Well me and a buddy are looking for somewhere to elk hunt in Washington/St Helens area... I am wondering if you guys can help us out on where to go were not looking for huge horns just want to put some meat in the freezer. Can you guys tell us what units/roads or anything you know that might help us? Put your :twocents: in. Thanks

nobodys gonna give up their honey hole, but my buddy got good info calling WDFW and asking, they were very happy to give him some good direction, so far he has glassed a few potential shooters scouting for 3 days, give it a try

best thing in the sthelens area for rifle would be to look small..look for sleeper areas, maybe go close to towns..there loads of hunters in that whole area so your gona have to realy spend lots of time figuring out were the elk go when being presured

The very best place is always the spot where you count the most vehicles parked at a gate. Just pull in behind them and join in.
The next best place to hunt elk is where you find the most fresh elk sign.
Good luck!

I would try NW Trek....they have a few dandy bulls in there! :chuckle:
No seriously, get in the woods away from the roads anywhere in 520 and you will most likely find some elk. Once the shooting starts opening day, the elk tend to hang out in the thick reprod and in the deep dark holes in the tall timber. There are so many road hunters that the elk typically don't get pushed very hard once they find the timber away from the roads. I personally like to hunt the back behind the locked gates a few miles because I tend to see more animals, but I have seen elk all over the tree farm. Good luck to you!
