Title: My 1st Goose of the Season
Post by: bronczilla on November 26, 2012, 07:41:00 AM
I was nestled in the brush in front of my spread calling ducks and I hear geese comming from behind. I had no goose calls so I just kept myself concealed hoping they were comming within range. They looked like they wanted to land but after a few seconds it was clear they were heading further south so I decided to go for it. I had a dozen or so above me around 40+ yards, aimed for one (Not greedy) and unloaded all 3 shells. Of courese they kept flying, thinking I must have missed until I see one break off and coast into the field. I walked up on it and there it layed dead as a door nail. The pic is as I found it. Not used to seeing the white near the tail, no broken bones due to the soft landing. Thinking about having it mounted.

bronczilla,  I can't clearly see the bill, but unless the picture is deceiving, I think you might have a Cackler or Richardson there.  What size was the body on him?  John

I'm no goose expert but based on the pics I found on the net it tells me Cackler also but I could be wrong. Its not very big but not small either, 10+ lbs. I took it to a backyard taxi and he said its your average honker but like I said the white on the tail tells me its something else. I have it wrapped in the freezer until I can get some funds for a good taxi.

Not a cackler at 10+ lbs.

agreed... If you plan on duck hunting for a long time, there will be more geese in the shooting range... And they might be bigger... Eat it

yep cacklers are tiny 3-5 lbs, lessers medium size w/ short bill 5-8 lbs, with the giants being 10-15 lbs w/ long bill. Sometimes the giants and lessers will cross breed and you'll see a ten plus pounder with a short bill
