Young hunter bags big buck
By Sara Bruestle | Oct 24, 2012

Courtesy of: Bob Batie Tom Batie, 16, shot his first deer on Oct. 13, opening day of deer season.
At 16, Tom Batie already has quite the hunting story: The first deer he ever shot was a trophy buck.

Tom, of Mukilteo, shot a trophy buck on Oct. 13, opening day of deer season in Washington state. It was his first deer and only his second time hunting big game. He hit it at 175 yards.

The mule deer had a 30.25-inch spread. A spread of more than 30 inches between the tips of the antlers is considered a trophy.

Always fun shooting and big one your first time around.  Mine was a big 10 pt whitetail at age 12.  Way to go to this young man.

Sweet!  Do they really get 250lbs of meat from a 300lb buck???

The article says it was on private property near Vantage.

So I assume the Wahluke unit, since both Quilomene and Alkali are permit only.  :dunno:

I hear to often on here about the spread.  thirty inch bucks are nice but i have shot and guided lots of bucks between washington New Mexico and Colorado that dont come close to thirty and score much better than the ones that are thirty.  I took a 22" buck archery buck in washington that scored mid 180s. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder!!! :twocents:

I think it's nice to see a positive story in print.
Not too often these days that hunters and sportsmen in general are portrayed in a positive light.
Let's stay positive and not give the anti's any reason to tear this kid apart...

It is a positive story, it is just not accurate. I am tired of people bragging about bucks that have been illegally taken. If your gonna teach a kid to hunt, please follow the rules. It's not hard.

This buck was taken illegally. Yet his dad provided picture and false story to newspaper. His kid only tagged it. Their hunting partner shot two bucks

Kind of a serious allegation.  Is it being investigated?

I can't say I blame someone for NOT congratulating someone for a deer taken illegally, and then to top it off, they make up a story and put it in a newspaper.

That would be a new issue for another thread. There is no party hunting for deer currently. We must abide by our laws as they exist, not as we think they should.

Oh I agree.  Just think it is dumb because it was good shooting by the young man and quite a good story to be told around the camp fire too.  I am sure that this is going to open a whole can of worms for them now if it is true.
