Title: Who uses cots?
Post by: ShirtGuy77 on September 06, 2008, 10:40:41 AM
I first used a cot 3 years ago on our elk hunt, and I couldn't imagine hunting/camping again without one.  Unbelievable how much more comfortable it makes a hunt.  Heck, with that, wet wipes & GoldBond, I have no reason to head into town the entire hunt.

Anyone else a big believer in cots?

I use a (dorky) tentcot. I like it cause nothing is falling off the cot as I sleep, me, bag, whatever... due to the sides on it.... and I can hang stuff on it all day to dry out while I am out hunting. Bad point of this one, is that you cannot park your but on it as a tent couch...

Oops, almost forgot, its mouse proof...  :chuckle:

I couldn't imagine guiding 4-5 ten day hunts without a foamie or a cot.  Kind of like mountain house stuff. It will make a turd and give you nourishment, but it's nowhere as good as a real cooked meal. Thats the way I feel.

How about a cot with a BA aircore pad under your sleeping bag?

A cot with a 2" foam pad in a wall tent with the wood stove going...there isn't much better sleep

Beats the hell out of crawling up off the ground too, at 49, that ain't much fun anymore!

REI has a new wide cot that is form fitted to a body. I was checking them out last month at the Seattle store. This thing was comfortable, and each leg is height adjustable, the pillow keeper works great. Sure beats the cheapies we use.

I just bought one of the Cabela's army cots with cot tree and nightstand.  I love this cot.  folds up nice a compact in the carry case.  Its a bit on the heavy side but man is it durable.

I spent 18 dollars on my cot last year. I will not camp without it.....A LOT better sleep!

one of the only times i ever got cold was sleepin on a cot during an idaho elk hunt. never did it again. i use an air matress (first choice) or big agnes sleepin' pad. one good thing about the cots is you can store *censored* underneith em, and in a wall tent we all know how valuable every inch of space is!

Bad thing about a cot is that you get cold easier being up off the ground. If you keep the stove stoked they are great.

I put my Therma rest down on my cot first, then goes on the 2'' covered foam and then the canvas bed roll over my huge magnum 44.  When you are in the bush for 2 weeks it is nive to come back to a nice big bed!  I also use a fleece liner during the 1st week and then pull it out for the second week.  It keeps the stimk down a little.  By the end of two weeks in the  bush the bag is pretty foul so it goes straight to the dry cleaners.  I had the 2 bottle Zodi hot shower but it was broke straight out of the box. >:( :bash:  Now I am going to buy the 400x or what ever it is.  A shower would be nice!

I am a big believer in wool blankets...one underneath and one on top...although the one on top usually gets ditched in the middle of the night...

I just ordered that exact cot today, the Cabelas Outfitter XL they are onsale and you get the "night stand" with it for free. It has something like 600# capacity, I figure I could use it for a quad bridge if the need ever came up !!! and they are huge, like 85"x40" . Had one of those walmart squeeky $40 specials and woke up everyone in the campground every time I would roll over, it really sucked. Hope this new one is a bit quieter.  :chuckle:

We have always used cots. Used to have some real nice canvas army cots, but they where old and the rot finally got to them. I just picked up a Big Ol' Cot at Bi-mart last year. It was cheap and probably will only last a few more years, but I'll get my moneys worth. I put a sleeping pad for cushion and a wool blanket for insulation. I couldn't imagine camping with out one now.

Oh yea, you NEED to use a sleeping pad or several blankets between the cot and your bag, or the cold air will get you from below!  :yeah: In our camp we have been using the Cabelas army style cots for years-best night sleep  that you can have in a tent!

oh ya a cot is a must. I have a slumberjack from sportsmans and i love it. i thought about buying the big boy cot but it is a little large to fit in a wall tent filled up with dudes and gear. And yes if you dont have some kind of barrier between you and the cot you will freeze your ass.

I got two free cots with my Alaknak...never thought I'd own a cot, a tent like that or a wood stove. I think I'm going to like it.

I don't currently use a cot, but that is due to the size of tent, or lack there of, that I use.  My buddy and I use my backpacking tent, which is barely big enough for two guys and their gear.

Ahhhh......that brings back memories! Bad ones!  :chuckle:

Yukon mud, been there, done that. Actually some great memories and stories from those days..... Just make sure nobody starts asking for a massage or anything STRANGE......this is a bad sign.... Remember, you can always retreat to your car or truck!  :chuckle:

If you come to camp at my place that's all we have.Threw the beds out, they took up to much space.Looks like I'll be in this trailer one more year. I need a pad or my back hurts.
Talk about being cold sleep in back of a pick up or van without much padding under your sleeping bag. We have cheap cots from Bi-Mart that we like. The kids have their cots and don't take much room to store them when the kids aren't there
Ice Man you ever try it in a hammic   :bdid:

Well I just received the Cabelas outfitter XL today and HOLY CRAP !!! now I need a bigger tent, this thing is the size of a foot ball field  :o Oh well I should have no problem using every square inch of it LOL !!  :chuckle:  :chuckle: Can't wait to get out and use it. It came with a free night stand which is pretty cool to keep some of your stuff from getting scattered all over the floor of the tent.

Maybe I'll just set up one of my First Up canopies and put on the walls and lay down a tarp and call it home. anyone use one of those for a tent ??
