dunno: :yeah: :chuckle:
-
Good luck to you guys I hope you get him. I found a few fresh rubs today myself but it will be late archery before I can hunt again, a bit to late but I might get lucky.
-
I will be hunting late archery too ... but that last week of October always seems to be magical
-
good luck catching up to him! seen 20 does sunday :o. only bucks i have seen are in peoples yards. :bash:
-
Sneaky bastages! Have fun trying to out wit him and hope you get him, but as I'm sure you know most monarch blacktails are just meant to live. My only advice is don't play his game but have him play yours. Like the old man says "be the spider" ;)
-
Looks awesome! I'm starting to get pumped up for these blackies! I'm heading in to my new found honey hole tomorrow morning to find one of these studs!

I lived adjacent to 3,000 acres of timber land around McKenna, WA (by Yelm) for 14 years. I sat in tree stands for seven years, shed hunted for five, rattled in bucks for pictures when I wasn't hunting them and only ever saw on blacktail that was bigger than this. Here you've got two in the same frame. I'd say it's a honey hole.
-
Great photo Shane ...hope you catch up with them ...@ jONATHAN yEAH Blacktails like this are hard to come by ...sitting in areas where you can see along ways helps and just hanging out and doing lots of glassing . As the rut gets closer they get dumber and thats when most of them get shot ...and I am dieing waiting for it to come ...which is not far off at all if the weather sticks around
-
Good time of year for blacktail I went out today and put the camera back up I sure see alot of bucks in october. Although not to many in daylight. I was driving home the other night and almost hit a real nice buck, lucky I was looking for deer our I would've hit him. I had a hard time getting him of the road he was acting pretty dumb.he was a 3x4 with eye guards and his main beam turned into a droptine very cool looking buck I was happy just to see him. Good luck guys I look forward to seeing some pic.
-
Went out to my spot this morning. Some b*stard stole my frick'n trail camera! :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
I'm hunting timber land so I know there can be other hunters there, I've even gotten a couple on my cam. I just don't understand why someone would feel the need to steal a trail cam. I had it up on a dead snag bolted on with a bike lock. They pushed over the snag and pulled the whole camera off. :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
Hopefully I'll be hunting in there later this season and those guys will come in so I can give them a piece of my mind.
No deer this morning by the way...
-
that sucks! :mor: :bash: :bash:
-
They are definitely starting to think about the ladies now, had a buck in my yard last night (after i got home from hunting) and he was grunting, only way I even knew he was there, under an apple tree just 30 yards from the porch.
I might go out tonight in search of some mushrooms and fresh rubs if I can get off work early enough.
-
O.k I have to start my own little Blacktail Blog ..

No deer this morning by the way...
I finally saw one the other day ...we waved and moved on ...but one thing I know I would do different is put them off the beaten path ...If there is a beaten trail or grade most likely someone is going to walk up it sooner or later ...I would put mine in the brush where the game is coming from ... :twocents: I think trailcams are cool and I think next year I will have to get me a couple
-
After hunting hard the last few days Ted finally connects on this fat 3x2 Blacktail ..We wake up this morning to rain and wind and I knew I had to let him miss school today :dunno: :chuckle: So we have breakfast and took our time waiting for it to get daylight ..I learned years ago that there is no sense in leaving the house in the dark until I can see good and so happy we did ...We have hunted the same units for days now and seeing a few doe but no bucks So I decided we would hike up in a unit we knew would have deer in it this morning .We get out of the truck and start walking up the grade that goes threw the unit and as we come to the first corner Ted looks up to his right and says ...right there - right there...I look up to see this buck looking at us ...Ted lays his 25-06 across a cedar stump and BOOOM .. He drops right in his tracks ...Dead center in the white patch of his neck  All the sudden up jumps another deer :bash: You guessed it :yike: another buck and yes it was another 3 pt ..But I think his buck was bigger bodied So we are happy how it all went down ...His buck has a 2in layer of fat on it and Blacktail rarely have this much fat on them So we may be in for a heck of a winter :dunno: :yeah: Now My other son & I are ready for late archery to begin and I think it is going to be a good one this year and Yes we will be hounding that old start sucker that keeps slipping threw my fingers but this time he will need to out smart 2 of us not just one ;) Ted is alittle disapointed he can not hunt for the big boy now but he provided a freezer full of meat that we need because our freezer is empty :bdid:
-
Wednesday I accidentally left one of my scent hangers on a branch while picking up in the dark. Yesterday I went back for an evening stand and the branch it was on was shredded and the hanger was on the ground below it. They are getting interested.
