Meet Samson. My brother shot this giant of a buck on the last weekend of the general season. Yep, another Washington state giant shot this year! The story isn't anything crazy. The real story is "time in the field".
We spend most all our time deer hunting in wilderness areas. We start scouting in July and hunt our areas until October; weather permitting. Every year we usually glass up some decent bucks pre-season, and have been lucky enough to harvest a few. But this buck is in a class of it's own. So, here's the actual story for this buck.
My brother was by himself and decided to go check out one of our hunting areas. The snow was about a foot deep when he decided to turn around. He went back down the mountain and tried a few spots that we have not spent much time scouting, besides looking at maps. The snow was now around 4 inches at this particular elevation. He cut some tracks on the side of the road and got out of his rig to give them a better look. There were about 5 sets of tracks. 4 does and the biggest buck track he'd ever seen. He followed them as they entered the big timber. A short slow creep later, there he was. Holding tight about 70 yards away. Boom, and down went the buck of a lifetime. A truly incredible God given gift.
So... The real story isn't drive roads until you see a monster buck. The real story is spend as much time as you can in the field. Everytime you step in the woods you learn something. You start to learn, where the bucks live, what they eat, where good genetics are, etc... Applying everything you learn is still no guarantee that you'll harvest a giant buck. But it does put you in the best position to do so, and that's all you can do. On top of that, luck is a much appreciated attribute. As I’m sure my brother will tell you.
This deer is awesome! It's evident from the pics that he's a giant, but honestly, the pics really don't do any justice for a buck like this. The mass is just out of this world. Well over 40". inside spread of 25" with a greatest outside spread of 29 5/8". I wish I was with him so I could have taken some pics of his buck in the field. Unfortunately these pics are all I got. I think they'll work.
Monster Washington State buck! I love it! Enjoy the pics!

Thank you for all your positive responses! I still cant stop looking at pics of this buck! So... I am hesitant to start this. but I'm really interested in seeing what you all think this beast scores. I did a rough green score of him when I first saw him. I am by no means an expert scorer, but I did try to do as accurate a job as I could. Also would like to add, I really don't care what this buck ends up scoring after the drying period is over. He is a monster no matter what. Look forward to hearing your guesses.
-
I put him at 183.
-
179 gross. That front right fork is going to cost him....I agree with you though. Who cares what he scores, trophies aren't always measured in inches.
-
For most hunters thats a buck of a life time great buck congrats to the hunter
-
WHAT A MASHER! Glad to see a legit story with pics.
-
just a hint, to hear 183 and 179 is proof that the pics dont do him any justice. That mass must really cover up some inches:)
-
Thats a trophy for sure on any season. any year and any deer. Congrats .
-
Early scouting and a plan is what gets the big boys...nice one...that'll make a nice mount.
-
Hello all, im new to this forum, which im kicking myself for because there are a lot of great pics and good information to be found on here! Anywho, better late than never. I was divinely blessed this year and was able to harvest this giant! I am having some severe seperation anxiety and can't wait to get him back! Unfortunately, my phone died while I was out there and I was by myself so there aren't many great field photos...but here are a couple more I found. the mass on this guy is something else once you hold those antlers in your hands, but the pics dont seem to show it! Enjoy the pics, thank you all for your congrats, and Godspeed with the rest of your season...if you're like me, once they're over, they really begin!
-
Congrats man that's a great deer!!
MS

First post with a masher mulie! Sweet!
-
Congrats! Wow! That thing is a giant! Wonder if your taxi would let you take the antlers home while the hide is getting tanned. Just have him call when he is ready to mount. We did this with a bull my father shot. Go pick up your antlers!
-
You definately shot the buck of a lifetime here in WA. Congrats to you! I'll put him in the low 190's gross. I could careless about net. :)
-
That is a hog! Congrats to the hunter. I like the Xterra also in the background.

Wow nice rack dude, all you left out was where you shot it. :bash: Please post location so people can choose between Tripod area and yours! :chuckle:

Hahaha!!! He was shot just below cant tell you mountain in the drainage of no tell em creek! :)
Good advice C-Money, thx!
I also dont care what he nets, or grosses really, he's more than a man could ask for! True WA behemoth!

Great buck and great advice from C-Money. That is what I do with my bucks is bring the antlers home and mount them on a plaque above the fireplace until the taxi is ready to do the mount, normally almost a year later so having the antlers to look at all that time is great. I think if I get one this year I will have a Euro mount done until he is ready to mount the antlers, it will cost a few bucks more but will look great on the wall for the year that you have to wait to get the real thing done.
-
think he is alittle excited :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Some more pics!

A true giant. Thanks for sharing and welcome to the site. :hello:

I bet his base is at least three to four inches in diamater. Very nice mule deer though grats.

circumference would be far greater than 3-4"

Musta' been far enough from one to have to cut him in half...
Stud Mulie

I apologize for taking so long in my response. My brother took C-money's advice and went and picked up his antlers from the taxi. We did as good a score job as we could do. We came up with 191 3/8" gross. MtnMuley was spot on.
Thank you all for the positive responses! Tell you what, Washington state has put out some monsters this year. I dont remember seeing this many BIG deer taken in one year. Congrats to all the lucky hunters!
-
Yes, thats why he said diameter, not circumference.
