Title: Can anyone point me in the right direction??
Post by: SpencerUSMC on August 31, 2008, 05:30:47 PM
So originally I'm from Kansas, this whole grouse thing is completely foriegn to me.  I've just got the itch to get out and do something, so tommorow I'm gonna get the dog out and let him run a little and make an attempt to find some grouse.  Either Way it will be nice to just get out and do something.  I live in Silverdale, if someone wants another guy to tag along or could just point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!!

Depends on how far you wanna drive.  NE part of the state has LOTS of grouse (read: Stevens Co, Ferry Co) but that's a ways.  We go up to Skykomish area just west of Stevens Pass on Hwy 2 and check out clear cuts off of Forest Service roads, but it's hit and miss.  Tried to get out last year and try up north near Rockport and Sauk River area, but dogs got into not one, but TWO yellow jacket ground hives (40 miles apart) and were covered in pissed off hornets!  We never saw any grouse and headed for home after the second encounter, but I hear that's still a good area.  Good luck - just getting out with the dog looking for 'em is fun!

Look for timberland behind closed gates.  Around clear cuts with roads is best.  Grouse need gravel for their digestion.  Try around Green Mountain in Kitsap, or head over the bridge to Jefferson County.  A little ways past the bridge, to the South of Hwy 104.  There's also some Pope Resources land open for walk in between Poulsbo and Kingston.  The best way to find them is to get out and start covering ground.  Even if you don't find any, it's still better than a day at work.  :)

Yeah,,, Im living in Bremerton, from Jefferson county do alot of grouse hunting over there... Lots of bird's if you know where to go. Plenty of land... If you got a good dog you shouldnt have a problem kicking a few up... If you want to get together and hit the wood's just reply back...
