Title: Favorite boots
Post by: kglacken on October 17, 2012, 09:01:10 PM
Alright this is simple. Im in the market for some new hunting boots after realizing my books are no longer holding up in the rain. They have lots of miles and wear on them so its time. My only criteria is that they have to be waterproof, and preferably 800 gram thinsulate. So lets hear what you guys think. Whats your favorite?

For a long time i hunted with th $100 class boot but i bought new boots every year because they didnt hold up. One year i bought 2 pair and both were useless by the end of bear season. So i went with lowa and got the renegades and tibets. The renegades lasted barely a season but the tibets are still going strong. The tibets are a little heavier and stiffer then i would like during the early season but they are comfortable. They also take sometime to break in. :twocents:

If you want truly waterproof boots, get rubber boots. Mine are Lacrosse, but they're 15 years old, so I can't really recommend a certain boot. I'd definitely consider Lacrosse, or the Muck boots, and Cabelas also has their own brand which are probably decent.

:yeah:

I recommend traditional hunting boots if you put a lot of miles on during your hunts but if you dont travel very far then rubber boots are the ticket. I wear them on the west side for black tail hunting and my other boots on the east side for longer hunts

Wow!! 800 grams of thinsulate... Are you hunting for polar bears? Anything over 200 grams while I'm hiking make my feet sweat too much, then when I stop to glass or take a break they freeze up like ice cubes.  Anyway, I like the Rocky Bearclaws.

My Danner Acadias have held out water whilst walking through streams. They're a bit heavier and aren't the most comfortable boot, but they're very stable, durable, and you can carry out a heavy load with confidence.

I blow through boots like crazey . Vasque are the best boots I've found for a big guy . they are heavy but very comfeee ! I bought a pair of under armor speed freaks and love them for the warmer weather . Danner makes a good boot aswell , I'm not to impressed with my kenntrek pack boots and they are built over seas , I didn't relize that till I baught them .

I found Bigfoot!!  I love my custom made Nick's boots for early archery on stand or hiking with my son during modern. I am looking for a good late season boot as well. But I agree 800 grm for hiking seems a bit much. My feet would be soaked from sweat.

Side Note: Adding a pair of gaiters will help keep your feet dry too with leather boots- won't be as likely for your pants and socks to wick into your boots.

I put a lot of miles on my boots in the water. Hunt the rainforest early and head east for late. I have been using Zomberlans for the past 3 years and they have been awesome! they aren't cheap (around $300) but if I can 3-4 seasons out of a pair of boots that says something. Also the guys that recommend good socks couldn't be more right. Spend some money on socks, your feet will love you.I also wear gators if there is snow present.

I have the Cabelas Outfitter 9" Pro Series 400 grams thinsulate boots and I am really enjoying them. I have had them for a couple years and put at least 28 miles on them this opening weekend and have no complaints. I have used them in the desert, the mountains, snow, rain, and whatever else you could throw at them. Before that I had a pair of Georgia's that I walked the soles off of. Probably could have them resoled, but couldn't wait that long and ended up getting the Outfitters. They are on sale right now and cheaper than when I bought mine.

obviously i like kentreks products..had the mt extremes in just about everything and i still like em,i use a gel heel cup as well

Rubber boots have come a long way since I was a kid. You really need to try them to believe it. Still I wouldn't recommend them for days that you plan on hiking long distances. I normally wear them at times when I won't be going more than a couple of miles. They're perfect for hunting blacktails in the timber. No worries when you ha be to cross a creek or swampy ground.

I wear my Schnee's pac boots when I'm not walking a lot or when I'm doing a lot of sitting.  They are really warm, and heavy.

When I'm doing more walking and not a lot of sitting at a time, I've got Cabela's rubber boots (similar to what Bobcat linked) with 400 gram Thinsulate that work great.

Both of those boots are really good for hunting in Western WA.  I really like both of them.

I have used Lowas, Meindl, and Kenetrek boots over the last 5 years.  They have all been great boots but the Lowa and Kenetreks have been awesome and the Kenetrek boots fit better so they win out.

Before making the switch to the higher end boots I rotated between danner, rocky and Irish setter.  No one will ever be able to convince me that these boots are worth their price tag after making the switch.  Besides, even know the initial cost of the boots I recommend is higher they are a better bargain as the "$ per years worn" seems to be much greater.

Just my  :twocents:

I had resisted for quite a while but bought some Kenetreks last year and they are definately the best I've ever had. They've been through some seriously wet, snowy, muddy, nasty weather and have held up great. I always used danners before but I just wear them out too fast and I can barely get a season out of the waterproofing. Anyways Kenetreks have served me well.

