I do not know but you guys have me all fired up for late archery ...I can not wait to hit it again ...I had a good time hunting with my son and one of my best friends but for some reason the people I take hunting always seem to kill the bigger deer  :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: What the hell is up with that ?  8)

now here is the only bad part about these 2 bucks ...they were together when my son shot his buck but once he shot his buck the bigger one jumped up and took off  :yike: :bash: :bash: Yep to bad we were dialed in on the one my son shot but what do you do ? So anyways my buddy called me and wanted to go hunting a couple days later and I was tossing around taking my wife hunting this year but we never got her a license and I was going to save this buck for late archery but then again someone else would of killed it So I decided to take him and never thought he would be standing within 100 yrds of where he was when Ted shot his buck ,,,But all in all I had one hell of a time hunting with my boys and my friend .. now its my turn ...I hope

Your going to find alot of the hard core blacktail hunters won't post their pictures or stories but the same can be said for some muley hunters I know.

Yep!

Then again the biggest I have ever seen mostly are in the burbs in people's yards!

Bellingham, Anacortes,  Whidby Island (dam that buck was smart! :bash:),  and those pics that someone took out at the coast not to long ago.

My best.  Taken quite a few years ago on the Olympic Peninsula.  Cant find the pics from the time it was taken so this pic will have to do.  I also have a matching set of sheds that are likely from this same buck, or at least the same genes.  Found them probably less than 10 yards from where I shot this one.  Still kicking myself for not mounting it.

We usually put in for trophy hunts intending to draw a good tag or build points. She drew the Mudflow youth bull tag and the Skookumchuck late buck tag in 2011 at age 13 and filled both tags. A 4pt blacktail and a 6x6 bull. Both on video for Titan outdoors.

All kodiak bucks.  I really chuckle when people call the deer up there "Little Blacktails".  Those kodiak deer will suprise you when put on the scale.  Most mature bucks from the north end will go 200# in November.  By Dec. 31st they will still be at about 150ish.

Not the buck I was after, but I'm a sucker for big old 2 points.

Thats an awesome buck Krout! Some true monsters on this thread. Its cool how much interest there is in blacktail hunting. It seems to be picking up momentum which is a great thing. Unfortunately we are losing more and more timber company ground each year in which to hunt these ghosts. Not the thread for this and I am well aware of the complications but the public really needs to come up with a solution to the timber land public access problem in western WA.

Great deer everyone.

His buck is better than average for sure. There are a ton of deer that made it to 4-5 years old because of the last three mild winters. There are some real giants hitting the dirt in the last week.

Those Alaska bucks are swollen big time, that's part of my dream hunt, a stud Sitka, Yukon moose and a woverine!! I could care less about a grizz unless they let me spear one and I don't really care about sheep or caribou, my ultimate list of Alaska animals are the Sitka, wolverine and the moose.. wouldn't mind cracked a wolf in the middle of winter

I saw a nice buck that was taken first week of Archery Season.  The guy has a stack of bones in the back of his garage that anyone would be proud of any of.

Has anyone seen an uptick in activity with the rain?  Opening weekend wasn't really prime BT hunting weather.  I would love to see some Blacktail pics from this year!

Yes.  I have seen one real masher, sharing photos are no bueno for this guy.  And just got report of the third buck I know of taken since Tuesday.  Nothing real big, but being as nothing was moving earlier it definitely sounds like me it is improving.

I got this Buck at about 9 a.m. October 30th. I was starting to get a little dejected,I hadn't seen many animals during the season although I had hunted fairly hard, spending the first half trying to get my son his first deer (to no avail). Then two full days solo. I was ready to shoot any legal animal because I wanted to focus on my son again for late season. So when this guy popped out, it was... "oh baby"! I have  shot fork horns the last several years and it's nice to be into a big one again. A big "shout-out" to Jakeland!, thanks for sharing your knowledge of the area, the pointers and of black tails in general.

Pretty much the way I feel about it.

I hunted a lot out of my ground blinds this year and they are definitely not as conducive to seeing a lot of what is going on in the woods as are tree stands.  I never get bored in a tree stand, but in a ground blind when I cannot see anything except what is in front of my windows I do get bored.  Even so it is still nice being out there.

