Title: Sights
Post by: Kioti on November 12, 2012, 02:49:49 PM
What is the preferred sight distances you sight your bow at for hunting...20 - 30 - 40 yards?
Also, any recommendations on who makes a good sight to mount on my bow?

Just thought I would toss this one out there, as I am totally new to bow hunting.

Typically you see 20,30,40,50,60 depending on how many pins you have. Top dollar will be spot Hogg, Montana black gold, and Axcel. If on a budget trophy ridge makes pretty good sights for the money. Truglo has very bright pins but certain models can be fairly frail.

i have 5 pins n go from 20 to 60.i run a custom black gold ascent with a vengeance head so i can use my 5th pin as a slider n have shot out to 100 yards, black gold has amazing customer service n fast custom shop.id highly recommend them.that bn said i had a tru glow sight that cost half as much n was just as bright just rougher adjustments n was fixed but was a great sight

Id go w black gold also... hey earlmarne how do you like your ascent I'm thinking about getting one and was wondering if you have enough room with the five pin or would you go with the three pin? What does the vengeance head do??

i got the 2 inch scope n i dropped my 5th pin to the bottom n am only 2 3rds up the housing with my 20 yard pin.this is my first high end sight so i dont have alot to compare to.i think i will be buying an axcel or spott hogg soon.the slider is cool but it stresses me out having it there so i think i want a straight fixed pin next go around.the micro adjust pins have some slop in them while adjusting that takes some time to get dead nuts but once buttoned up its rock solid.also i dont like how wide the pins are.when shooting 60 or farther the pin is very distracting n hard to focus on the actual fiber for me.the vengeance head just gave me 3rd axis adjustment.ppl swear by these things n im new to archery tackle, its a solid sight n the dimming in bright sun is great i just have found a couple things that are not perfect for me personally.

Some great advice here gentlemen.  Do appreciate it.
Dang they don't give that Black Gold Ascent away do they.
I might have to take a drive down south to Cabela's or even stop in at Riverside and see what they have.
Right now I have a 3 pin Axion Vortex....just looking to upgrade.

Spot-hogg would be my number one choice.

20, 30, 40, 50, 60 with an axcel armor tech. 1 major other thing is pin size iv you ask me. Make sure you go with the .019 pins. Better site picture.

I'm going though the same process as well, I really like the sight picture of the spott hogg but I hear the adjustments aren't as good as some of the others like the axcel armor tech, any thought?

I have no experience with the spott hogg but the micro adjustments on the armor tech are awesome.

I've been eyeing those armor techs for a while myself.  If they weren't $200 I'd have one already.  It's hard to justify dropping that kind of money on a sight.

I bought a Black gold  5 pin sight three years ago and was telling everyone on here how great I thought it was. Now after three years I am considering replacing it, they just are not as well made as it should be.  I hunt hard but by no means am I putting my equipment to any extreme.  My purple cover has broken each year I have had it and only one time do I know how it broke ( slipped on a wet log and smacked it ) . Yes they stand behind their product and have sent me out 4 covers, two at a time each year I broke it. This year while hunting I noticed that the fiber optics were drooping and I could see the fiber optic below the black pin and it was so bright of a line it would of been hard to shoot that day.  I did pull them tight and tightened a small screw that holds them tight but they still drooped. I had to put a very small drop of crazy glue on each optic in the middle of the black pin to keep it up and level. At this point I have my cover scotch taped & my fiber optics glued and for the price I think this is crappy @ 3 years old. I am losing confidence in it & probably will replace it next year with something else, for sure if I get a permit.  I worried about it enough over the last two years that I keep a small sock on the sight for protection.  After my experience I say look at a different brand.  Mike

If I was buying a new sight, I would look at the one, can't remember the name, that has the no-peep circle in a circle thingy on it.  I had one of those on my last bow and it was awesome, no peep sight needed and it really showed you if you were torquing the bow.

Looked it up IQ Bowsite, but holy croy, what a price....   :yike:

axcel armortech ftw.

4 pins.  20, 30, 40, 50

1 and a 1/2 thousandths of an inch on the microadjust.  rock solid for 4 years.  if it broke today, i'd buy another one tomorrow....and then something expensive for the wife.

I use these guys, http://schafferarchery.com/ (http://schafferarchery.com/) Really cool sight I like that you can take it off real easy locks in place well! No issues!
