Hey all, I'm new to WA and the Tri-Cities. Wrapping up my resident hunting season in Idaho and looking for places to hunt around Tri-Cities. Everything seems to be private... How is the Yakima Rez for upland game? Was thinking about buying a permit next year and hunting it.
-
Upland game is pretty good on the rez...but why wait for next year?
-
non resident probably.
Best birding around I suppose

I am wrapping up work in Idaho and when I am down there its usually a week at a time, so I still hunt Idaho as my last year as a resident. Plus its probably not right having resident licenses in two states. :dunno:

You don't need to be a resident to hunt the reservation, you dont even need a WA state hunting license...they are a sovereign nation and have their own license. They have their own seasons and limits as well. WA state hunting license does you no good on the reservation, and vice versa, the reservation license means nothing off of the reservation.

Cool. I wasn't sure if it was a sovereign thing or a state wma type of thing.

GOOD POINT...... Does that apply to ducks as well?
-
I think you still need your federal duck stamp, their duck seasons are the same as the state, as well as limits.
-
You will still need a federal duck stamp to hunt waterfowl.

Welcome and best of luck and get some! Also just a minor spelling error its Yakama Nation, not bashingor anything just informing.

Different limits? On what? Pheasant and duck limits are that same as white man land. What else is there to hunt on the rez? And yes, you do need a duck stamp.
-
I didn't say they had different limits but that they set their own limits, which do match up with the WA state limits. No offense intended.
I usually spend my time chasing pheasant and quail, but lately I have found some pretty good areas for chukar and huns so I have been chasing them around.

Some of their upland seasons differ slightly from the state regs. All you need is a reservation permit to hunt upland birds down there. For waterfowl you will need a duck stamp also. And if you are planning on hunting the Toppenish Wildlife Refuge I believe you would need the State migratory bird validation as well because it is a federally managed unit.

Birds are good there, but watch for the trash. Not being racist in any way, it just is what it is. I looked the other way, because there were so many birds. Then my dog ended up with 7 stitches in his pad after he met up with some broken glass. Will I be back? Probably, but I'm covering his feet.

Hunted there on Saturday and was in a fire fight with quail. Best part...no one in sight!

I would like to hunt the Yakima Reservation, but I'm a little worried about reported garbage and dog injuries. Are there certain areas that are better to go to to keep your dog safe
-
It's not all areas. One area was really bad but had a ton of birds. Another was not so bad, but I didn't hit as many coveys. Generally the trash is centered around the entrances and immediately inside... You have to think, this person was too lazy to do the right thing, they probably weren't terribly motivated to pack or drive it in very far. Not all areas were as bad as the area where my dig got hurt.
-
Just need to go to the hardware store and buy a permit ($25 or $45 don't remember from last year). And they have maps where you can hunt. I got some birds up towards the foothills but just watch and drive around. It is fairly well marked mostly.
good luck

35 for the season. But most hunting ends December 31st.
