1998 8 by 7 with two points broke off including another drop tine. I haven't seen another blacktail that tore up large trees like him.

Just a side note. None of the bucks I posted above were shot in a clearcut. Most were shot in thick nasty swamps and brush where they were safe and moving in late morning.

now here is the only bad part about these 2 bucks ...they were together when my son shot his buck but once he shot his buck the bigger one jumped up and took off :yike: :bash: :bash: Yep to bad we were dialed in on the one my son shot but what do you do ? So anyways my buddy called me and wanted to go hunting a couple days later and I was tossing around taking my wife hunting this year but we never got her a license and I was going to save this buck for late archery but then again someone else would of killed it So I decided to take him and never thought he would be standing within 100 yrds of where he was when Ted shot his buck ,,,But all in all I had one hell of a time hunting with my boys and my friend .. now its my turn ...I hope :tup:

My uncles buck went 158 gross and netted only 143. Its a massive buck, once in a lifetime no doubt. The area is terrible hunting but it has monster genetics which is why I still hunt it....... And never shoot anything lolIf you have a picture post it up :tup: That be cool to see

Big forkies are why I don't want 3 pt minimum requirements for blacktail. Some of the biggest deer I have seen (body size and antlers) have been 2 point bucks.I agree with that but I would be all for a 2 pt min on the whole west coast!

All kodiak bucks. I really chuckle when people call the deer up there "Little Blacktails". Those kodiak deer will suprise you when put on the scale. Most mature bucks from the north end will go 200# in November. By Dec. 31st they will still be at about 150ish.

I missed the second biggest deer I'd ever seen last night. Went back after him this morning, set up fifty yards from where I was the day before. Called for a couple minutes and he came out of the timber all puffed up ready for a fight.I would be a sucker for that stud also. :tup: nice job kodiak.

His buck is better than average for sure. There are a ton of deer that made it to 4-5 years old because of the last three mild winters. There are some real giants hitting the dirt in the last week.

Yes. I have seen one real masher, sharing photos are no bueno for this guy. And just got report of the third buck I know of taken since Tuesday. Nothing real big, but being as nothing was moving earlier it definitely sounds like me it is improving.

Tough year! I didn't see a deer all season, except in my yard! It's still nice to be out there though!
Pretty much the way I feel about it.
I hunted a lot out of my ground blinds this year and they are definitely not as conducive to seeing a lot of what is going on in the woods as are tree stands. I never get bored in a tree stand, but in a ground blind when I cannot see anything except what is in front of my windows I do get bored. Even so it is still nice being out there.

It was one heckuva pack out. Out of a nasty STEEP ravine than 3/4 of a mile over blowdown, down and across another creek and up another ravine. Only to get to my bike to find the front tire COMPLETELY flat. Ahhh. 3 miles out on the rim still beat walking with a 75# pack.
Shot him at 2PM was back to the vehicle at 8:45 or so. I noticed something weird about his face when I first saw him come in behind me. I didn't notice he only had one eye until I started working on him. I ended up skinning, quartering and packing him up on about a 3' ledge with ZERO other flat ground to lay anything on. I'm WOOPED! On my way in to get the last 25# that I hung in a tree.
I'm very happy with this buck and lucky to have him.

Ya I was able to rattle him in. I was actually hoping to get my buddies son on a xxl buck that was in the area. So I dropped them off glassed for about 30 minuets then headed into a cottonwood patch about a half mile away. I got on a good side hill trail with some good rubs. Started dragging a scent rag behind me and spraying every low hanging branch with ambush. Got to a nice spot where I could see about 50 yards. One quick rattling sequence, knelt down to take my pack off, glance down the trail and see a nice buck running directly to me nose on the ground. He ran into about 10-12 yards, maybe closer. Got a good frontal shot on him. Happened so fast I could hardly believe it. Got a text from my buddy, “already? Seriously “ little luck with me that morning.
What a perfect looking buck! So, you didn’t plan for him to come running right at you is what your saying? :chuckle:

You know the biggest rack never mattered to me unless there was a group of bucks wandering through and I happen to get to pick one of the three, etc. The most unique ones are the ones I get excited about. This buck is cool and way funner to lay claim to than an ordinary forked horn. Now I have to go over to the how do you say it thread and ask if it's Forked horn or Fork-Ed horn. I'm disappointed Every time I get on here with the lack of new hog Blacktails killed. Come on guys I some motivation.
Zip again this year for me. Hunted pre dawn to after dusk on Thursday and Friday. Came home and got the gear all cleaned up and put away. I only saw 4 does, one spike and one forky. The forkey I passed on in hopes he'll be something worth tagging in four years, five or six for the spike. After all, if everyone keeps shooting anything with a legal spike, that's all we'll ever see. Besides, I'm after the venison more than another antlers, and those spikes only net 30lbs of tiny stakes and burger. Now a full grown blacktail hog,,, well that's something worth packing out and putting in the freezer.
Here's to next year!

He's definitely not a pure blacktail. I left the area, sticking my broken arrow in the ground at first blood. Ran over to a friends gathering him up, and we began blood trailing. We tracked him until mid night when we heard him bounce, never bedding down. We backed out, and I returned at 6:30 am. I lost blood at an old skidded road, after some time of extensive searching. I started using onyx on trail and starting a grid pattern of searching. At 4pm my buddies son, a blood hound came to help. I showed him the grids I had completed and the ridge I was going to next, he went to the last blood. Right at dark he called me saying he thought he found a speck of blood heading up to a different ridge. We pulled out. The next morning I had to be at work, it had been 36 hours since the shot, my buddy was elk hunting and after his son called him, he had a good idea of where he might be, have extensive knowledge of the area while shed hunting, and finding big buck beds. My work day ended the phone rang. And he asked where I was, he told me to meet him at his house. I said I needed to go home and change, he replied, no time for that. I have an hour, then going to watch kids football game and back to elk hunting. We walked in from a different direction toward the beds, and the buck stood up, the shot this time was true. When shot the first time while he spun my arrow hit him in from of shoulder driving back into outside shoulder. Sorry for attire. But he was not wasted. My heart is at ease

The evening of the 12th saw me sitting in my stand by some apple trees, watching a 120 class 4x5 gobble them up, for the past 4 evenings he would come in about 1900ish and leave just before dark and return during the night with my obsession. During the cover of darkness the play fighting on the cam was intensifying. I figured the next five days would be my best opportunity at my obsession, the Deer cast lunar calendar had it marked as the best days for the month. At about 19:35 that evening, as mentioned the 4x5 became alert, a big maple right in front of me slightly left blocked my view, of the direction he was looking. Then he leaned forward like he was sniffing something, I leaned hard to my right to see what he was seeing, and bingo. The 4x5 and my obsession were more to nose. The pushing and shoving ensued, my heart raced. I closed my eye to gather my thoughts. The clinking of antler stopped. I opened my eyes heart racing, to see the 4x5 had retreated in my direction. My obsession quartering slightly away, looking back at him. I came to full draw settled my pin, not thinking he was probable seeing me as the 4x5 was just stand feet from my tree, the arrow loosed, he dropped and spun 180 degrees toward me. The nock glowed and my heart sank. I thought I hit him high behind the shoulder, arrow snapped, showing 5” still inside of him and 5” of blood on the shaft. Thinking maybe an outside lung. No exit hole.

Those Cali blacktails shouldn't be counted the same as WA blacktails, they're in their own league (same as southern Oregon BTs). It just isn't right :chuckle:

Dave Jones out of Olympia, he doesn’t advertise as he’s retired and turning away alot of stuff, but I was referred to him and have seen his blacktails in person. Was blown away by his work.