I figured I would add something as well to this old thread.  I have a pair of Meindl Perfekt boots.  This is my third hunting season and they have been amazing boots up unti this year.  As said before by huntnnw and Bullblaster the foot beds started to get really hard and would start to fatigue my feet after a full day.  A couple weeks ago while out at Cabela's I picked up a set of the Meindl Air-Active footbeds (which are what are in the Meindl Ultralights I also own and also love) and a set of Sof-Sole Athletes Plus insoles.  I removed the original "Perfekt" footbeds and have tested these two insoles over the past couple weekends during late muzzy season.  I have put at least 10 miles on each set of insoles and both did way better that the 3-year old Perfekt footbeds.  But I have to say the Sof-Sole insoles are great so far.  I will have to see how they hold up, but my Perfekts are back to being perfect.   :twocents:

I've used the Meindle Canada Hunter since 92, and it's been a great boot, actually became a better boot with the double stitching, as I had issues with my first 2 pairs that were single stitched (Cabela's replaced them).  This year I bought Kenetrek Mt Extreme's, 400 gr thinsulate, and they are nice as well.  I've finally broken them in and they are quite similar to the Canada Hunter.  I expect good things with them.

For 25+ years I goofed around buying what I refer to as the disposable boots, Rocky's, Danners, etc.  Went thru a ton of what was touted as the next best hunting boot, blah, blah, blah.....
I have no idea why I waited so long to point all that boot money I spent over the years to the Kennetrak people.
4 years later,  my Mountain Extremes will only be replaced with another pair, if I have to.

I do still have my last pair of disposable Pronghorns.  They leak like sieve but I don't care.  They are relegated to the barn and usually covered with horse crap, a fitting existing for them.   :chuckle:

Best boots I've ever worn, hands down!  Cabela's Perfekt Huntes by Meindl.  These boots have more ankle support than any boots I've ever worn and do great when side-hilling especially with meat on your back.  Aside from that, they are extremely comfortable for long hikes.  Best part, they feel like the days I bought them which was over 2 years ago and I've put a TON of miles no them.

I got a pair of the Danner Military issue USMC boots and was very disappointed in them. The ankle support broke down within a couple of years of hunting-only use. They surely make better boots than these, but I wasn't at all impressed.

Im glad someone has had good luck with the Cabela's Perfekts. Myself found out the Perfekts aren't so perfect. I returned 4 pairs of them all separating at the sole in less than 3 month of heavy use. I do still have a pair of the Mendle Denali's and they are by far the best boot for ankle support and have held up for 2 years now.

I have used many different brands and styles over the years.  It comes down to what the "jarhead" said- personal preference.  And I might add - individual expectations.  My Chinese Danners were the pits for the first couple of years.  Very stiff and clunky to get around in.  The last couple of years of their lifespan they were some of the most comfortable boots I'd ever worn.  They had lost all semblance of being waterproof though.

I have a pair of Cabela's right now that only get worn to work and for anything else that will help end their life so I can get a new pair of boots.  They are even more ill fitting and clunky than the Danner's were.  I had to wear my cheap department store light hikers for this most recent general buck season.  I just laced the light hikers up snug and went for it.  Some of the best foot days I have had hunting in a while.

I had a pair of Georgia low heeled loggers( no Gore-Tex ) for a number of years.  Comfy from birth to death.  No Gore-Tex.  I have a high tolerance for cold and wet feet as I move/walk a lot when hunting.  Would recommend the Georgias if you are on a budget.  Most Coastal/Big R stores carry them.  I see they have a Gore-Tex version now too.  Mine were minimal break in.

The best boot I ever had was 25 years ago.  It was a Danner boot made for Cabela's.  It was one of the first "Bob" soles.  They were a pair that had been returned because the owner said they leaked.  They were made from a softer leather and had 400 grams of insulation if I remember correctly.  Those boots didn't leak, and lasted me about 7 years, give or take.  The only moisture inside was from sweat.

So here again it comes down to each person, as the Marine says.  I prefer not to use insulation, and I hate the padded collars.  All those two things do is hold in heat so my feet sweat.  I like all leather- harder to poke a stick through.  I prefer a solid Goodyear lugged sole - again, harder to poke a stick through.  I like lace to toe in a size that I can get two pairs of socks into during colder days.

If the snow is over 4 inches I recommend gaiters to help prevent wicking.  I had never used them before last year.  I had to do a lot of snowshoeing during a storm outage we had this past January.  I had just bought a pair of the cheap military gaiters from one of the catalog retailers on a whim.  I wore my cheap Cabela's boots with those Gaiters, with or without the snowshoes for 16 hours a day, and had comfy feet the entire time.

You need to try out whatever you are going to wear hunting, in as many situations as you can, before taking them on that "big dream hunt".  Don't accept that the priciest boots that show up the week before the hunt are going to feel good at the end of the first or second day.  And don't accept that the cheap light hikers won't work for some occasions.
