Don't worry if you can't find a teammate. Last year I signed up as a "loose cannon" and got teamed up with EZJEEP. Had a blast!
-
ill be there! my teammate will be bringing his match grade 338 lapua! :chuckle: those coyotes are gonna have to run along ways to be safe!

Good luck finding a big enough piece of coyote to put the block into! :chuckle:

whats a high or winning daily count average, never participated in something like this before.

whats a high or winning daily count average, never participated in something like this before.
Last year two teams tied for 1st with 7 dogs a piece. It was blowing about 30mph and it was late in the season. This year we hope to see more dogs hauled in.
-
ya can win with 7....Hmmmmmmm, can whitman county kills be entered. :)
-
ya can win with 7....Hmmmmmmm, can whitman county kills be entered. :)
Dogs can be taken anywhere in Washington during the event. 7 kills was high last year because of the high wind.

This was not a true statement. Dogs can not be taken "anywhere" in this contest. This contest is limited to 5 counties in and around the tri-cities area., I will post the counties listed on our permit tonight.

Anyone looking for a partner fort this? PM me, would love to come over there, but would want to confirm a teammate first. Would be coming from the west side, so possibly with someone with a little local knowledge, maybe?

I want too to do this need a team mate. Am still kind of new at coyote hunting.
All you guys that don't have a teammate, don't be afraid to show up anyway. There will be other singles to team up with.
-
Sounds good Rick. I hope you know some areas around there. I am going to go over in December to deliver the blocks and some of the prizes. I will see what I can find out :dunno:
R
-
Heredogydoggy is right. If you do not have a team mate, we can hook you up with one there. We did this last year and it worked out pretty good, as long as there is not an odd number of singles.
Jerry, it would be great to see you there.

Having never been involved in a coyote contest, how do these things work? Do the team members have to find their own land to hunt? Seems like that would be a big advantage to the local hunters. I'm not complaining, we have a good chunk of land to hunt, just wondering.

Yes you hunt your own land but, in the counties listed there is thousands of acres of feel free to hunt land. On another note you have over a month to start knocking on doors and getting some land lined out. I would say if you are going to participate it may be a good idea to scout during December. Good luck.
-
Oh, ok. We have the land lined up to hunt. We are planning on entering, going to be tough for us though. Its a couple hour drive to our hunting spot and I won't be hunting Sunday. Just going to have to shoot enough Friday night and Saturday to make up for it. Where were the teams that tied for first last year from? What is the starting time?
-
Reason I ask about starting time is, it says hunting time from 5:00 Friday but it says registration from 5:30-8:00 Friday. So you start hunting before registering? Or do you register and soon as your done you can start hunting?
-
You can start as soon as you register. Registration is as posted.
R
-
Thanks Randy.
-
OK so to figure this out more. When you say you can start hunting as soon as you register how does that work?
Here is what I am asking.
If only one team member comes to check in and gets signed up at 5. Can the other team member not there start hunting at 5? Or do you have to be with your team member for the coyotes to count?
Reason I ask is that we are both 2hrs or so away. So can our team member start hunting without us with them?

Gotcha so my partner will have to wait for me to drive 2 hrs back home before we can start :chuckle: Then bug out 2 hrs early to get back to check in :chuckle:
So during the hunting time at no point your partner can hunt by them selves.

Same for me Matt, just have to work a little harder and kill a few more than the rest.

I know you are the other guy I was talking about :chuckle:

Yep, plus it might be a little hard to get a mouth block into the yotes mouth after two hours. Since the blocks are being distributed at sign in.
-
Lock jaw :chuckle:
-
Also, remember that if only one member of the team is present for registration (which is OK), they must have proof of the other team members wild ID number with them (photo copy of License). This is required for registration of both members.

