Anybody have feedback on the touchscreen models? Easier to use than the toggle? Water issues? Looking at the 610. Thanks
-
I have the older model with the toggle and borrowed the touchscreen model from a buddy for our last hunt and I like the touchscreen version. Pretty easy to use and the screen seems easier to read.
-
This is all new to me but the wife says she would feel better if I had one. What is the difference between the 610 and 530hcx? The 530 is $200 more. I would figure a touch screen would cost more :dunno:
-
I am not sure exactly what all is different. I do know that having the mapping as well as the radio is pretty nice. I know it has helped get me back to the truck a few times!
-
the touch screen is nice but it is huge compared to the 530 i have both and the touch screen stays in the truck
-
The touch screen isn't bad but I would prefer a toggle sometimes if I'm using it to look around a bigger area. It's kind of a pain to pan with the maps having to slide it all around instead of the toggle but other than that I like it a lot. Not to mention the varying colors make it easier to see what that line means.
-
Where can I still find a 530 hxc I don't mind if it's used or not
-
I have the 655T - Love it! No issues.
-
No issues, Love my 650T!

-
I agree with Pianoman. I have the 655t and it is amazing.
-
I just got the 650 last week and played around with it for a few hours. Other than being very large, everything about it seems better than the 110 I was using before.
-
I have two 650s. It probably goes without saying that if you plan on just having one Rino in your hunting party then there are better options. The obvious selling point of Rinos is their ability to transmit voice and coordinates from one Rino unit to another.
I have had no quality issues with my 650s. The rechargeable battery pack they come with make them quite heavy: around 12 ounces. The touch screen is fine; not necessarily better than a toggle or keypad model, but not worse in any way. I've used it with gloves.
-
655 here and I love it. No problems but scrolling the maps would be easier with a toggle. These things are amazing and smarter than I. Still learning new stuff with it. 610 I think has less power/radio and battery life and less memory. Not sure if it takes sd cards. Oh and no camera which I am really starting to like having! I wish more of my group would get a rino radio at least!
-
Those are the big differences in the 610 vs the 650/655
lower range on the radio
no memory card ability
The 610 uses AA batteries, but the 650/655 can do that too if you order the battery adapter pack for it ($30)
-
We have two 655t's and bought a huntwa maps card for them online. This card shows us every boundary for DNR, State, Private (including the name of the owner), timber company, and all other chunks of land. It is a great tool for getting into areas that not everyone can see are public hunting.
-
You have a link for those maps? There are several options that show up in google.
-
they carry them at sportmans I know this

Lots of free maps. Save the file and upload it to the Basecamp Garmin program on your desktop and then they transfer to your GPS. I got the GMU boundaries program and it's excellent.

The alkaline battery pack through Garmin is 19.95.
Some of the other cool things are texting between 655s and the 5 MP camera that plots the picture on your GPS. You can pre-program short texts and just select and send them. You can also send the pictures. The 5 watt radio is awesome and you can also see other hunters by scanning the radio.
-
blacktailcrzy, or anyone else, I've a 530hcx that I've been considering selling. Great radio and I've been real happy with it. I even have it loaded up with the Hunting gps plat map, which I recommend for anyone. I'm interested in an upgrade to the touchscreen and interested in what others think of it. Sounds good so far.
-
Im not sure the upgrade is worth the money considering what the 530 already does. If you need these newer functions then sure. They are both good stuff. The Huntwa montana map is awesome and when this map is joined with birdseye sat image there is a huge advantage to a hunter. Be warned I like to scan radio and see what others are up too! :chuckle:
-
yup.. not much of a differance. touchscreen that is 2.6" vs 2.2" non-touch, camera, unit-to-unit transfer with a little more features and that about it that I see.
Don't worry, I like to scan as well. I also know when I allow someone to see where I'm at or not!
-
Problem with Rinos is you're the only one that ever has one - like me
wish I had half a dozen of them

I know what ya mean! I wish I had a spare sometimes. I dont know if you can hide/scramble radio on 655 rino like 530s. The memory on 655 is huge, I have so much sat. imagery on it already!

I ordered mine on flea bay
BTW, you guys that are wanting extra garmins, COSTCO sells a 2 pack of the basic garmin for relatively cheap (online)
-
So it sounds like I probably wouldn't be happy with a 610? I think the 655 is out of her list range. Anything else to consider?
-
Keep your eyes on cabelas sale. They had them 200$ off last month! That was a great deal. :bash:

I think what this is equals what you get on the hunting sd that goes directly in the rino, for about the same price. The sd card is around $20 a year for updates.

Early I posted that Costco had 2 packs for sale, and I meant 2 packs of the Rino 120 ($319.99)

Ya piano is right. There is a gmu overlay free. I have it. The wash topo is free and very good also. the sd hunt wa mont. maps later for 99$, I had to order it from cabelas because they cant keep it on stock. The gpsfiledepot free gmu overlay is handy but I wanted more like ownership for camp on state land and finding those little gems nobody hunts! Becarefull the cabelas also stock a mont.maphuntmap but is for wa. id. or. and doesnt display land ownership. Some buy this one accidently! OOPS. :chuckle:

I roll my own maps for GMUs, Deer and Elk areas, Bighorn Sheep areas , etc. If anyone understands what a .mp or .shp file is and can use them, PM me. I get my data each year from WDFW.

Bob you too smart for me! :dunno: I didnt see rino 650 on sportco website? Good unit though.

$389 MSRP is $499 and you can usually find them for $450. I just got mine from REI for $445, so it's getting returned.

You do know that REI members get a 10% dividend, so when you've returned it to REI and bought the other for $389 you'll only be a few dollars ahead.... :twocents:
(I also have an REI VISA card that gives another 5% on REI purchases, so I get a 15% dividend on them.)

Yeah, I guess that $15 I'd save isn't worth the gas to get there and driving in that area. Thanks.

I have the 655T - Love it! No issues.
So far less than impressed with mine....
Take WAY to long to recognize a "friend" that I can visibly see.....
Also very annoyed with the little beep that sounds off every time you key up.....
To pay that much and have a VERY poor quality 1:100 map is also a bit annoying.....
And its huge...
I think if my friends were able to use MGRS, and as knowledgable as I am on GPS use, i'd rather rock a quality two way, and a quality GPS..... Not a all in one.....

You may have an internal problem with yours. I'd consider sending it in. I've never had a GPS lock up so quickly in heavy cover/extreme weather. My friends show up instantly when they key their units. The 100K map is worthless. You need to subscribe for the 24K. $20 for all the maps you can upload in a year.
The radio is just as powerful as any other handheld I've used. Why carry two pieces of equipment?
-
You can turn off the key beeps. Setup > Tones > Key Beep > Off.
Did you mean GMRS and not MGRS? The 650 series can transmit on 5 watt GMRS.
-
:yeah: Yup. They are awesome!
-
Looks like the 530hxc is a discontinued item. So it's either the 610 or 650 :dunno:
-

The 610 is only a 1 watt radio and missing other functions like 3axis compass I think. 650 is the way to go. I just picked up 2 guys in Winston unit 8.5 miles away clear and had em located on my 655. Awesome.
-

Yes, although I am sure you can still buy them new from online vendors and maybe locally.. Ive had mine five or so years. I will upgrade maybe next year to the 655T.
-
I run the 655t and love it so far! It was my first upgrade since those old etrex's, and obviously a huge difference.
When I shed hunt I run a grid, which especially in the reprod/brush here on the west side can be tough to do without missing patches or doubling up on a section. When I do find something, or anything of interest for that matter like a rub, bedding area, wallow etc. I can take a picture with it and it gets tagged with coordinates and is loaded onto Garmin Basecamp when I upload my routes. Pretty neat!
Attached is an example. Sorry it's cropped so much, I didn't want to include too much in the picture that might give the location away.
-
Man thats cool. Shows what can be done with rinos! I see you have birdseye as well. Im still in awe of these things as I learn them.
-
Yeah, I haven't checked back to see if there are any more recent aerials of the areas I spend time in, but I know when I first put them on there I was a little disappointed with how old they were. Not ancient old, but things change fast in timber country as far as what's standing timber and what's clearcut!
Of course on the east side or in places where there isn't a whole lot of change, having satellite photos that are a few years old wouldn't be that big of a deal.
-
Ya my house photo was just updated! I think it has to do with sat. more then anything else? :dunno:
-
Yeah I think so. The more populated areas get updated more than typical hunting grounds, that's for sure!
-
Yeah I think so. The more populated areas get updated more than typical hunting grounds, that's for sure!
Yes that. My old house in Tacoma looked to be updated every 6 months or less, but my favorite campground out on the coast hasn't been updated in at least 3 years.

My 655T (I have the best one, by the way), doesn't navigate roads. Do I have to subscribe to another download to do that or is something else available for me?

+1 it's a LOT cheaper to use what you have than spend $80 on a chip

OK. The Rino and all other Garmin GPS units I've owned support MGRS.

Pretty standard....
My hunting partner (who happens to be one of the smartest dudes I know) cant seem to learn how to read/plot MGRS...
So we bought Rhinos....

Well, the wife ordered me the 650 for my birthday. Should be here in a few days. Just a heads up, they are about $100 less than Cabelas through pcnation with free 3 day shipping if anyone is interested.
-
So where do I start??? I registered the product, downloaded the newest software but how do I download the basemap and the 24k map?
-
The "basemap" should already be installed. Did you purchase additional maps, or was it advertised as coming with 24k topo maps as well? Most 650 models only come with a basemap.
-
oh ok, that's where the confusion came in. The manual made it sound like I had to download it. No, I have not purchased a map yet just an sd card. That's where I guess I'm still stuck at. Not sure what I should download or if I should just purchase a map card.
-
Like others I would highly recommend http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/washington-public-private-land-ownership-topo-gps-maps. (http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/washington-public-private-land-ownership-topo-gps-maps.)
It payed for it self the first time I used it to track down a property owner and got permission to hunt land Id been trying to figure out who owned for 3 years....
I also use it after late season to find travel routes and choke points in the snow, then take a pic (655t) to be able to relocate the spot before the snow flys the next year to set stands...
-
Hey thats a good idea! I didnt think like that but sweet. The pic geotag is really cool feature. Always learning new tricks. Agreed the huntwa map is a must!!! I love it. I pair it up with birdseye sat imagery and wow. I can find cuts trails chokes etc. easily and know whats ahead of me so I can aproach better understanding the terrain.
-
Is there a free map I can download for now?
