Title: Cabelas Lead Sled DFT
Post by: blacktailer on November 27, 2012, 08:51:18 PM: I got a flyer from Cabela's and they are running what appears to be a smoking deal on their Lead Sled DFT's for $99.99. I've been wanting to get one mainly to get my rifles better dialed in for some longer range shooting. Any pros or cons from anyone that has one? Thanks

Post by: Wacenturion on November 27, 2012, 09:57:32 PM: I've got the Lead Sled Plus (single frame). Have only used it to sight in muzzleloaders prior to a hunt, but works very well. Can't imagine the dual frame being anything but good. Great price.

Cons:

I find as a big guy, they are very hard to get into.. Come close to scoping myself several times..
More stuff to pack around when I go shooting

It will teach you absolutely nothing. In fact, using one will slow you learning how to shoot long range. With proper training you can get as steady behind the rifle with out the sled as anyone can with one.

I have used his many times and it works great. Like stated before its not really going to teach you much about shooting long range, but I think they are great for working up and testing new loads or sighting in rifles. Once you get your loads and rifle dialed in then you can ditch the sled and work on long range skills without it.

Post by: high country on November 28, 2012, 08:00:58 AM: Pay attention to Jim. If you shoot a light rifle from a sled and then from the prone.....don't be surprised if the poi is different. The way your rifle recoils has much to do with its accuracy and consistency.

Post by: Jim the Plumber on November 28, 2012, 09:21:43 AM: There are a slew of items that will be vastly more beneficial to you for that $100.00 than a sled. The $100.00 will be way better spent toward ammo, trigger time, optics upgrade, etc, etc, especially if you want to go long.
A rifle can be zeroed and loads worked up by using a good bi-pod and a rear bag, both of which you should use in the field for long range shooting anyway.

Hell I was using one today, I got the iron sights nuts on then used the sled to hold zero and ghetto "bore sighted" the prism sight to get me to paper. (AR15)

If shooting a bolt gun you can pull the bolt and bore sight down the tube and use the sled to hold your zero while you move the scope to zero. You do it on bags too, but the sled is nice.

first time I've really used a sled, and I liked it :tup:
I didn't pay anywhere near 100 bucks for it though :rolleyes:
