is the springfield xd 40 and/or 45 the best pistol? any better? i am looking for a good dependable pistol and heard this is it. thanks, mike w

Now you done it....

.45
-
An XD in 45 is gonna be hard to beat. Granted a question like this begs a lot of follow up questions as to what the end use is, but as a generic answer I'd go with the 45.
-
Make sure and hold the new XD-S it is a single stack 45.

I have a 45xd and sold both my Glocks after getting it.

Are you talking about an xds?
-
Best pistol for what?
All around carry, plinking, target shooting in a semi auto?
Then if you like the agronomics of the Springfield, it is the best.
If you like the Glock series pistol better then the Glock is the best.
Most modern semi auto handguns will boil down to what features you are looking for and personal preference.

Yes

Too top heavy for me. I went with the Glock.
-
Glock feels pretty top heavy to me, too. I've only shot an XD once or twice and I have no complaints about it. Boils down to what feels comfortable to you.
I would go with a .40 S&W. Much cheaper to shoot than a .45, and the recoil is much more manageable. You're not going to kill people more dead with .45 over a .40. :twocents:
-
Just buy a Glock and a Springfield and toss in a 1911 or two or three. It's worked for me.

For Concealed Carry? My XD40 subcompact is awesome and very dependable. I would stake my life on it.
That and a Blackhawk CQC holester and its a perfect fit for any thing you do.

both the 40 and 45 are very dependable so its up to you really. I carry a 45, mainly because I already had multiple so for reloading it was a easy choice. both have easy one shot stopping power. Look into a gatco in the waste band holster, picked one up today wore it all day and really like it  nothing like being able to carry a 5in 45acp with 14 rounds in your swim trunks concealed :chuckle:
-
i was dead set on an xd compact and ended up with a sig pro 2022 in .40. i already have 2 springfield 1911's so this was stepping out of the norm for me a little, but i honestly feel the sp2022 is where it's at. the xd just didn't do it for me, no matter how hard i tried.

Im springfield, my wife is glock. I absolutely LOVE my XD .40. I will never part with that gun. Had it for over 4 years and shoot it fairly regular and have never had a FTF. Im looking at picking up a .45 now for myself because I love the .40 so much. Im 100% now a springfield man, my wife is glock because it fit her hands better. But you cant go wrong with a .40 or a .45!
-
I love my xd9sc as my edc. If springfield made a 10mm like my g20 I'd sell my glock. :twocents:

45acp is a much lower-pressure round than 40SW...Less muzzle blast and recoil isn't has sharp.
40 ammo is a little cheaper.
I prefer 45acp.
-
I have 3 xd 40's. It really boils down to your personal preference. the 40 will have more snappy recoil than the 45 but carries more rounds. i bet if I started off shooting 45's I would probably feel the same way about them. I wouldn't worry about ammo prices and all that. I don't think it's enough to sway the decision for me. if you shoot enough to make the price a big deal you should reload. I would say 40 but that is MY opinion. shoot whatever feels best and you can handle. if you can't control the recoil of the 40 properly to continue with follow up shots then I wouldn't buy one. :twocents:

.45
-
I have the 4" .45. The gun is great and a little bulky under my shirt. Hard to get into a rave that way! The .40 might be better for concealment and if you hit what you're aiming at 2-5 yards away, It won't make a whole lot of difference.
-
I own the XDM in 40 and it is my carry of choice, I would buy another one. No matter if you buy the 40 or 45 I bet you will be happy there great pistols.

I recently bought a 9mm xdm, and I really like it. I did a lot of research on 9mm vs .40 vs .45 before I bought the pistol, and this was my conclusion... Many people rail against the 9mm as being underpowered, but this is not true. Standard .45acp loads fly at such low velocities that at longer ranges they can have difficulty making it though thick clothing and penetrating deep enough to do sufficient damage to the target. With that being said, 9mm, .40, and .45acp at close range are going to be equally inefficient at stopping a person with one shot in a self defense scenario. In order to kill or incapacitate a person in one shot with a pistol you must hit them directly in the head or the heart or the round must penetrate deep enough to completely sever the CNS. It is not realistic for me to assume that I can make a one shot kill with a pistol in a self defense scenario on a moving target that may be firing back at me, so I went with the pistol that can carry the most ammo - the 9mm. My 9mm xdm is a 19+1 weapon, and with the new 9mm self-defense loads the 9mm is a very effective self-defense pistol. I bought the full-size 9mm, btw. If you are planning on carrying I would buy the smaller version.
If you do not trust the 9mm to do the job then I would certainly go with the .40. I found no practical reason to have a pistol that fires .45acp. With all of that being said, it doesn't really matter too much what size of bullets the pistol you have fires. If you can't hit the target you might as well just shoot peas through a straw. Get the pistol you feel most comfortable with and can handle the best.
I hope that helped.

Self defense encounter will be < 30 ft. probably. I like the .45.
-
.45!!!!!!!!!!!
.40's suck!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
:) :) I shoot 45s. but 40s do not suck they will kill just fine. but then I shoot 1911'S.

I have a XD45 and think it is the cats meow Added crimson trace grips and think you can't go wrong with the 45. I know the first time I picked it up it felt natural in my hand
Plus I like the 13 in the mag and 1 in the tube more than enough

22's kill too, as do 380's and 9's but .40's still suck. :chuckle:
-
all that being said, does anyone have an xd for sale? thanks, mike w
-
Although many people will disagree, I think .40 is a compromise round. I think small and fast AND fat and slow are both good strategies for a bullet as both the 9mm and 45ACP have proven themselves formidable man killers. 40 has both their weaknesses and half their strengths. If you like a big bullet, go 45. If you like a tall stack and fast speed, go 9mm. Either one will do the job.
-
blah blah blah... gimme a 9mm , 40 cal, 45 cal I'll still get the job done
MS

40 nothing around here I cant kill with it under 30 yds!

Sooo that's why the military is going back to the 45acp huh? no stopping power at long ranges? hmm funny :dunno:

I'm pretty sure the prohibition against using hollow points is a factor for the military decision. If I had to just use ball ammo then I would think a .45 would be better than a 9mm or even a .40. We aren't limited to that. Neither is the LE community. Many police departments are dropping .45's and .40's and going back to the 9mm. Much better grouping of multiple shots is an often cited factor.
I feel the need to sound off because I do think its sad that a large strata of the gun owning community simply thinks that 'bigger is better.' If you're interested in studying what is hardest hitting it would be good to review the nature of kinetic energy: 1/2mass x velocity^2. Velocity has a much greater effect on the energy of the round.
.45's are great. They'll kill and 1911's make for nice looking guns. The round also requires about 2x the amount of raw materials to make as one 9mm round, which will kill someone dead just as much. More materials = more costs. Recoil on the 9mm is much more controlled for a majority of shooters, making those followup shots far more effective.

I agree completely, and went with a xd9sc, and couldn't be happier. More rounds in case I screw up!

I also have the 45. It is a good weapon and is accurate. I have the longer barrel.
-
i think i will go with the 40. they are $469 AT TRI-STATE IN MOSES LAKE. the 45 is $489. that is cheaper than most. mike w
-
I have the xd 40 cal.subcompact for personal carry with magazine extension
Great small carry gun with plenty of poop.
-
Too top heavy for me. I went with the Glock.
My thoughts too and I've got "d cup hands ". Glock 29sf 10mm is a lot better.
