OK, All the stories I hear of trail cameras being stolen, has got me wondering WHO is stealing all these cameras? I had one stolen, last January, it was cold and snow on the ground so I know a bear wasn't the culprit.
It seems with over 10,000 people on this site, odds would say that out of that many people we must have at least a few trail cam thieves among us.
So everyone who reads this, please answer the poll, yes or no. This is totally anonymous, nobody is going to know who answered yes.
Thanks.

I have never came across another persons camera out in the woods. I have had two stolen and one damaged beyond repair. The one that was damaged, after I ran across a shady guy in the same area this year, I'm wondering if I was getting dangerously close to a grow operation.
-
Mine was stolen this year right off a apple tree in the training areas of ft lewis i knew the spot was bad and it was only soposed to soak for a day or two but i got sent to califorinia for a month came back and my camera was gone
-
I've never seen another person's cam
-
No. I modified an old electrical disconnect box for a theft-proof camera box. But with the recent crappy performance and battery life of my camera, I'm tempted to shoot it myself!
-
yes. off my property. i left a note but they never called so i guess i stole it.
-
Maybe I should add another answer to the poll:
"No, but I would if given the opportunity."
Come to think of it, the only camera I have come across was locked up with a heavy duty cable, and not only that but it was in the bottom of a canyon where nobody in their right mind would go.
-
No. I never will either.
-
where nobody in their right mind would go.
I think that's the best insurance for not getting your camera screwed with. I got one picture of a hunter walking past my camera on the game trail, and I don't think he saw the camera.
-
I have only ever seen 1 other person's camera, and it was on private property...I didn't touch it, but there should be some funny pictures on it :chuckle:

I went to full draw on one and walked out around in front of it. Ran into the guy who owned it and we had a good laugh! :chuckle: And i did not shoot it!!! Incase someone is wondering.

Really? Why?
-
I have had one stolen, but have never taken one.
The closest that I have to that is I was taking a leak in the woods and noticed that there was a trail cam pointed at me, so I borrowed the card for the evening. I erased my peeing picture off of it and put a picture of a huge buck on it along with a bigfoot picture and a couple of African animals on it. I put the card back in his camera the following morning. I never disturbed any other pictures on his card. I hope the guy had a sense of humor. I was thinking that it might show up here.
-
:chuckle: that's funny woodman, guys checking his card, lets see ?....doe...doe..Sasquatch :yike:
-
GREAT THREAD BOBCAT, i wonder if any thieves on hear have the sack to fess up, i would never steal someones stuff, only thing worse than a thief is a friggin rapist child molester and a RAT, i gurantee there are some thieven jackwagons on here but they aint gonna fess up, friggin low lifes, they have the sack to steal your stuff but they aint got the sack to tell you they stole it.....who the hell else is gonna steal a trail camera if not a hunter....the hunters that do steal are just thinkn "oh sweet, i will go put this in my area that i want to hunt" and then when their stolen cam gets stolen they probably bitch about it. :bash: :bash: thieves, i say KILLEM ALL......
-
Does walking out of Cabelas with 4 in my pocket count? Just kidding.
Maybe a lot of them are stolen by non-hunters. :dunno: I don't know of any hunters who would do this, I don't think.
-
Had one cam stolen and two empty lock boxes stolen, and an sd card out of one :bash:. Would love to catch the dirt bags and let them feel the wrath of my rubber blunts. :chuckle:
P.S. I would never steal anything from anyone.
-
Stolen one? Hell, I've never even seen one. :chuckle:
I guess it pretty hard to secure a game camera in sage or bitterbrush.
-
ONE OF YOUR CHOICES SHOULD BE "HELL NO"!!!! I can't remember ever seeing one in the woods
-
I STEAL EVERY TRAIL CAM I CAN GET MY HANDS ON.... HAVE ABOUT 200 AT HOME. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I have acquired 3 or 4 while walking through the woods. I take everyone one i see because im afraid that the alkaline batteries used will pollute ground water and ruin fish and wildlife habitat if left out for to long. I dont condone stealing but littering is just as bad. :twocents:
-
I STEAL EVERY TRAIL CAM I CAN GET MY HANDS ON.... HAVE ABOUT 200 AT HOME. :chuckle: :chuckle:
And tree stands, they are just left in the woods so finders keepers...
-
They are never stolen, just relocated. Good scavenger hunts are always fun! :chuckle:
-
I am on board with all the others, I have never seen one out in the field ever! Of course it's the las thing that I am really looking for, horns on a tree I guess. LOL
-
I've never seen another person's cam
:yeah:, and no I would never...I don't want people steeling my cams
-
I really don't like the idea of them. Kind of feel violated for some reason if I were to be photographed out in the woods slipping along some trail.
I don't like the damge I find from salt and crap left.
Its almost a form of littering to me.
all that being said, no I wouldn't bother other folks property eventhough its on PUBLIC land
-
holy crap someone fessed up, what in the hell.........whoever was the theif that fessed up, how do you feel after you steal somethn that didnt belong to you? how do you sleep at night? is this somethn you are gonna teach your kids?
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: No, I would never mess with someones property on public land! Is this a joke? Somebody actually confessed :yike:
-
I've never seen another person's cam
Or even thought about looking for one.......WTF would I want with someone else's cam???? Hell my dad had a whole hunting cabin "borrowed" YEARS ago up on Nanuem ridge, by some opportunistic logging hands working down the road.
When me and my teenage buddies found it we helped ourselves to a few of the Raniers they left inside while they were gone for the weekend. We were on a survielance mission.....
-

