Sooooooooooo, there was a certain party I know in the Desert Unit Since Saturday. Shot this monster last evening. They will post the story and more pics when they get home. Supposedly over 30" wide... :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
Oh man... I was fortunate enough to help out on a hunt last year in the Desert unit. What a great place to hunt. Saw ten years worth of good bucks there and a horse of a buck too. Looking forward to the pictures.

Congrats to the hunter on a fine buck. The pic must be terribly decieving if it goes over 30". :twocents:

-
Cant wait to read the story. Looks like a massive 3?
-
:sas: So when is your "friend" going to be home.......So I know when to log back in to see more horn porn.

No, this young man happens to go by Kyle.... his grandpa is a very honorable member on here.
:sas: So when is your "friend" going to be home.......So I know when to log back in to see more horn porn.
They have to drive to Westport area (hint hint) so it will very late tonight or tomorrow some time.
Congrats to the hunter on a fine buck. The pic must be terribly decieving if it goes over 30". :twocents:
Have no clue, just going on what I was told. Either way the young man is ecstatic. He turned down a bunch of 28 in. bucks.. something like 14 in one day.
-
Awesome!
-
Nice! Cant wait to see more!
-
Good to see they found it!
You and me both... I had volunteered to come help if they needed help...

eh..still wont catch me applying for that tag with thousands of others not even close to worth the wait when u can hunt outta state in OTC units and shoot the same quality bucks
-
That camera angle makes that rack look big. :chuckle:
-
Pass on a 28 inch 4point's and go ahead and put the hammer down on a 30inch 3point?.. if his goal was a 30iincher he has got a good mental tape measure... I was going for 30 last year and ended up with 24, my mental tape measure is junk... dandy 3.. good job
-
Over 25" is awesome in my book!
-
He turned down a bunch of 28 in. bucks.. something like 14 in one day.
Thats not what I was told from the guy helping him.
Great buck.
-
So what is the real story?
-
He turned down a bunch of 28 in. bucks.. something like 14 in one day.
Thats not what I was told from the guy helping him.
Great buck.
I am guessing that most guys couldn't tell the difference between 28" and 30" on the hoof. I know that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference without watching a deer for a long time. Either way, it would be really hard to not drop the hammer on a 28" deer or several in this case, so the story seems a little fishy. I'm not saying the guy is lying, but maybe there is a little bit of exaggeration going on. Unless you were deadset on a specific deer, then passing up multiple 28" bucks would be a very tall order for any hunter.
Did you end up helping anyone out this year that pulled a Desert tag? I know who I am going to call for some advice when I finally pull a Desert tag with 30 points in another 14 years. :chuckle:
-
Pass on a 28 inch 4point's
No, he didn't pass on just one, but 14 28"ers in one day! I gotta get this tag.
-
First off had a great time and had a lot of help from a lot of people so thanks for that. We did see the over 30 buck but he got into the fog on us and we did see several 5 points and we did pass on a thin horned 28 inch buck all because we had seen a 6x6 over 30 buck we were after we spotted it bedded in an alphalpa field at 3 in the afternoon the day before season. We tried for him each morning but he was an afternoon buck we hunted with Dick Hemore from Mar Don and we went through so many No Tresspassing and keep out and leased land signs it made you dizzy but he knows everyone and has a track record for seeing the big one. It was just my Grandson Kyle and Dick and I he saw several bucks he said were shooters that we passed on because we just wanted that one buck the deer we saw that was so big my grandson said thers a guy with a white coat on and it was early morning then Dick said a white coat hold it hey thats a buck. And it was a really big buck one of the biggest I have ever seen but by the time we got ready he walked into the fog we came back when it lifted and pushed the hill and saw about 35 deer with several nice bucks. Dick said we should try for the big one by the field so we put Kyle on the fence line at 3;30 and we went to glass some other area the fence line bordered a game refuge with alphalpa on one side refuge on the other. While doing that my wife called and my chocalate lab captain who was 14 passed away in the yard and nobody was around to help so I called and told Kyle we had to leave tonight. Anyway just before dark 3 does and a small buck came into the field down from wher Dick positioned him and instead of staying he started sneeking toward them when he turned around he saw a buck in the field behind him and thought it was the big buck it ran toward the fence and he shot knocking it down but you guessed it right into the reserve. We marked the spot and had to wait for morning. I called John and said I think we got the buck. Next morning when the fog raised we found track where it went in and saw it about 20 feet inside of the reserve. We talked to a warden and he said we could retrive it with no guns and we did. It was;nt the big one he just saw horns and thought it was him but it was a real nice 3 point 25 wide and a nice buck. Dick Hemore was a nice of guy you could ever hunt with he is 73 but just walked the legs off of Kyle and was as knowledgeable hunter as I have ever been with we enjoyed every minute of it. Again thanks to all that provided us with information and advise I thank you and to those who think I can;t judge a 30 inch buck I hope you draw the tag.

All the more reason to wait and post your success yourself, instead of false heresay posted by others apparently in the know. Glad your grandson was able to have an enjoyable hunt, and ended up with a damn fine buck.

