Young hunter bags big buck
By Sara Bruestle | Oct 24, 2012
Courtesy of: Bob Batie Tom Batie, 16, shot his first deer on Oct. 13, opening day of deer season.
At 16, Tom Batie already has quite the hunting story: The first deer he ever shot was a trophy buck.
Tom, of Mukilteo, shot a trophy buck on Oct. 13, opening day of deer season in Washington state. It was his first deer and only his second time hunting big game. He hit it at 175 yards.
The mule deer had a 30.25-inch spread. A spread of more than 30 inches between the tips of the antlers is considered a trophy.

:yike: Dang....my first deer was a spike. :chuckle: That's awesome.
-
Always fun shooting and big one your first time around. Mine was a big 10 pt whitetail at age 12. Way to go to this young man.

Really?
So none of my deer are trophies. :'(

Atta boy! Very nice Buck!,,,,
-
Sweet! Do they really get 250lbs of meat from a 300lb buck???
-
The article says it was on private property near Vantage.
So I assume the Wahluke unit, since both Quilomene and Alkali are permit only. :dunno:
-
I hear to often on here about the spread. thirty inch bucks are nice but i have shot and guided lots of bucks between washington New Mexico and Colorado that dont come close to thirty and score much better than the ones that are thirty. I took a 22" buck archery buck in washington that scored mid 180s. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder!!! :twocents:
-
I don't think I'd get a euro mount on that big boy.
-
dam nice first buck id probably hang it up after shooting that my first year!! :dunno:
-
Anybody wanna hear the true story???
:bash:
-
I think it's nice to see a positive story in print.
Not too often these days that hunters and sportsmen in general are portrayed in a positive light.
Let's stay positive and not give the anti's any reason to tear this kid apart...

You mean, "nice buck, young man"?
Nice buck, young man. Way to go!

It is a positive story, it is just not accurate. I am tired of people bragging about bucks that have been illegally taken. If your gonna teach a kid to hunt, please follow the rules. It's not hard.
-
Good buck, a lot bigger than my first buck that's for sure :twocents:

What? :dunno: :dunno:
-
No. its a damn nice buck, sorry i forgot to mention that. point is someone can shoot a buck and can be a trophy even if its not 30".. Good job!
-
This buck was taken illegally. Yet his dad provided picture and false story to newspaper. His kid only tagged it. Their hunting partner shot two bucks
-
You have my attention
-
Mine too.
-
And my axe
-
If I read the article right, it says shot with a 22, anybody else get that?

No, it said the kid practiced with a 22.

Kind of a serious allegation. Is it being investigated?
-
Looks like it will be soon...
-
Investigated by the Judges, Jurors and exocutioners of HuntWA.
It seems so hard for everyone to just say congrats

I can't say I blame someone for NOT congratulating someone for a deer taken illegally, and then to top it off, they make up a story and put it in a newspaper.

If the info can be proven lets hear it............
-
spill it woody! Can't make an allegation like that without following it up.
-
Guy shoots 6x6 then sees this 4x4 and shoots it also. Kid tags 4x4. Dad puts pics and false story in newspaper.

You were there and saw it? Or heard the story about it?

Shooter told me and showed pics of both bucks laying side by side.

First one to call WDFW gets 10pts. Ready. Set. GO!

Would be legal if there is party hunting. Stupid rule :bash: :bash: :bdid:

That would be a new issue for another thread. There is no party hunting for deer currently. We must abide by our laws as they exist, not as we think they should.

That sounds crazy to put a story in the paper that is likely to be found out sooner or later :dunno:

Did you call it in?

Oh I agree. Just think it is dumb because it was good shooting by the young man and quite a good story to be told around the camp fire too. I am sure that this is going to open a whole can of worms for them now if it is true.
-
Wdfw enforcement was aware of it. As far as I know. No questions were asked
-
dandy buck :) I also love B.SU. shirt (My B.S.U shirt cost me 20,ooo.oo bucks)
-
:dunno: Near Vantage? I thought that was permit only :dunno: Something smells fishy :yike:

That's such bs. Is the shooter someone you know well? Why arent you pushing the issue to get your 10 points?