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: PICK ME!!! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Absolutely not, I wouldn't even consider it.
-
i think people need to start putting sturdy locking cables on their cameras. 20 dollars to prevent the loss of a 100 - 200 dollar camera is worth it is it not? that being said, if i ever come across a camera in the woods, i will not steal it, however when the person pulls their card they should be prepared for some x rated pictures
-
I've came across 3 in my day and normally give them the thumbs up and then the full moon :chuckle: :chuckle:
Bad karma and infinite curses to those that steal!
-
yes. off my property. i left a note but they never called so i guess i stole it.
I had this happen, found two of them on my private (posted) property... Left a note and the guy actually called to the days later, not only did be get his cameras back, he got officially trespassed by a sheriff's deputy... Deputy didn't think the guy would show us, but sure enough he did... Wasn't too happy I took down his cameras and wiped the memory cards... Deputy reminded him he was lucky they didn't just disappear and then told him to be on his way.
I can't say in would ever touch a trail cam that wasn't mine and on publicly accessible land.
Probably sent while sitting on the ferry... While using Tapatalk 2
-
If I ever saw someones cam I would most definitely Full Moon him :chuckle:
-
I have posed for cameras and will again in a heartbeat.....
I would and do endose the taking of those you find on YOUR property that were not placed by you.
I would never take/damage one that is not mine on public property.
-
Definitely not. I've had one stolen and know what it feels like though. >:(
-

This reminds me of a fella 20 years ago when I worked in retail. He was carrying his very young daughter through the store when right in front of me she said, "Steal something Daddy, steal something". He looked me right in the eye, smiled real big and replied, "not now honey, people are watching".
That little girl probably has a couple of pure bred thievin up and comers by now.
-
I've never stole one but a buddy and I have turned them around on the trees before. So they point at a tree a foot away.flipped them over so all the photos are upside down. He did hang one of mine in his barn corral once I got a ton of cattle pics. few cheekens.
-
I am the one person who voted no and would given the oppurtunity
The reason why is if it was my camera that was originally stolen I would want it back. Also would steal one if they put it right over my camera or salt lick. I would only steal the memory card and would replace it with a new one ;).
Then that wouldn't be stealing :dunno: that would be retrieving your property...
-
I've taken the SD card out, wiped out my pic and returned... I've set trail cams out plenty of times but each time, i'm fully aware that this may be the last time i see it. A local farmer i know found a game cam on his property last year, he smashed it up with a stick and left it. The camera owner found it and confronted the land owner and wanted to be reimburssed for his loss. The land owner told him where to shove it. So the camera owner takes it to small claims court and the land owner was forced to pay the damages even know this guy didnt have permission to put his camera on the property.