Run, I'm not putting down this buck. It's a great buck as stated above. Huntbear, I'm pretty sure I have his 2011 sheds, I'll try to post tonight.
Original poster put 30". It clearly isn't.

Great buck!! Congrats!!!

When I spoke with Del after the buck had been shot, he is the one that told me it was the big buck they had been watching, because the shooter had thought it was when he pulled the trigger... Del and I have spoken this morning, he and I both acknowledged that information was confused and wires had been crossed...
So there is still a 30 + in. buck running around along side the game preserve.... and no that buck that I posted was NOT the original buck that the HUNTERS thought he was.
Man, everyone is so hung up on inches here.... Why not just say nice buck and go with it... next time, I will get a certified and notorized statement from the Game Department, the shooter, the local anti hunters, the chipmunks and squirrels and rattlesnakes that were within earshot of the deer being shot,,, then maybe we can just say..."congrats, nice buck" and go on... until then.. you internet police make sure you keep your IP badges valid... and your computer monitor measuring devices available at all times, and bash any and every thread where an inch measurement is mentioned.

To Del and his Grandson:
I apologize for making a mockery of your great deer, and a great hunt.. (according to the internet police) CONGRATS to both you and Kyle..
PS.... sorry about the dog dying... that really sucks and has to be a bit of a downer after a great hunt.

Thanks John we did have a really good hunt being out with my grandson is special for me. As for the buck we are happy we don;t think we failed we have a family time and I am happy I was with him. And for the douters it;s okay put in for somewhere else and my chances will be better next year. Hope everyone has a great season I love this site.

Really?? Turning this around on those who see through something false, instead of saying just saying "I jumped the gun and posted a pic of a 25"er and called it over 30" and that they passed up like 14 28"ers in a one day" or better yet waiting for somebody that was in the know to post their true story. Again, sorry to interrupt the kids cool hunt and success story, but I get sick of people posting BS and turning around pointing the finger at others instead of just bucking up taking the brunt. Guess we're brought up different. :twocents:

Great hunt Del  Sorry to hear about your dog :'( Heck I might just have to ask Kyle if he has any extra meat for this broken down, heart patient, diabetic, with bad knees, and hip, that can't get a handi cap hunting license :yike: Great story, and maybe I just might put in for that area next year, and shoot that 36 incher next year..
Hey John,,,Great lead story

Your in box is full wastickslinger but my E-mail is deldungey@hotmail.com. Thanks DEL

That's a really good looking buck and it sounds like it was an exciting hunt. What more could a guy want! I'll have to say I never carry a tape measure with me when I hunt for crying out loud. I guess if I don't measure it then nobody can disagree with my measurement and carry on for hours about it.

Del,
Good for you guys. Successful hunt, time with family. I love to see the results of your hunts. You have a great attitude and are a great asset to this site.
I killed a nice bear and three point buck this year and never posted a word about them or any pics due to the type of stuff that shows up here now.
-
Well done, Congrats!

It wouldn't have mattered except someone jumped the gun and said the kid harvested a 30" deer and passed up several 28" deer, which seemed very unlikely to a few guys. The original series of posts seemed to be a little long in the tales and short on the truth. I don't think anyone was being childish, immature, jealous or an *censored*, rather I think that several people knew more about the buck that was harvested then the the person who started the thread.
With that being said, the kid shot a very respectable deer and I don't think anyone is doubting that. I think most guys would have liked to got the story from the kid or his grandfather who actually had the facts rather than someone else putting a bunch of faulty information out there. Congrats to the kid on a nice muley!

Congrats on a gread Grandad Grandson hunt,I used to go with my grandad and hold some very very dear memories,it'll stick with your grandson for the rest of his life. That buck could have been just a 2point with an eyeguard that could be covered with a baseball cap and mean just as much if not more in 25 years than a monster shot years from now.My grandad is gone,I have one of his deer heads hanging on my wall,I see it and it floods my mind with memories of deer camp, the time he tried to show me the big buck on the hillside that I couldn't see,the riding around in the truck from drop off spot to pickup spot,The tricks we played on my uncles with my patented "Buck" Track stamp. The time I was the birddog and pushed a nice four point right to him that he blew the heart out of at 300 yards while it was on a dead run.The time the guides in montana nicknamed him "One Shot Bob" for his prowess as a rifleman,a rifleman he was but it was the icewater than ran through his veins he had a Slaughterhouse for 50 years and quite possibly killed more animals in his lifetime(90 years) than the collective whole of this reading audience at 100+ per day for 50 years.I'll ALWAYS remember the geometric lesson on killing animals " Imagine a balloon hanging from a string on the withers boy, evaluate the angle of the animals body and punch a hole through the center of the balloon.I never shot a deer that went more than 10 feet after being shot,so I guess he taught me something good or I was lucky.
It's been years since I been deer hunting and the biggest reason is I always did it with Family, Grandpa,Grandma,Great uncles, uncles well the fun is all gone now only in the memories and pictures.I've taken to the birdhunting and birddogs, and in birddogs there is a saying " Run ain't everything" In this thread right here the big picture to me is " Antlers and width ain't everything".
-
Good job Del sounds like a fun hunt. Hope you draw it next year and Kyle can help you kill one.
Sorry to hear about the dog that's tough.