Good! I hope the weather cooperates too. Coyoteshooter: come anyway--there is bound to be somebody that needs a partner there.
-
Yeah ur right but ill like to find one before that day
-
I would love to do the tourney to redeem myself from the performance that we put on a the Worlds a couple of weeks ago. I hate being the buzzkill, but how do you prevent cheating? How do you prevent teams from pooling kills. I would like to do it but have competed in tournaments before and hate spending the time and money on them when i have lost before i even get started. Winning aint everything, but it is funner to save the money and the hassel and just have a good day of hunting.

On signup, you will be given a set of wood blocks with zip-ties to put in the mouth of any coyote a team kills. Rigor sets in quickly, making getting a dog's mouth open hard. I guess there's no way to guarrantee 100% no cheating, but with no big prizes, I doubt anyone would want to..... :dunno:

I'll be there for sure anyone looking for partner p.m. me

We hand out mouth blocks that are numbered and assigned to each team. Last year the winning teams tied with 7 each not a unreasonable amount. I understand that just because cheating did not happen last year does not mean it can't happen this year. I think we go above and beyond to try and prevent cheating but, cheaters will always find a way. Hope you come the more honest people entering will hopefully drive away the cheaters.
-
cheaters are losers anyways hunting is not about winning any prizes it's about having fun and making memories
-
If I remember, last years winners won, by road hunting all night. :P
-
If I remember, last years winners won, by road hunting all night. :P
That is somewhat right I guess. They did drive the back roads using a siren locator to find them than called them in and spot lighted them. I think both teams with the 7 count used the same method.
The way the wind was blowing, I am surprised that even worked :yike:

Last year with 19 teams entered, we feel that there was no cheating done. We do go to extremes to TRY to minimize the possibility of cheating. As Heredoggygoggy says, there is no real huge prizes involved but big enough to make it worth the effort. The WDFW regulates the amount of prizes allowed to be distributed in cash and prizes. Our efforts is to organize a good time for sportsmen. Can we totally prevent cheating, I wish we could but . . . a true sportsman would not think of cheating.

Motel 6 in Pasco said we can get at 10% discout group rate if we reserve 3 or more rooms for the weekend of the Coyote Classic. It is right across the street from the RDO Equipment check in site. It is also right off the freeway so also close. Please post if you plan to stay there so we can register reservations under WPHA and all get the discount.

The last tourney i did (before the Worlds) was in Oregon and the rules were that if it was legal in Oregon it is legal for the tourney. The host said that he cant police every team and make sure that they were all on the up and up, so the only fair thing to do was to make it all ok for everyone. I didnt find this out until we got there and paid my fee. The winning team didnt kill a coyote on day one, then got all drunked up and drove around on a 20,000 acre ranch they had and shot them out of the window of the truck, and checked in with 15 on day two. Not a good feeling when you try to compete and really see how you stand up with others when it comes to coyote calling. I truely dont care about any prize at all, i would rather get nothing for winning and just have a good ol fun competition and see who is the best, and meet some good passionate people that really want to CALL COYOTES.
-
I am all for people taking coyotes in any way that is legal and not dangerous to people or property. But a competition is what it is and should be done with rules and should be done with the mindset that people are there to compete by calling them and nothing else. If not, what is the competition? Nothing wrong with road hunting if that is how you want to spend your day hunting yotes, but by no means should you think of yourself as a coyote hunter that won a competition under those terms. I just hope that the winners are guys or girls that truely followed the rules.
-
Furbearer , I think you are looking at this in the wrong way. If you like to just call yotes then that is good for you. This is a coyote contest. No where does it say it's just a calling contest. It is a coyote hunting contest and any legal methods are allowed. You are making it sound like the guys not calling them in are less then you. You may think that is so but this contest is not just a calling contest it is a coyote hunting contest in which all legal means are used.

• All coyotes presented for final check in must be called in and harvested by legal means. Coyotes turned in that are determined to be harvested in any way other than legal means will be disqualified and the team will be disqualified. No road kill or trapped animals allowed.

