Title: Sore pads/feet on my dogs??
Post by: dbor on December 03, 2012, 08:52:31 PM
Had a couple of my hounds walking softly after a hard hunt... Talked to a Old Timer, he said, dip thier feet in Clorox. Have any of you used this for treatment? What would you use?

Thanks

tuff foot works ok, but is a mess to use, pad heal works great, and applies fairly easy. i found some horse hoof heal that had just about the same ingredents as pad heal, but came in a can x4 the size for the same price. it worked pretty well. or you can always try pine tar. it works great also. just make sure they dont lick alot of it off there pads.

i use tuff foot but its getting spendy... 12.00 a bottle. if you mix Iodine and alcohol 50/50 it works good.. buy it buy the gallon from a feed store and use it for a month befor you start hunting 3-4 times a week it will make your dogs much tuffer footed. good for preseason and good for if they blow a pad. i put it on after every time i run too.

Bag balm is for healing cut pads,it doesn't do anything for toughening them up,it actually softens.Bleach works for making them tough because it dries them out,There is a green horse hoof liquid for curing hoof rot and that toughens dog feet too smells like turpentine and has zinc in it,so does formaldehyde.

benbo30,
My dogs pads were not bleeding. I am not sure about getting into the meat of the pads with the bleach. This was some information I got from an old timer,(bleach). I have sense done a Google search on treating dog pads... There is allot of information on there. Hope this helps some.

Bag balm will soften the pads, are you sure this is what you want to do?

Gotcha.  It will do a good job of healing up the cuts.  If it's a really bad torn pad, give it time to heal.
