I have a buddy looking for a Black lab Female for waterfowl under 1 1/2 years old.
Any ideas?
-
I know of a nice dog in Oregon. FT washout but, with a very good trainer. I think $3K. That is about the "low end" price for a good handling dog.
Lee Salmon has one or two but, I don't think they are handling yet. Just through FF and on pile work if I recall correctly.
-
3k is a little out of range. My buddy can train his own just not interested in the puppy stage. Basically just looking for a dog that will run out pick up a thrown bird. Maybe sit ,stay come and have drive to retrieve. maybe has had a few birds. They have had labs before so they can train it the rest of the way. they have a female now but she is getting on in years.
I dont know what they want to spend lets say under 1200 for giggles.

I've got an 18 month old chocolate female. Her dad is a hunter and her mom comes from Alaskan lines. I've not worked with her on birds, but she loves to carry things around in her mouth. I've got four girls her age and own her mom, so I'm looking to place her.

Try long hollow retrievers in E burg

How much are you wanting? Is she pure bred lab?
-
She's AKC registered and she's $500 to a pet/hunting home, or $800 with breeding rights.

Hey Worn can you send me a photo?
I will get it to my buddy.

I sent a couple pictures to your email. I know he wants black, but thought I'd offer what I have.

Just an FYI- A started dog at 1.5 years old has probably had about a minimum of 9 months of formal training. Usually, training runs about $600-1000 per month for clients.
Definition of a "started" dog varies trainer to trainer. Guys like Ryan at Longhollow might have a "started" dog for sale. This dog will be force fetched, forced to water and probably be handling at a Senior hunter level. (capable of reliability of whistle sits and hand signals at 200 yards easy) Most started dogs sell for anywhere between $3,000-5,000 depending upon the abilities, potential for advancement and specifically what the prospective owner is going to do with the dog. Duck clubs don't hesitate to spend $5K with trainers who they know produce good dogs. This sounds like a lot but, if you consider the cost of training a dog to that level, it's often a bargain. A started dog coming from a trainer like Ryan would be a cheap investment if you break down the cost.
I've been calling around for a started dog for a different friend- (Doug, if you're watching I called Joan today) Not much out there for started dogs or field trial washouts.
-
Well maybe started is the wrong word. Maybe JH Hunt one leg might be closer.
-
Call Clayton. He had a few dogs he'd been working that might fit that bill. He works re-habing rescues too- Probably in that price range or, let him know what the range is he'll probably work with it.

He had a litter of black dogs that should be in the age/price range you're seeking.

Lee Salmon has a few right now that probably fit that bill as well. I think two females and a male if I remember correctly.

It's best to call Lee. She's building a new house and Doesn't have Internet yet. Last I checked her website wasn't up to date, so call to see if she has any dogs on her site available.
-
I am online now. Still working on the house but I do have internet.
No started dogs available for that amount.
I do have some pups available though.

Happy Joan does has one started dog for sale he's 2 has his Junior Hunter title and has passed his first Senior test. He is a full brother to Hattie and Willie. We have hunted him quite a bit on upland as all the girls have come in season. She is planning on two litters in 6-8 weeks.

Talked to my buddy today. He has a line on a 6 year old Master Hunter Female. For next to nothing. In fact the guy is bringing the dog to hunt with my buddy next weekend. The guy says she will do anything you want from a retriever and has hunted out of boat a lot.
However her down side is she is aggressive to other dogs.
My buddy was talking to this guy about dog ladders and they got talking about dogs.
We will see.
If he decides to get her I will try to post a pic

Sent you an email on a possible 15 month black Lab female available.
-
Yeah that dog was gone.
Now he has a line in a dog that is in eastern Washington hunting and will be back in a week. He is going to look at that dog.
-
They lowered the price on that dog, so maybe the buyer backed out? I emailed them to see if they still have her.
-
Huh well he has A line on a dog from a guy who works at Cabelas. Guess it is in E. wash hunting now. But going to be back soon. Think it was a 2 year old.
We haven't talked this week because my wife has me on a short string with holiday stuff.
But I will try to get a update this weekend.

There are labs on Craigslist that are 7 months old. I know the breeding. It's an "English style" (I hate that term for whatever reason) So it will be short, blocky head and chubby. I've trained a few from the pedigree and they're pretty good bird dogs. They usually sell from $1,200-$1,700. (show dogs) The lady is desperate to get rid of them and I think she's down to $400.

Yeah I will passing on. I like the English. Both last dog had English lines. And my new pup too.

Well I talked to my buddy today. And he got a dog. Black male lab. Already trained a lot. Does triples, handles, and can work out of a boat also. He is real happy.
Thanks all for your help.