I might be out of bounds, but last I check. You are not suppose to shoot/hunt out of truck.
I have to agree with Furbearer. If this is a hunting contest, then road hunting and shooting out of a truck should not count. My, :twocents:
-
You are reading it wrong as well raul. Must be called in AND any legal means. So you guys are telling me that spot lighting is not a legal means? SO you are saying last years teams cheated to win? You guys are not on with your thought process right now.
What about disabled hunters shooting from a rig? Come on guys figure it out, it's not just a calling contest. OR: IT WOULD BE CALLED A CALLING CONTEST. Like I said no where does it say only called in coyotes count.
-
Maybe Randy can clear this up. I must be mis reading MUST BE CALLED IN, in the rules. I don't remember this rule last year. So after that contest, it seems this rule was put into effect.
-
You are missing part of it.
and harvested by legal means
-
I reread the rules and saw nowhere that the coyotes HAD to be called in. I would love it if any coyotes I get came in to my calling, but I'll take any I can get by any LEGAL means. I look at this contest as a way to have fun doing what I like best. Legally, that is.... :chuckle:
-
Rule #2 All forms of hunting MUST comply with the hunting regulations as set by The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. So if it isn't legal as per. the wdofw. Then your braking the laws and rules of this Hunt ! :twocents:
-
Yes, so if you are walking across a field and jump a coyote you can shoot it and have it count. They do not have to be called in to count. If you are spotlighting on private ground and shoot a coyote with a spotlight, as long as you don't shoot out of the rig "unless you have a permit to do so" IT'S LEGAL.
SO any legal means count not just calling.

I am with you on that! I will take a called yote or shined yote or any other "legal" yote that I can.

Again, waiting for Randy to chime in. If I'm reading to far into this, I'm sorry. How is "legal means", say its ok to shoot, or have a loaded firearm in a vehicle (road hunting)?? I understand the exception for disabled hunters.
I'm sure this will be cleared up. Hope to see you all there at the contest. This years is starting to look like its going to be a fun one.

-
Yes randy will clear this up but I AM postive that not only called coyotes will count. That is what the discussion is about.
No one said it was o.k to have a loaded gun or shoot from the rig. If people are driving private roads and shooting coyotes so be it. AS long as they are not shooting from a rig or having a loaded gun in the rig. Road hunting is not illegal. Shooting from a rig is and having a loaded firearm in the rig is. You can get out of a rig and shoot a coyote after you see one driving around. There is no law that says you cant road hunt :chuckle:
-

I am going to throw a twister in your statement. It is legal to have a handgun loaded is a motor vehicle if that person has a conceal carry permit with them, they just can not shoot from that vehicle. They can hunt with that handgun as long as it has a 4" in barrel length too.
-
Yes yes we all know that and that's not what we are talking about.
-
Ok...... The contest is you can shoot any coyotes by any legal means..... It was easier to say that then to list every illegal means of hunting. You can not road hunt as that is illegal, you can not use a dog as a decoy as that is illegal. You get the point. The only thing I see is there should be an or rather than a and in the following statement "• All coyotes presented for final check in must be called in and/orharvested by legal means. Coyotes turned in that are determined to be harvested in any way other than legal means will be disqualified and the team will be disqualified. No road kill or trapped animals allowed." I hope this clears it up.

Yep  "called in and/or harvested by legal means" Not just calling.
So hope for good roads and the goldendale boys will give it hell :chuckle:

Carpsniperg, i dont know how you got that i think i am better than everyone else just cause i was a litttle iffy on whether everyone would be on the up and up. I apologize if it came off that way but I read the rules that they all had to be called. That is totally fine that it is a body count and i even said in one of my post that i am all for road hunting and taking coyotes in any legal way if it is not causing danger to person or property. You might want to go back and read it. Im out for the tourney but hope you guys have a blast and cant wait to hear the results. take care

This is what myself were talking about:
"Nothing wrong with road hunting if that is how you want to spend your day hunting yotes, but by no means should you think of yourself as a coyote hunter that won a competition under those terms"
It made it sound like anyone who kills a coyote by other means is not a coyote hunter. I am a coyote hunter and just because I don't kill coyotes by only calling them in. Does not mean I am not a yote hunter who could win a contest. I have no problem with you but more then just myself thought your post to be putting others down. If you did not mean that I am sorry but that is how it was worded and came across.
-
The first half of that sentence that you did not highlite explains the group i am talking about, (ROADHUNTERS). Like was said before, road hunting is not legal and was commenting on those that actually road hunt. My whole point for chiming in on this thread was to see how they try to stop cheating, because it will happen, and was commenting on those that do. Shooting a coyote on the way into a stand is very much coyote hunting, spotting one in a field and getting out and getting in to position for a kill is very much coyote hunting. Driving around and shooting from the truck with spotlights to win a competition does not deserve bragging rights and a prize for winning a competition. I have been directing my words at the idea that some may cheat. If you shoot 15 coyotes walking to all your stands and never make a single call, by all means, collect your prize and brag. I dont know a ton of guys that are set up to hunt with spotlights outside of there vehicle. Most lights must be ran, or at least charged with a vehicle. Which will promote roadhunting. Just saying, sorrry again if it came off as being an ass. I was just saying that cheating will happen and it sucks to compete and have cheaters take home the win.
-
I don't see the difference between walking to a stand and spotting one of the truck. Seems like right place right time.

I see what you are saying. Just got our signals crossed.

Who is making the reservations at the Motel 6 in Pasco? Please put me down for a room. Anybody want to share it?

Yes randy will clear this up but I AM postive that not only called coyotes will count. That is what the discussion is about.
No one said it was o.k to have a loaded gun or shoot from the rig. If people are driving private roads and shooting coyotes so be it. AS long as they are not shooting from a rig or having a loaded gun in the rig. Road hunting is not illegal. Shooting from a rig is and having a loaded firearm in the rig is. You can get out of a rig and shoot a coyote after you see one driving around. There is no law that says you cant road hunt :chuckle:
Gee, we seem to be making a real issue of this. All methods of harvesting the coyote have to conform with the rules set by the WDFW. In the rules it references calling and legal means of harvesting. If you have a disabled hunter permit and have the paper work to prove it, it is than legal to abide by those guidelines,if you want to spotlight, so be it, if you want to call, so be it, as long as it is any LEGAL means.
This has (thanks to all the attention and bending) made for a rule clarification for future Classics should there be any. It takes things like this to point out the weak points of things so they can be fixed. Thanks for that part.
We intended to have a coyote hunting contest, share the outdoors with other sportsmen and women, enjoy a sport we all share interest in and have a good time. Please let us have that . . .
Sorry if we confused anybody . . .

Yep, gear is all been reorganized, labeled and repacked... Going out this weekend just to verify zero, make sure there isn't any last minute gear I need and I'll be ready to go. Hopefully my weapon mounted light gets here before this weekend so I can learn how best to use it, rather then learning on the fly in the field... Counting the days now....going to be a long fun weekend.

Yes that is my play for my day off today. Zeroed my new 22-250 yesterday. I might become my new favorite rifle. Nice to have something that groups well. This year I might try a few new areas I have scouted on Google Earth.

Yeah I zeroed my .25-06 on Sunday because I missed a coyote on Saturday night... My zero wasn't the issue, so it must have been operator error... Going to re-verify it again this weekend, just to be sure.
Love the .25-06 for coyotes, but it's not so good on pelts... But it groups well, and is nice and flat so the hold over isn't too dramatic.
Probably sent while sitting on the ferry... While using Tapatalk 2

motel 6 pasco offerred 10% discount if 3 or more WPHA member made weekend reservations 509 546-2010. Hear yah on the diabetes. I am up to 200 units long acting and about 30-40 units sliding scale. I am not fond of the oral diabetes medications a lot of side effects. going to sneek out tonight and try some bowhunting coyotes in private property. they are getting too bold for these people. they are seeing them all times of the day. they think there is 4-5 since they have seen different sized coyotes.
-
Yes put me on new pills. No fun when i change. Feeling way better Dieting too. Leave in three weeks for the Predatormaster's hunt in New Mexico. Want to look like a stud this year LOL. Rick