:chuckle: :chuckle: yeah I was surprised when I heard that. I couldn't believe he took it to small claims court. Although one thing he might have had going for him is that the local land owner only leases that piece. He doesn't own it. But I really don't know how those laws work. I heard the land owner thought it was a WDFW camera... :chuckle:

my thought exactly when I read the thread title :chuckle:

I just stole one tonight! Off eBay!
Got a Moultrie D55 for $45, free shipping. :IBCOOL:
-
I think a poll should be started for if you have had a camera stolen from you
-
I think a poll should be started for if you have had a camera stolen from you
I believe there already is one.
-
Hunterman(Tony), What do you mean by 'checked your zero on a few'...? I hope you're not that kind of guy... that's no bueno... public or private, that's still not cool...
I've had my pic taken by several over the years. I would never touch, mess with, move, damage, or destroy someone else's camera on public lands. If encountered on your private property, removing and leaving a note seems appropriate, follow up with local LEO's if you wish, but to destroy... not cool...
I don't advocate tresspassing, but say your car breaks down and you leave it in a pull out alongside the road... maybe that pull out happens to be private property... you might expect your vehicle be ticketed and towed to a local impound... but crushed and left for you to collect... you'd be pissed and likely win your claim...
-
With almost no one admitting to taking game cameras, makes me wonder if a lot of cams are stolen by PETA type people........ :dunno:
-
Have no need to steal any. Back when the camera builds were going on I built a dozen of them not counting my production ones.
-

Yes that would be funny but this one is brand new, in the package.
-
yes after it hung on the same tree for over two years with dead batterys.. Thier tree stand also hung there for two years with no activity.. Wonder if the person died or something.. No adress or id on either of the items.. But i wouldnt call it stealing after that long and if anyone can tell me where and what kinda equeptment it was i would give it back to them..
-
Never stolen one, never will.
I have had 3 stolen off high traffic public property in the last 3 years.
-
i have never even seen one in the woods lol
-
A buddy has his taken by a USFS seasonal employee. They thinned an area and the tree his camera had been on was cut. He went to the USFS office and asked the District Ranger about his camera. A week later he got a call and the camera back. The USFS seasonal employee gave him a hard time and told him it had been illegally placed... which it hadn't. He got the camera back, but the SD card was gone... That's pretty much the only recovered camera I've ever heard of.
-
Dang y'all ease up I was only joking..
Hell I've never seen one in the wood.. Of cource I'm not looking for my animals aginst a tree either
Hunterman(Tony)
-
I've never seen one. Would never take one. Its to thick in the woods where I live. I found a fishing pole on the middle of the rode a few days ago. Looks like it belonged to a kid. Maybe I can figure out whose it is. I'd rather give it back and make someones day than keep it.
-
I just like finding a trail cam and walking by like Elmer fud a few times.... Find the rabbits....
-
to those who have stolen or would steal someone elses stuff, may the hunting gods and O'RION give you a V.D that make your pecker fall off, i pray for your thieven butts to fall down and snap your femur when your out in the deepest darkest part of the forest, GOD BLESS......
-
Maybe this was already brought up :dunno: what if you found one on your own private property that wasn't yours and you took it would that be stealing?
-
Nope.......your property....your cam....IMO if someone is dumb/reckless enough to trespass and hang one they are SOL.
-
I only seem to find stangs cameras in the woods. I could have stolen 3 of his now.
-
We found one put up by some Total greenhorn right on an old overgrown road 5 min walk from the main road in a secret honey hole close to Maple Vally, pretty sure this newbie had followed me in just days Pryor. Wiped his SD card clean and gave him the bird and maybe Bare assed him??? Then left the camera off as a lesson. 2010
Always curious if he was on this site?
-
Not sure why you would do that. :dunno:
-
Not sure why you would do that. :dunno:
Why! Cause he was an idiot to strap his camera to a sapling growing right in the middle a well traveled trail!!!
That camera would be guaranteed stolen in a week. It was a little humorous wake up call.

if it was going to be stolen then that should be his wake up call. How would you feel if someone messed with your vehicle while it was parked at a gate "cause any idiot should know not to park at that gate" would you think it was a great lesson or some jackwagon messing with your stuff?
-
That's not a practical joke. That's messing with other people's gear. If it's not yours you should leave it alone.
-

Dude lighten up!
I didn't take it end of story
-
Should have done the "Elmer Fudd Walk" past the camera about 50 times. That would have been a fun way to get him to "get the picture". :chuckle: :chuckle:

Believe me, this camera would have only caught day hikers farm dogs me my buddy other hunters mushroom picker a Cow pig ect ect! It was Smack dab in the trail, not even in the woods or hunting area yet.
I would do it again, in fact we took some time figuring out what/how we were gonna mess with it!
-

Even though I may fall into the self righteous classification, I agree 100 with grundy on this. I guess it's okay to physically mess with someone's equipment, but not okay for me to park on a public road and glass animals.

Take $300 TV and strap it to a tree on a public trail see what happens?
Or a Laptop
3 $100 bills
Hand gun
Your GPS
Anything of value! Do you really think its going to be there in a week or two? Really?! You are a FOOL
Get off your Lazy ass and go hide it in the woods, canyon somewhere but don't put it 5 min away from the Parking lot where Everybody walks!

That's not the point! Just because some one hangs something of value in a noticeable place does NOT make it OK to mess with it. This world would be a better place if people didn't think like you. You should be able to trust people and you shouldn't have to worry about people messing with or stealing your gear. It's people like you that are ruining this country.

I don't know which is more disheartening here,
1) The fact that someone would intentionally do this, or
2) They would then try to defend their actions using the logic expressed here
Sad.

I hear that alot. There are lots of good folks on here too. I didn't post my hunt on here this year as I figured I would have to deal with crap or I didn't want to contribute to the crap by my negativity of the adventure, I was pleasantly surprised of the support actually.
-
And all this time I thought you guys had the same bad luck I've been having over the years :chuckle:

Your not going to get any support from me Bone!!! I look forward to reading about your adventures every year. You seem to be able to document (photographically) your hunts unlike most and they are always an interesting read.
Just giving you a hard time. I, like most, would obviously love to see the pics and hear the story but understand the hesitation. Any chance you will post up some pics without a story? maybe just in the 2012 bucks thread.

Thread jacked.....story or lack there of is in the Manson buck thread and when I get a pic of the thing I'll post it.
back to topic. We all have to learn that what we post is going to be seen by thousands and evaluated by thousands just like yourself. Wrong, right, good or bad. We have to learn that now. Welcome to the age of the internet. I can understand if its too much pressure to post. Opinions are plentiful. If you want to have one and share it, you get the priviledge of allowing someone else the same and it might be different than yours. A campfire of 10 has been extended to a fire of 10,000. Since my fire usually has 1 by it, I understand more than you guys might think I do. HOWEVER, there are more than 10,000 authors with stories an photos to "this magazine" and its mostly ALL LOCAL.

And yes I do admit I got hot when this random nobody attacked my story! And in real life it probably never would have happened.

I have never stolen any. I do have an entire collection that was left on public lands which makes them fair game.
:chuckle:
Come on guys, you need to write the question so you can flush out the guys that "don't consider it theft" when taking something from public land. We know there are guys on here that admitted to it in the past. You know they "steal".

BK, you are not the only one noticing this.. I know several old timers like us on the forum that refuse to post pics and stories anymore.... to many D!@k measuring arguements about measurements, orange, what unit, etc.... So I have to say I agree with you on this statement 100% .... This forum is NO WHERE NEAR the great place it was when we joined..... But that is to be expected unfortunately, when you go from 1500 members to over 12,000... You lose all that informal family atmosphere, and camaraderie.

I would have pointed out that it could have been some 85 year old man and thats as far as he could get out, it could have been some vet that lost a leg or eye or was on crutches from an injury at war, or it could have been someone that knew that was actually one hell of a deer crossing like the one on Blewtt pass by scotch creek that sees several 180+ bucks walk across the hiway in the same spot every year. It might have been better recieved in person by the fire than on here. :)

Thanks Hunt bear and Bone, I'll try and curtail my comments to only the most angelic of selfless acts for our demigod friends on here.
-
I hear that alot. There are lots of good folks on here too. I didn't post my hunt on here this year as I figured I would have to deal with crap or I didn't want to contribute to the crap by my negativity of the adventure, I was pleasantly surprised of the support actually.
Yea I would like to see it too Bone so I can determine where it is drive to the exact spot and wait for another deer to come out as they ALWAYS travel in the same area year after year!! :chuckle:

We found one put up by some Total greenhorn right on an old overgrown road 5 min walk from the main road in a secret honey hole close to Maple Vally, pretty sure this newbie had followed me in just days Pryor. Wiped his SD card clean and gave him the bird and maybe Bare assed him??? Then left the camera off as a lesson. 2010
Always curious if he was on this site?
a lesson on what? Being an azzhat? Why would you screw with someone else's gear? How is turning it off going go teach him anymore then seeing your picture on his camera. Complete *censored* move...
:yeah:

I'm sorry that I think messing with someone else's stuff is wrong. If that makes me a demigod, internet do gooder, internet cop, etc. Then so be it. If you think that then I would hate to see who you consider a normal guy. I guess I was just raised different. I don't think I would want to share a campfire with someone I couldn't trust alone with my stuff....

Trust is the biggest factor in my opinion

I hate that I feel compelled to even respond to you once again, but quite honestly I'd rather talk to you face to face! We're both Westsiders, why not meet up with me today after work and I'll take you to this Very same spot and show you exactly the scenario.
Perhaps a little reality check would do you some good instead of sitting they're judging me.
Seriously lets go. Tomorrow you can jump back on here and say " hey I was wrong and kinda a pompous prick and Dave's a good guy and WOW who would have put there camera there???
-
Doesn't matter who put a camera where......they certainly don't deserve to listen to you!!!!!
Am I the only one tired of BK Dave and his desire to refer to people in such poor terms?

It doesn't matter where this person placed THEIR camera you SHOULD be able to put a camera in the middle of a parking lot and not have to worry about it. Guys like you are the reason I can't. I won't take you up on your offer because frankly I want nothing to do with you. You are very rude and inconsiderate of others. I highly doubt I would think you're a good guy.

I once found myself looking into a camera that was not mine and didnt feel like being on it. I was on public land but still just didnt want to be on the camera. I pulled the SD card put it in my digital camera found my picture and deleted it. Then placed it back in the camera and moved on.
Hind sight probly not the best thing to do but i did it and cant change it. I have since found myself looking into many other cameras. I just make sure to know leave them with some real "Quality" photos. Not lude just funny. Like sticks on my head and stuff like that.
-
I think I've beat this dead horse enough. I'm pretty sure everyone knows how I feel about this subject. :chuckle: :chuckle: :beatdeadhorse:

Cory deleted one picture (of himself) and did not additionally tamper with the persons camera.
Wiped his SD card clean and gave him the bird and maybe Bare assed him??? Then left the camera off as a lesson.
You cleared his entire card, bare assed him, flipped him off, took his camera down and left it on the ground as a "lesson." pretty sure we are talking about 2 different scenarios here. The camera Cory deleted the photo of the owner doesn't know the wiser. You (BK) do nothing but come across as (keeping it HW friendly) a very unkind and mean person who finds joy in tampering with other peoples property.

So I just got home and read this entire thread. (I hadn't earlier today)
Much To my surprise there are muilitible posts about people messing with cameras on here and even 2 people claiming to have stolen them?? And none of these posts rilled Grundy 53?!
Only My post did an he attacked instantly Leading me to believe it Was his camera I messed with? Idk just seems awful
Edited for profanity. Read the rules!!
I even offered to meet you and show you this location of said camera. you shied away?
TRUST? That's funny I'm pretty sure I was 100% honest with what I did! When I did it and How! And at the end of the day there was no harm no foul! camera was left were it was found now wasn't it
Bottom line, I messed with an ill placed camera It was a practical Joke at best!
I'm done talking about this and I really have to question wether or not I want to belong on a website with so many people like Grundy53
There are some great guys on here but the majority seem to be self riotous judgmental Jerks only looking for the mistakes in others and focusing on negativity. This site used to be fun and folks could come home jump on line and say Anything! Now it's so Damn PC ya can't share a damn single thing with out a Pack of wolves ready to pounce and tear ya apart should there be One tiny little imperfection, or deference of opinion.
And I swear to God I've Never met such a large group of perfect Angeles who have never missed, messed up, got lost, forgot they're tags, tagged an Ear or antler, gut shot, lost and animal, shot the wrong animal, shot after dark, shot over a fence, didn't notch they're tag, Had a beer in the console, trespassed, hunted high, removed plugs from gun, road hunted, used a Quad or shot under 100yrds saw Sasquatch, shot Sasquatch!!!
It's kinda Sad
-
I can assure you it wasn't my camera. Great theory though .

Weren't you just recently excoriating others for road hunting?

I used to use an old steel power meter box with a cable running through the back, which I would lock on the inside then lock the outside, as well as lag bolt from the box into the tree. Go figure it was my first camera stolen! Guys went in, found it, then came back with bolt cutters and cut it off the tree. Wanna know how I know that? My uncle overheard the guys at the bar bragging that they stole a camera (right where he knew mine was taken). Well he and some friends confronted the guy, and got the camera back for me. Only bad part was it was beat to hell and the memory card and batteries were gone... I was pissed until I found out several months later that the guy was arrested for poaching several elk.
It's guys like this that make me want to set big steel jaw traps right under all my cameras!!
-
no place for thieves in the hunting world
-
I just stole one tonight! Off eBay!
Got a Moultrie D55 for $45, free shipping. :IBCOOL:
It would be funny if It already had pics on it and the chain it came with was obviously cut. :o :chuckle:
i had a 55 stolen from me this year
Yes that would be funny but this one is brand new, in the package.

I've seen a few cameras... Two were right between a favorite spot for wandering BT from one food/bedding area to another.. The day we found them Dad and I made it very clear this wasn't a secret spot in a fun way... Figured the pics would've made it on here by now but no dice... If you can picture two guys.. Farther and son... Sitting in front of two different cams going back and forth arguing and pointing at the cam while smoking cigs and waving our guns around... I even took my shirt off, tied it around my head and ran by both while Dad slowly crept along with gun at the ready... Bet we killed those batteries!! :chuckle: Never saw them around there again.. :dunno:

i like the idea of settn big traps for would be camera thieves, but i like the idea of a grenade on a trip wire so when the camera is removed it blows their arm off, it would be easy to pic out the camera thieves then :chuckle: my luck though i would blow up a stud blacktail or a bear :(
-
I have only ever seen one cam in the woods. I had one stolen from me years ago. I would never steal a camera. Not because I'm awesome, I just wouldn't and I HATE thieves. Like in a way I can't even begin to describe!
I thought at one time I would check the card but don't think I would even do that now because it would do me no good. If I saw a giant animal on the camera it would only discourage me. I don't want to hunt an animal somone else is hunting if at all possible. I don't really even want to see another rig where I am hunting.
I'm sure every one of you has already thought of this but... I always thought it would be super funny to try to get a Sasquwatch fever started by making a suit and getting on a camera somewhere. Mybe not but if the pic were taken in the right area and it was just convincing enough I think it would take hold and start a buzz. Sasquwatch stuff cracks me up!
-
There was a post on here a while back where a guy took the card out of a camera that his buddy had set out and he photoshopped in a bunch of pics. Pretty funny stuff. You could photoshop in a bigfoot.......... :chuckle:

I might make that my life's mission.

If you are admitting to doing any/all of those... you sir are a classless, garbage, piece of trash. I hope you get caught. Is that how you hunt? And finally, how dare you shoot bigfoot!
