I am looking at putting together a home defense shotgun. as much as i like the benelli m4, i'm not interested in spending that much. so i am going with an 870 or m500. my questions is, are there any regulations on barrel length for a shotgun? not really finding what I am looking for online.

per fed law, 18" minum.

You can buy an 18 inch factory 870 barrel with fiber optic sights... but then again, if you are shooting from the hip at down the hall distances,,, you will not need any sights.

If you have or get a popular shot gun like an 870 or Mossberg 500, the barrels offered through reputable outfits will meet the regulations for barrel length. I got a short (and legal) barrel for my Mossberg on sale through Cabela's awhile back. No major distributor is going to risk their business by selling illegal barrels.

Remington Versa Max Tactical - essentially a clone of the M4. Seems to be getting good reviews and can be had for around $1100.00
