so a buddy of mine and i were planning on an idaho whitetail hunt together the week of thanksgiving, but he can no longer go. i have got my wt tag and scheduled a week off of work to go so i still plan on leaving this friday morning for idaho. the problem i am having now is that we were gonna stay with a guy that he knows over there. my buddy also fishes over there so he knows some of the country. anyway im gonna pack up a camp and all hunting gear and go anyhow. i am planning on camping on public land and may bring an atv. i will be hunting 10a or there abouts. i have never hunted idaho before so if anyone has any info on the camping or atv use in 10a i would really appreciate it, or any other useful info. thanks

Sounds awesome,go find some new country.

I hope you feel better about it once you get there. Don't give up. Anything can happen especially this time of year

Is that Dwarshack reservoir area?

Answered my own question when I hit send I hunted it for Deer back in 1998 with a friend of mine saw Elk and Turkey every day and missed a nice 3 point whitetail. My friend tagged a decent two point Whitetail and I ate my tag cause I wanted a buck (it was any whitetail then) we camped out of Headquarters LOTS of area to explore and if it is still they same can take your quad most anywhere as long as it does not say no motorized vehicles. Good luck!

im really looking forward to it, it should be a lot of fun! thanks for the replies. RB what did the country look like where you were hunting?
-
Should be a great time, beautiful country to explore. Be safe and enjoy!

if anyone has hunted idaho and has any useful information they are willing to share that would be great. i am not asking anyone where to go, i have seen how that turns out sometimes lol. things like what the country is like, is there a lot of private timber land, should i plan on glassing a lot, any good maps that you have found, ect.

I hunted out of headquarters over thanksgiving week a few years back. Bring chains. Lots of rut activity. Some real nice bucks. Lots of roads open to atvs. Bring a woof tag.
-
yeah 10a is good depends on where your going in the unit, elk river? headquarters? your gonna be a long way from nowhere and some early snow could be fun! lots of roads all public land get a wolf tag just in case! you will see sign! lots of big clearcuts!
-
:yeah:
LOTs of roads and a long way from anywhere be prepared! clear cuts open timber and lots of brush as well. Saw a moose when we were there too. Sounds like you should get as wolf tag when you get there best of luck you will have a great time

oh and rattling horns! probably the most effective method, along regrowth units with sign! backside of elk butte really good, all the way to granddad bridge! glass clearcuts and be ready to shoot a long ways!
-
thanks for all the replies! i cant wait to get over there! have any of you guys seen a wolf in that area? or just lots of sign?

My dad lives up there. The wolves are very thick. He said the deer and elk are not acting normal. he got his this year sitting on an orchard just a couple miles from town. He said they are hanging out closer and aren't getting pressured by the wolves so bad. Hope it works out for ya. If I wasn't on deployment I would take leave and go. I know some good spots. p.s. All the deer my family has shot up there this year were in the afternoon.....

Depending on where exactly you hunt your going to be in some big timber country. Not knowing the area well you will prob have the best luck roaming clearcut's and edges of them.
Dont let the wolf talk bother you to much. I spend alot of time around there and have yet to see one, but have friends that have seen and killed some (2 killed this year). They are around more in that area than others but you will still be able to find deer pretty easy.

Well, I had a lot to say at first, but I realized most has been said already. You will have no problem finding areas to camp and hunt. It is all good, you just have to be hunting. Contrary to what many have said, I don't think you will not be more than an hour from civilization regardless of where you go, whether it Pierce, Elk River, or Orofino, and probably the closer you are to those towns the better it will be. Definitely get a wolf tag; quite possibly the highest density of wolves in the state.