Here's mine from last night. I will post a story on it in a bit. He came in from behind me and started working my estrous drag. When he started following where I came from I knew it was now or never. I punched my multi season tag on this guy and was able to make it happen with Archery in a spot that is remote which I have put a lot of work into (cutting trails, camera, stand location and prep).

It was one heckuva pack out. Out of a nasty STEEP ravine than 3/4 of a mile over blowdown, down and across another creek and up another ravine. Only to get to my bike to find the front tire COMPLETELY flat. Ahhh. 3 miles out on the rim still beat walking with a 75# pack.

Shot him at 2PM was back to the vehicle at 8:45 or so. I noticed something weird about his face when I first saw him come in behind me. I didn't notice he only had one eye until I started working on him. I ended up skinning, quartering and packing him up on about a 3' ledge with ZERO other flat ground to lay anything on. I'm WOOPED! On my way in to get the last 25# that I hung in a tree.

I'm very happy with this buck and lucky to have him.

Damn y'all, I cannot believe this thread. It's an honor to have started the most epic Blacktail thread in Huntwa History YEARS AGO lol. Nothing big for me this year during general season, but I have a Toelke Pika longbow and some kudupoints ready to go, and a multi season tag. So there's still a chance! Keep em coming guys, this thread still motivates me.

Ya I was able to rattle him in. I was actually hoping to get my buddies son on a xxl buck that was in the area. So I dropped them off glassed for about 30 minuets then headed into a cottonwood patch about a half mile away. I got on a good side hill trail with some good rubs. Started dragging a scent rag behind me and spraying every low hanging branch with ambush. Got to a nice spot where I could see about 50 yards. One quick rattling sequence, knelt down to take my pack off, glance down the trail and see a nice buck running directly to me nose on the ground. He ran into about 10-12 yards, maybe closer. Got a good frontal shot on him.  Happened so fast I could hardly believe it. Got a text from my buddy, “already? Seriously “ little luck with me that morning.

This big boy was taken in 1982 on the Ft Lewis Reservation It is a 5 point w/eye guards. Taken with my 12 ga
using slugs at 50 yds. I don't hunt any longer because of my advanced age (81), but if I did, Ft Lewis would be my primary area.

I knew he was in the area, but I know nothing about rattling. I had chased him around a lot, It was shotgun season on the Fort, so it took some time to pin him down.

You know the biggest rack never mattered to me unless there was a group of bucks wandering through and I happen to get to pick one of the three, etc. The most unique ones are the ones I get excited about. This buck is cool and way funner to lay claim to than an ordinary forked horn. Now I have to go over to the how do you say it thread and ask if it's Forked horn or Fork-Ed horn. Thanks for all the neat blacktail pics guys! Keep'em coming!

It's pronounced "Two Point" or "Fork Horn".
Unless you're from back east where it's a four point.
Go figure.

I really like that drop tine he's got going, gives it some real good character

Here's mine from last year. I felt a very brief pang of guilt when I saw his eye was all cataracted over (no wonder I could move around as much as I did!), but I was still stoked to get my first blacktail.

That first/top one is a masher.  Rack does not have any BT characteristics at all that I can make out.  Looks like a WT (tines coming off a main beam) with a really cool start on a flying dropper.  Very cool!

I'm disappointed Every time I get on here with the lack of new hog Blacktails killed. Come on guys I some motivation.

Zip again this year for me. Hunted pre dawn to after dusk on Thursday and Friday. Came home and got the gear all cleaned up and put away.  I only saw 4 does, one spike and one forky.  The forkey I passed on in hopes he'll be something worth tagging in four years, five or six for the spike.  After all, if everyone keeps shooting anything with a legal spike, that's all we'll ever see.  Besides, I'm after the venison more than another antlers, and those spikes only net 30lbs of tiny stakes and burger.  Now a full grown blacktail hog,,, well that's something worth packing out and putting in the freezer.

Here's to next year!

Also one my grandpa got in the 70s. Still has the tag on it. He had the horns in his shop so they aged well. Took a hide off one of my dad's bucks and mounted it for my GPA for a Christmas present. After he passed, I got it to hang in my game room

It's crazy for me to see all the blacktails with eye guards. When I used to hunt BT's it was very uncommon to see them with them. Now you see them a lot more. My dad has a young buck in his yard that is a decent 2x2 and it has eye guards. Maybe it is a strong jean or something.

