Always fun to look at the ones that slipped through....This could have been another nice deer taken this year I think.so where does it rate...one weak front and no super mass buck is my :twocents:
-
145 :dunno: (no clue really)
-
174
-
having no idea on how to score, but from all my other reading on the subject maybe 150-160.
-
I'm thinking about 153"
-
He bedded down 200 yards from where I was laying block .....sure hard to concentrate on work :chuckle:
-
I only took 8 or 9 pictures....hundred pictures I mean

this should about do it for this deer...love living in gods country where the mule deer frequent our lives.
-
He might crack 150 gross.
He could use some groceries in the mass department.
Nice buck!
-
Right at 150" I bet. He'll be a stud next year.
-
I'd call him a 150" buck. Might be a an inch or two either way, probably down. :twocents:
-
250ish
nice reindeer
-
Definitely under 150....perhaps 140-145
-
140-145 tops.. still a great looking animal.
-
148" this year, 165+ next with the winter you guys are having
-
145-150 :twocents: Great buck!
-
I love those last three shots in the sage. Great job!
-
Thanks everyone for your input....I am always curious to see what people think of deer on the hoof. Score isnt what its all about to me, but a good way to classify deer. I was thinking this deer was more in the 165 range. but I definitly not a expert scorer by anymeans. I just like to see nice 4 points roaming around after all the shooting is over with.
-
Looking at him on the hoof, I'd instantly think 150 class deer. No measuring tapes, just initial gut feeling. Neat photos of him

Yep!

I posted up how I saw it and came up with my score, this should give you a idea of where to start. Take my estimate lengths and add in where you think I missed it and it will give you your score.
What would need to be added to that base line of tines to reach that 165 range? Then look at those tines again and ask yourself if they actually could be the new lengths you come up with, that should make it pretty easy to help you. ;)

Sweet photo's! I hope he makes it, the indians can take him out at anytime- don't forget them.
-
I'd say he's 150-ish. Don't forget; for spread you measure the widest inside point between the main beams, not his widest spread. His widest spread is between his rear forks, but like Phool said, his main beam spread is probably only 18 or 19 inches wide. It makes him look bigger than he scores. :twocents: Gorgeous buck, cool pics
-
:chuckle: Well I dont feel shorted at all...I have never taken or scored a 150 buck. But after being 20 yards from this guy....whats the big deal with 185? :chuckle: I'd take a 150 buck....well one that was a nice 4x like this guy
-
That sure is a beautiful buck! Thanks for taking all those picture's and posting

I'm with you man. THe buck in my avatar has the same "problem" as this guy, narrow main beams that hurt his spread score, but I was thrilled to death with him... He barely grossed 160" green.

Not very good at this but I think you're about spot on except the spread... Inside spread I think is closer to 15-16... I'd say 140 tops... Great buck though...

I don't think he's that narrow. I'd still say 18 or 19" and he still looks like a 150 buck to me... :dunno: Look at him in the first picture. His beams go most of the way to his ear tips.

A buck that age will have ears at attention in the 17"-18" range, I went by picture # DSC-0225.
-
I think Phool is pretty darn close, except for the eyeguards maybe. Not sure that one will cut it, overall will probably be just short of 150 gross and will certainly net in the low mid 140s. Glad to see he is still out there. Not nearly as many survivors as I'd like to see.

okay so i have no idea what the formula is to come up with a score for a buck, can anybody break it down for me?
-
Phool pretty much did it :dunno:
as for guessing on the hoof I guess that just comes from and measuring a bunch of bones
-
im not talking on the hoof, i want to know how to actually take a tape measure to a rack and figure it out.
-
gotcha
well that takes a little more explainin'

explain away i hgave time

Heres a good place to start on how to score an animal.

Interesting thread. May be easier to compare the buck in question to a 150 type buck. For the sake of comparison here is an Okanogan buck I took with a muzzle loader in 1977. Didn't have him scored until 2000 or 2001. He scores....151 2/8
Another comparison between the buck in question and mine is inside spread. This buck has the distinction of having the smallest inside spread in The Longhunter Society Book (Muzzleloader Records) at 14 2/8
In comparison the phools numbers....
My numbers phools numbers
22 1/8 21 7/8 19 - 19
1 0/8 0 1 4/8 - 1 4/8
16 7/8 17 0/8 14 - 14
9 6/8 9 4/8 8 - 7
4 4/8 5 3/8 9 - 6
4 0/8 4 0/8 4 2/8 - 4 2/8
4 0/8 4 0/8 4 - 4
3 6/8 3 6/8 3 6/8 - 3 6/8
4 0/8 4 0/8 3 4/8 - 3 4/8

Thats a great buck centurion I would definitly be proud to hang that on my wall!, But to me I would l say the buck I photo'd would stretch 150 then if your buck is one fifty ..maybe I am just confused but if heigth is similiar and mass, I would say the one on the hoof with a hair more inside spread and a little better front forks would score better. :dunno: Not trying to beat a couple more inches out of a buck none of us are going to score for real. just my :twocents:
That buck really is only 14 inches inside wow. lol
-
I would go with 140 . . . . . . . . Grain Core-lokt

I don't think so Wilson, most of the score comes from the mains and backs where his buck is clearly bigger.
-
so the link i got to the scoring process sounds pretty complicated...... how about some estimates for this guy?
-
Nice buck, whitetail score completely different.
-
either use a pencil or make an imaginary line along the top edge of the main beam at the base of the points. Measure the points from there to the tip. Start on the outside of the mainbeam down at the burr and measure along it to the end (thats the mainbeam) its a bit more complicated than that but close enough. Then measure the narrowest mass between the eyeguard and the base and then the next point....so on for a total of four measurements. If you are lacking the alst point measure 50% of the way to the end of the point.....
Measure the inside of the mainbeam from the widest point, thats your inside spread... ADD EM UP. (Add 35% and you have your huntwa score) (that in paranthesis was a joke)
-

LMAO, that's some funny chit right there! :chuckle:
