Title: Ok, need a better goose call!
Post by: Kola16 on November 12, 2012, 08:46:58 PM
I am not really a goose hunter (in fact beside having a few floaters, and a $7 call, not at all  :yike: ), and I need a call. I have a cheapo $7 piece o  :crap: I have read that short reeds are better so I will be going with that. What is the best call in your opinions for $20-$40, or maybe even $50 (although $50 cuts into my decoy money  :chuckle: )  :dunno:

they are probably a little out of your $ range but if you can find a used zink's Nightmare on stage you won't regret it :twocents:

I cannot speak to your price range, but I have a Zink Money Maker that destroys the geese. I mean, I can turn them in circles, and I'm not even close to a decent caller.

the money maker is great too. I never thought I was very hot at using a goose call and then I tried the money maker and the NOS -which IMo is a little easier for me to work. I couldn't believe how effortless these calls were.

find a used short reed on a forum and buy it.  Winglock, Saunders, Basin.... those are what i have but i dont think they are all that different. i learned on the winglock and turn to my I5 or Traffic most of the time now.

BUT, if you want to be better goose hunter, buy good decoys, put them on goose *censored*, and dont call.

If you just wear a Zink on your lanyard they will come.  If you have two on their, they will just fall at your feet!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Go to Cabelas and test a few.  Buy the one that works best for you in your price range!  Then practice so your not that annoying guy that can't call and never shuts up and blows the birds out with constant warning calls!

I hate that duck hunting! It drives me crazy  :bash: I have told some guys to shut the  up. They didn't listen  :bash:

I have a Haydel's Carbon Kwacker that I like a lot. I was looking at the Carbon Honker. Anyone uses this call  :dunno:

What about the Zink power clucker  :dunno:

I use a buck Gardner Hammer II goose call, I believe it was $30 or so at Sportsmans, and I have had good enough success with it that I have no reason to drop $100+ on a goose call. Not knocking the higher end calls by any means-they sound awesome but for me personally its hard to justify.

My back up call is an old school lohman goose call, but the hammer II really pulls them in for me anyway

I know this is my first post but I thought I would weigh in on this because I was in the same position last hunting season into this spring. I was hunting an area with a lot of geese and thought I needed a goose call. So I went out and bought the Buck Gardner Honker II. I thought it was the bee’s knees. I called in some geese and thought it was great. This spring I wanted to learn how to run the call a little better so I got bad grammar dvd, which I highly recommend. I couldn’t get the Honker II to sound and operate like I would have liked it to. The intro to that dvd talks about picking the “perfect” goose call. He doesn’t talk about brand or even material. He does say though don’t spend 35 dollars on a call and think it’s the best call out there. I still thought he was crazy and kept working through the dvd. After finally being frustrated and making the honker II squeak more than anything I decided it was time to go look for new calls. I tried a couple and the Zink Money Maker fit my hand and calling style the best. The sound quality between that and the Honker II are crazy. I am not saying you can’t kill geese with a cheaper call just saying you do get what you pay for. A call will last a lifetime if you treat it well. I would recommend saving more and getting a better call that works better or you could be like me with an extra goose call that just sits on the bottom of your decoy bag.

Primos *censored* Tonk surprisingly makes some damn good clucks and come back calls. My GO TOO call is the Foiles Strait Meat Honker. Great call and gets the Big ones to turn and set up nice. Good luck. If you go to cabelas, sometimes the guys at the call counter will preform some calls for ya. Give it a try.

Just my  :twocents:.....but you should save for another year and get a Saunders Traffic.  It's super easy to blow and you can do just about anything with it.   I'm a newbie with it and even I can make it sounds like a goose.  My buddy is a flippin' Wizard with his and makes it sounds like 100 geese sitting on the ground having a conversation.

Save your dough.....buy a Traffic.

I run a zink nos, and a zink cod... Easy calls to learn on, and that bad grammar DVD is a very good DVD to learn from, or foiles has a great DVD too... I know the acrylic get spendy, but you won't regret the extra money, and they last... A few others that are good are the money maker and the little man...  Take and go blow some calls figure out the best one and then look around for best price online.

Buck Gardner makes some good short reeds in the $30-$50 range. So does Knight and Hale. In reality if your know what your doing on your call you can make it sound good no matter what. There is a lot more technique tho to using a short reed than your traditional flute. I recommend watching several instructional videos to aid you in practice. Here is a great intro video that will give you the basics

Where are you located. I have more goose calls than the local Cabelas so if you want to try a few before you buy one let me know.