-
Congrats to your son! Looking forward to my morning hunt! Hopefully I don't get too wet.
-
Great buck! I almost called in sick.... :bash: :bash: Guess I should have. Good for your boy
-
Nice looking deer.
-
-
Ted lays his 25-06 across a cedar stump and BOOOM .. He drops right in his tracks
Well duh! That's what the .25-06 does :IBCOOL:
A seriously under-utilized caliber in my opinion, I think it's one of the best all purpose calibers. Deer, elk, black bear. A good Washington gun.
Congrats to your boy and good luck with late archery.
-
Really enjoy reading your posts!! Congrats to ted on getting a nice buck  hopefully we all get to see a picture of the big one youve been talking of!
-
Things are for sure picking up as far as Blacktail hunting goes and next week should be just perfect ...Seems the deer are moving good around mid day and if you do not see many early in the morning I would change your tactics a little .. You definately want to be hunting between 11am and 2pm ..Not saying stay home in the morning or late evening because you never know when you will see deer but from experience and being a hardcore blacktail hunter I would spend more time searching mid day ...Cover alot of ground and try getting above the clearcut that have fire weed in them and glass till your eyes bug out ..I always concentrate on finding old cedar stumps and cedar saw dust piles where the deer will be laying . glassing every one I can see looking for that grey face stirring at me ..Thats why I love Blacktail hunting it takes a good eye and lots of patients
Here is my buddies buck - shot at 1:30 pm ----Mid day and it will only get better  NICE LITTLE 4X4
-
My report as of 10.20 is the does haven't kicked their fawns so they aren't in heat yet. Maybe the bucks are rutting but they aren't chasing the does. I saw 4 doe/fawn combos the last 2 days no solo does. The bucks I saw were still bach'd up.
-
Bowhunter45,
You have got me pumped up man :chuckle: Those are some nasty looking rubs, definately a mental bad ass buck
Last week of october is awesome. Thats why I take it off every year. Good luck, and hope to see pics of him halloween nite. :yike:
-
An across island neighbor had four bucks round robin sparring in her yard yesterday.
-
Went out again this evening, two mornings in one stand and one afternoon in another and no sign of anything yet. Trails still aren't that tracked up and haven't seen any fresh rubs yet. Wish I could hunt more than just on the weekends. Know their around, heading out again tomorrow morning plan on hunting til around 4.
-
Go when you can and stick with it ...we are seeing lots of deer but we are working our butts off for it ..lot of area to hunt but all gated :bash: So either you walk or hide a bike ...My buddy road his bike over 14 miles the other day :yike: and ended up killin his buck about 7 miles in ...we called the warden and he let us go retrieve it ...THAT WAS SURPRISING :chuckle: I am starting to like these guys :dunno: 8)
-
So far all the sign I'm seeing is nocturnal in my areas... I've only hunted this Friday and Saturday for BT.... Saw two does Sat about 9 am skirting a huge cut.... Tracks all over the cuts and landings... Only a matter of hours old.... Tried to still hunt through some reprob I use to hunt for a few years... About 12'ers now... The still hunting was great.... Noise factor was great for anything within a mile... :chuckle: Could've had 3 brush pickers though!!!!
-
:yike: :yike: my buddy calls me lastnight and he wanted to go hunting So I said O.K I will go too ...Well it was a short hunt to say the least ...we head up in the same unit my son killed his buck and as we get to the landing I have to take a leak ...So he walks over to the landing and all I can hear is him mumbling something ...So I start to him and he says there he is JB ..THERE HE IS ...I peak over the landing and standing not more than 20 yrds from where my son killed his deer and there he stands ...We are both excited and as I got the word out TAKE YOOOUR TIIME Booooom he hits the dirt ...We are jumping around like to kids that just got a new car but we knew he was big but not as big as this ...The prettiest Blacktail I have ever layed eyes on as far as the colors in this deer !!! Now I ask him if I can share but he has not called me back yet ...and another thing that was weird about this whole deal I cut 3 different fingers ...One while helping him gut it and 2 others while skinning the dang thing ...I have never cut myself eveeeeer while gutting or skinning any animal ...Was it excitement ?? :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :yike:
-
Cant wait to see it!!!!!!!

Fixed it for ya...
-
Huge blacktail! what a big bodied deer! Great set of horns on him as well
-
With a body like that, was there a thick layer of fat on him when you skinned him out? He doesn't look to rutted up. Did he smell like a rutting buck?
-
Oh ya thats a stud!!! Now im super stoked to find one some day!!!
-
:yike: Yes siree! That's a stud right there! Good job and congrats to all of you. Your sons buck is nice also.
-
With a body like that, was there a thick layer of fat on him when you skinned him out? He doesn't look to rutted up. Did he smell like a rutting buck?
He had layers of fat and all the deer I have seen shot so far were the same way ...He was definately getting ready for the rut ...and he was not stinky yet but his scent glads on the hind legs were very dark ...They should be rutting hard any day now So get out there and find one ....As we all know the last week in October is the best time to find these big mature Blacktail
-
Wait a minute. With a deer like that, there should be a bunch of people claiming it's a benchleg because they've never seen a blacktail that big. :chuckle:
-
HOG, thats for sure. congrats on harvesting a fine specimen. Lots of meat and lots of bones.
-
That is one very nice blacktail buck ,truly a day you will never forget congratlutions.
-

Hey ....HAD !! I HATE TRESPASSERS :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: I can wait to see what we find this year ...My wife is hunting this year and if I would have listened to her last year , That would have been her deer :bash: :bash: But my best friend got him and that's O.K My wife has a new rifle this year and I can not wait to see her blast one
-
I HAVE A TRAIL CAM PIC OF THAT DEER!!!!!!!
you may want to email me that picture ...I get a 8x10 made for my buddy and I :hello: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Definitely a nice blacktail. There are some nice ones out there and some hanging on members walls to remain non posted.
-
Upon further review... I lied. Might be his little brother with no eye guards. No Trespassing for this guy, pic is from my yard. That is one heck of a blacktail.
-
BOWHUNTER45. Your opinion, better looking deer. Sitka BT's or Columbian BT's. Both of these are from back home (Kodiak Island).
-
Second.
-
:yike: those are a couple of giant sitka's :yike:
-
Great job
-
From my last Trip home.
-
Grandpas Last Deer. RIP Pat.
-
Gramas Last Deer. RIP Grams. We miss you.
-
A few more from past trips. I need more taxi money :chuckle:
-
...
-
IMHO I think the Sitka's are prettier
-
Sitka, if JB's deer had 2 inches of fat on it, I'm assuming your Sitka blacktail must have had at least 4 inches? :chuckle:
-
JB's friends deer was a pig for sure  It almost looked like it had its summer coat on, awesome cape on that one.
-
Hey ...some nice deer Kodiak  I could flip this whole thread upside down if you want to see a few Blacktail over 200 lbs :chuckle: But I would loose all my true friends :bdid: :hello:
-
Lets see em. You can never have too much deer porn. :IBCOOL:
