So many archers brag their craft is better, yet there are so many that leave wounded animals making true sportsmen like your dad choose to do the right thing or enjoy there hunt. He is a good man who made a choice that would be hard for me
-
I shot a buck in the Entiat in 04 that had a broadhead covered in scar tissue in his leg/ hip and he was movin just fine :dunno: Im just sayin, a wound to the leg is not to much for a wild critter to deal with. Maybe the leg was broke but even then, we saw the same doe 2 years in a row in Wyoming that only had 3 legs. They're pretty tough. They gotta be to live in the conditions they do!
-
Congrats to your dad on being such a great sportsman.  Just once I wish that some of these guys would get caught pulling that crap and get game wastage fines and get their licences taken away. Same as poaching IMHO.
-
Thanks for the update Shad. Nice buck and great thing your dad did. Every year since the archery has been going in the entiat after the season when the deer move to the orchard there is always a wounded buck or doe in there. Usually with the arrow sticking out of the back leg and they always end up dieing in the orchard. I hate it. Did you call and turn these guys in for slinging arrows and not following up??
-
PS we can hunt with crossbows in WA??
-
Don't put all the archery hunters in same class. There are rotten apples in every hunting category. That is a great thing you did. Nice buck as well.

Exactly, I have seen some pretty wild stuff during the modern firearm hunts.
Nothing wrong with that buck. I would take him...
-
Let us not go down that path bashing bowhunters. Nothing good will come of that converstion on either side. Congrats on a nice deer. Trophy tag or not.
-
Yeah some people have no control when they see a big buck and when they see those big bucks at 70 and 80 yrds they just have to let fly :bash: :bash: but they can hit baseballs at 100 yrds when target practicing :dunno:that happens alot over there when your hunting open country ... good job on your dads part

Dad has a disability permit. He has had both shoulders rebuilt and con not pull back a bow what so ever. He still enoys the archery hunt so they issued him his permit 2 years ago.
-
Turn them in. Gives everyone a bad name.

A genuine tip of the hat to your dad. And Nice Buck none the less.
-
Good job! Nice mass for a young buck. Good luck on the elk tags.
-
Hey great job to your dad. I would have done the same thing. Opening day in swakane I tryed to shoot a buck that was in the same situation. All hunters things happen. Good job!!!!! Another note!! Lots of clowns in the swakane this year. I don't know if its cause of the muti season tag people who shouldn't be there?
-
Neat stuff about what your Dad did. Sorry to hear about the negligent wankers.
-
Sweet buck! I love that camping spot.
-
I Jump on the computer to look at some great bucks and read this story about your dad on Thanksgiving Day !! He is a Patriot !! Not many folks like him around any more. Thank you.
-
Sorry to hear about the other hunters. Glad you still had fun and hats off to you dad for doing the right thing. I am sure it made the decision a little easier cause the mass on that deer. Still a stud buck for sure. Wish you luck on your elk hunt, can't wait to see pics and read the story.
-
Good on you guys, Decent buck as disappointed as you may be, also not just archery hunters that do not follow up.
-
That buck is more of a trophy than the big guy he was after considering what he did to put it out of it's misery. A true sportsman for sure. Give him our best and congratulations on being an ethical example to all hunters.
-
nice buck and good job.
-
Nice job. The Deer gods will smile.
-
Hats off to you and your dad for doing the right thing!! Sorry he did not get to finish his hunt with a buck that he really wanted. Hopefully he will be rewarded again next year for his good deeds. Still a great buck and should be very proud!!
-
That's a dandy buck anyway. I probably would have taken it even if it hadn't been hit by someone else. Good on your dad for being a sportsman.

that's awesome what your dad did! I commend you for not searching out those hunters (if you can call them that) :bash:
-
Hat's off to your dad for doing the right thing
-
Stand up guy...
-
Good on him for doing that.

First off all you did say archery was a joke ! I call bs , many hunters in all groups wound animals not just archers , I've seen plenty of guys wound game and not folow up . The thing is often a deer will make it from a arrow wound and been seen by others . If your dad waited so long for his tag and had expectations for a throphy and not been happy with that deer then maybe he should have passed or tried to find the guy that wounded it and put them on it . He did a humane thing for sure but , with tribal hunting way out of control and poaching running wild he shouldn't have felt that he had to harvest that animal.

?????????? Come on now.

I think the OP said Archery hunting was a joke in his area. Maybe it's popular and therefore attracts many hunters and therefore by percentage more bad hunters! He did say they caught the boys in the act so I think his feelings about their hunting ethics are well founded. I'll let him be the judge. None the less, please don't get too worked up about what he had to say. I know what it's like to find a wounded animal (this week!!!) and for whatever reason the arrow didn't connect, it can be very disappointing and emotional. It took me hours to get happy about taking down that wounded Doe earlier this week. Not because I didn't want her, but because I was bummed for her before I found her. Good job guys and I hope next years' hunt is more of what you're after. He's a great buck none the less, thanks for the great pictures and thank you for doing the right thing!

I am not sure why anyone could or would take a negative attitude to this post. No one has any reason to believe otherwise than his Dad spotted a wounded animal and chose to pursue it. Whether it would or would not have made it is an unknown.
I too gave up archery years ago because I had wounded an animal I couldn't recover and it made me sick. That was in the early 80's. I took up archery again in 2006 to get away from the crowds. Used properly it is a lethal as any other weapon known to mankind.
Wounding animals happens, period. It doesn't matter which weapon is used, it can and will happen. Read Bearpaws posts about his outfitting service, they are pro's and animals can and will be lost. I guess I don't understand why a guy's honor would be questioned or attacked for making this post on his adventure or hunt.
His Dad did the the honorable thing IMO. Maybe the guy's who wounded it didn't, who knows, we weren't there. If they did just fling arrows then shame on them. The only ones that know the truth is the person(s) behind the bow. My .02

Still a nice buck, good for him.

To those who don't follow up on a shot :mgun:
To those, like your dad, who saw a wounded animal and did the honorable thing -
We could :beatdeadhorse:, but as many have said, stuff happens. There could be a number of reasons why the initial shooters didn't folllow up, but I can't think of one. I mean, when an Archer releases, there is, no less than, $15.00 flying down range. At the very least, the shooter should want to recover the arrow. :dunno: I know I am no rich enough to not follow up to find the arrow.
Congratulations, to your dad, for making a great call. The good part is, there was nothing wrong with the meat and the rack will look nice on the wall.
Good Luck on you Elk Hunt.

Nice Muley...and with a crossbow at that...cool. Going to be some nice steaks there....