Found one of his last years sheds, they are the biggest I’ve ever seen on a blacktail (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230630/f50a956e5431cba84c9eb891a60d1a60.jpg)

Is that pretty close to the line where the BTs stop and the mule deer start? Looks like a bench leg (hybrid/muddy genes) to me. Most of the bench legs I get on cam will fork closer to the bases than a pure muleys but still throw a bigger rack than a BT.

How dare you?! A die hard blacktail guy would rather you call his kids slow witted and his wife fugly before you call his blacktail hybrids.  :chuckle: Trying to draw a "line" where blacktail stop and mule deer start is like trying to draw a line on a map with a can of spray paint. Having no clue as to where in the world that trail cam pic is from, thats a super buck, no matter what it is.

He's definitely not  a pure blacktail. But by Washington's standards he's a blacktail cause he's west of the pct

The evening of the 12th saw me sitting in my stand by some apple trees, watching a 120 class 4x5 gobble them up, for the past 4 evenings he would come in about 1900ish and leave just before dark and return during the night with my obsession. During the cover of darkness the play fighting on the cam was intensifying. I figured the next five days would be my best opportunity at my obsession, the Deer cast lunar calendar had it marked as the best days for the month. At about 19:35 that evening, as mentioned the 4x5 became alert, a big maple right in front of me slightly left blocked my view, of the direction he was looking. Then he leaned forward like he was sniffing something, I leaned hard to my right to see what he was seeing, and bingo. The 4x5 and my obsession were more to nose. The pushing and shoving ensued, my heart raced. I closed my eye to gather my thoughts. The clinking of antler stopped. I opened my eyes heart racing, to see the 4x5 had retreated in my direction. My obsession quartering slightly away, looking back at him. I came to full draw settled my pin, not thinking he was probable seeing me as the 4x5 was just stand feet from my tree, the arrow loosed, he dropped and spun 180 degrees toward me. The nock glowed and my heart sank. I thought I hit him high behind the shoulder, arrow snapped, showing 5” still inside of him and 5” of blood on the shaft. Thinking maybe an outside lung. No exit hole.
I left the area, sticking my broken arrow in the ground at first blood. Ran over to a friends gathering him up, and we began blood trailing. We tracked him until mid night when we heard him bounce, never bedding down. We backed out, and I returned at 6:30 am. I lost blood at an old skidded road, after some time of extensive searching. I started using onyx on trail and starting a grid pattern of searching. At 4pm my buddies son, a blood hound came to help. I showed him the grids I had completed and the ridge I was going to next, he went to the last blood. Right at dark he called me saying he thought he found a speck of blood heading up to a different ridge. We pulled out. The next morning I had to be at work, it had been 36 hours since the shot, my buddy was elk hunting and after his son called him, he had a good idea of where he might be, have extensive knowledge of the area while shed hunting,  and finding big buck beds. My work day ended the phone rang. And he asked where I was, he told me to meet him at his house.  I said I needed to go home and change, he replied, no time for that. I have an hour, then going to watch kids football game and back to elk hunting. We walked in from a different direction toward the beds, and the buck stood up, the shot this time was true. When shot the first time while he spun my arrow hit him in from of shoulder driving back into outside shoulder. Sorry for attire. But he was not wasted. My heart is at ease

A vid just showed up in my social media of the holiest of Blacktails.   HUGE non typical that would put 99% of the muley world to shame.   California somewhere.   I'm not a vid guy or I'd post it.  I'm sure it will get here.   That thing was an obvious blacktail of the most unholiest of proportions.   LIkely better than a bigfoot video

Those Cali blacktails shouldn't be counted the same as WA blacktails, they're in their own league (same as southern Oregon BTs). It just isn't right  :chuckle:

This years contribution to my favorite thread, crappy pic sorry. Big bodied mature buck, but not the best antler genetics. Like I’ve said before, when you see the big body and the white face sometimes that’s enough.

Should have the shoulder mount back in a month or so, cannot wait, this will be my first mounted buck ever
