Title: Flat Coated retrievers
Post by: BK Dave on October 24, 2012, 07:35:26 AM
So I've been dogless for over 2 years now, and have Finally pulled the trigger on a new addition to our family.
The pup we are waiting for is an uncommon breed. The "Flat Coat Retriever"
Does anybody have first hand experience with one?

Can you pick out the "odd dog" in the group?

Spent a few days training with Judy Tesky. She has very nice flat coats and many in our area come from her lines. She's in BC. Her dogs are nice and do good work at a high level. Flat coats are pretty soft dogs from what I've seen. They don't take nor, need much pressure.

I've seen her name, and cool pic!  I had Chesapeake but he was one of my 2 dogs that got stolen 2 yrs ago.
Thanks for the insight, we're really looking forward to our pup!  He's only 2 weeks old now.

To me they seem real similar to golden retrievers, with the only difference being the black color.

Never had one but I'd guess they should be a great dog.

My wife had a dog she got from the pound when we met.  It looked like a flatcoat.  Nice dog, hated any kind of rodent and possums.  We thought about these this last time around but decided we like the goldens better because of the color.

Well Bobcat, funny you mention the Golden.  My Gf really wanted a Golden Retriever and I wanted a Black Lab!  This is a great compromise (-:

I had a flatcoat 25+ years ago,she was a nice pet and a great frisbee dog but the hunt just wasn't there, smart as a whip but not much hunting desire. If a guy wanted to hunt frisbees she could very well have been the world champ. She had papers and I never bothered to register her but her lineage was from woman across the border who lived in aggazis BC. She was mostly into showing as I recall.Pretty dogs, easy going and their fur don't grab near as much stuff as a golden(had them to at one point).

Probably was Judy back in the day. She's now got the only Canadian and American Master Hunter. I believe she's also placed in a Canadian FT. Her offspring have produced the most Flatcoats with hunting titles in Flat Coat history. She's one of few who breed for field and still make show Champions.

Can't really say one way or the other happy, the woman I got the dog from lived near maple falls, and her dogs came from Canada.Flatcoats were considered the "Gamekeepers" Dog in england, just like the clumber spaniel.

I like the Flatcoats, and am planning on making it my next dog also. How much did you have to pay for yours if you don't mind saying?

Well we're working with the 3rd and hopefully last breeder since we started this quest.
We just put down a $300 deposit after going through a ridiculously long interview/application process. Upon being approved by these somewhat hoity toity old women who seem to have the corner on the market here in the PNW,  Then another $1000 final payment.
Hope he's worth it

Umm  :chuckle: I have a female black lab. Her name is Kola  :chuckle:

I have a friend who has one. He doesn't hunt with it, but it is just a nice dog. It probably wouldn't be too hard because his dog gets rabbits on his property  :dunno: :chuckle:
