It looks like I might draw a combo tag,I am 24 on the alternates list!My question is there anyone that is going to Montana on a combo hunt or just for deer that has room for 1 more person?I would like to go but gas prices and I work at Boeing and need to save money while on strike,so can't really afford to go it alone! Thanks
-
I am going over the 25th of oct to the 2nd of nov. Unit 292 mulie buck and cow or branched antler bull tags. Im flying solo(pops may come along.... someone needs to cook) and might be interested. pm me if you want to talk.
-
I was 381 on the alternate list. I got the mail today and had a application from Montana that said my number was up and I could buy the big game combo if I wanted.
To bad I spent the refund on a Montana antelope tag and plane ticket to Montana.
So I'm not buying the Big game combo but I leave Oct 16th to hunt Antelope.
-
Well I got my tags, now I just need someone to go with!
-

We are going straight to missoula , then :dunno: not sure yet , have acouple options for elk . We are going to wait for a couple of reports and then over to broudus for deer . How bout you were you headed ?
-
We will be south of Broadus.
-
Maybe we ll see ya on the road . Are you stopping anywhere FREDS :chuckle:
-
Actually we have not decided yet, we generally make it to Butte and stay the night. What are your plans, maybe we could meet for a beer?
-
FREDS Club has been a regular stop for our crew for years. :rockin:
-
It depends if we end up going for elk down south first . When i figure it out ill PM you . A beer sounds good although i fell like i already know you from your moose thread . By the way hang in there you ll get em . When are you goin 300 ?
-
We are going the last two weeks.
-
Hey phool , you goin for elk too or just deer
-
heading over for deer first, we have antelope tags as well and if time permits we will go look for elk. I will more than likely still have a Washington moose tag as well so I can't spend too much time over there. Here is a sunrise where we hunt deer, man I can't wait.
-
Wow,
That is a great sunset huntinphool!!! My brother and I are heading over on the 15th of November with three 12 and 13 year old kids! We all have combo tags! I do not think anyone wants to ride with us.... My two are girls and I am sure there will be a lot of jabbering and giggling and high pitched voices!!!
Anyone care to throw us a bone on where we might find some spot and stalk country where we might find some animals for the kids. We are not looking for monsters just good country with respectable deer or elk numbers. I have hunted Montana quite a bit but it was always with a bow for elk and in thick backcountry type terrain. We would like to find some open country where we can do some glassing and get the kids on some bedded animals.
-
oops, the pic needs to be corrected, its actually a sunrise. :bash:
Anyhow Groundhog, A good rule of thumb is to look at Montana like this, for large numbers of big elk SW Montana is a good bet, for large numbers of big deer SE Montana is a good bet. Surely there are both deer and elk together all over the state but its a good rule of thumb to look at it this way. Obviously there are some small areas where this is the exception, like SW Montana in unit 270 for deer and the Breaks for elk. Most of the SE is permit for bulls but cows are there for the taking in most units.
Any public land around Broadus will hold deer, you just need to get off the roads and hike a bit. I would call FW&P and ask to speak with an area biologist, they can give you the best info and I have found them to be very helpful and nice. Good luck.
-
do you guys apply for the block land management ranches?
-
Thank you Huntnphool! That is a big help and gives me somewhere to start. This hunt is about the kids and letting them see some good country and make some meat. They are good hikers so getting away from the roads is not a problem. I need to look into this Cow elk situation as they would be happy with any elk. I really enjoyed your Washington Moose adventure!! I am going to take a lot of pics during our Montana hunt and I will share them with you guys. Thank you again for your help!

groundhog,
The block management system is excellent. If you want public land in the area, get some BLM maps, there is a lot of it in that area. Here's another suggestion. On HY 212 on the way to Broadus, stop in at the National Forest Headquarters in Ashland and pick up a Custer National Forest map, if you don't have one already. About 3-4 miles East of Ashland you'll come to Otter Creek Road. Go south and then branch off into the National Forest land on either Paget Creek Road or Bryan Creek Road. If you go a little further, Otter Creek Road comes into the NFS land. Eventually you will come to Taylor Creek Road. Go East on that and you'll find deer. That area right there was where we used to go fill doe permits. I'm headed that way Sunday, will be in Broadus probably noon Monday.
PS If you hunt that NFS land right there, I would highly suggest having a turkey permit or two. Hint, hint.
-
Forgot this, but if anyone is interested and has some time to kill, there is a great spot to shoot Prairie Dogs south of Broadus about 20 miles or so, all on BLM land. PM me if interested.
-
I wish :'(

I know this area well, have hunted it many times before. There was a fire in the area last year and it burned a good deal of this area, it will be interesting to see how well its recovered.
-
A good deal of that area, especially up around 212, burned about 6 or 7 years ago also.
Does anyone know how the winter kill was in that area? I have read where parts of WY got nailed hard.
-

Sweet, it makes for some awsome hunting over there.
-
The burn area isn't what it used to be. That used to be THE place out there.
Find water and/or does. The bucks will be there.
-
Cant wait to hear how you guys do over here! If you do something like above phool...it'll be better than me! Nice one! Is that the SE country?
-
Is that the SE country?
