Title: Bear down in eastern washington
Post by: Missing on September 03, 2008, 09:06:13 PM
My son and I got this bear on Friday, his color goes from black to brown to blond. It is a very nice bear. his weight 160#s of hanging meat we believe he was about 280 live, this bear also had very few teeth left and almost no fat you could see his ribs through his fur. I don,t think he would have made it through the winter

Good job!

What caliber?

Shot placement?

Distance?

Called it in?  Glass and stalk?

Nice bear, congrats, are your weights estimates or from a calibrated scale?

Great bear.
If it was hanging withought the head/paws/hide you could add about 60 lbs then add 16% of that total for a fairly accurate live weight estimate.

Yes the hanging weight was on the butchers scale, I was always told that that hanging weight was about 50% of live weight. I wish I had a great story  but this is a little honey hole that we have we have shot several bears out of it, this was our fifth trip in to it with no luck. This morning we parked in the same spot and we had on of my sons friends with us that had never been hunting before so as we walked in to our spot I quietly told his friend how things worked and what he should do, as we got to the spot that we can glass this small basin I spotted this bear just below us normally we see them clear on the otherside but not today, I quietly pointed it out to my son, he laid down got a good rest, he fired and the bear rolled down the hill about 20 yards and piled up into a windfall. The shot was about 155 yards with a 300 Remington Ultra Mag. Before some of you ask why didn't you shoot we have a unwritten agreement that we trade off shooting and I shot last years bear. Between the two of us we have shot several bear the largest at just over six feet and 325 pounds and the one this year has by far the largest paws and head of them all, I can't wait to measure the skull. It took us just over 2 hour to drag it out to the truck, and by the way my sons friend is still walking around with a permanent smile on his face.

Last year we made no less than 12 trips into this area and never even saw a bear the year before we saw several bears here mostly sows and cubs, one morning we saw 2 different sows and cubs in there with in 2 hours.

Just an update on this story, I have Michelle doing the rug for me and she told me that the skull may make Boone and Crockett, I knew it was a big head but I didn't think it was that big.
