We had the deeks set up and the boat brushed in waiting for some ducks. Saw a few eagles around, thought nothing of it. A few buffel heads Came in and we dropped them, before the dog could get to them the eagles stole them. Not once but twice this happened about an hour apart. Lost a few due to those theives, was cool to watch though.

Next time, bring a good camera and get some awesome pics.
I've lost some oldsquaw to seals. I think I'd rather lose them to an eagle.

I have had them take ducks and small geese. I almost had one lost on Saturday to an eagle; but the dog got to it first. Last year I had a flock of speckle bellys bee lining to my hide only to have an eagle take out the lead bird before I could shoot. It was cool to watch; wish I had a camera to document the take down.

I took a few video's on my phone but there was no zoom so you can barely see anything.

I love those moments afield when something happens that I have never witnessed before. That's one of the fun things about being out there!

We have it happen every year out on the base :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
Lost 3 or 4 last year and about the same this year, and the season isn't over yet.
My daughters boy friend called me when I was in Vegas to tell me about how he lost two mallards to the eagle's in one day and all I could do was laugh :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
We have learned, that once they hear the gun shot, to watch out because they are on there way for a easy meal.

sounds like the eagle did you a favor by stealing that bufflehead.

I heard eagles taste like spotted owls. :chuckle:

owl, hawk, or eagle take your pick, they gotta be better to eat than bufflehead.

I hunt one area where i'm pretty sure the sound of a shotgun is a dinner bell to them.

I was going to say something similar. If I could count on eagles stealing buffleheads or mergansers, I would actually go shoot some. :) ;)

Are Mergansers nasty? I shot my first one a couple weeks back, Big Bird, everyone told me, "oh yeah, they're great!, blah blah blah..." So I'm guessing they're not.... Lots of meat tho!

They are a bit stronger tasting than puddle ducks. It actually surprises me how thin the breast meat is for such a large bird, but lots of leg meat. Soak in milk overnight I guess (although I don't) or cook with a flavorful sauce (I use a curry with most of my duck). It's good to get those baby fish eaters out of the water and not waste them.

We have a winner :chuckle: :chuckle:

I lost a speck this year to a badger in Saskatchewan. Never thought I'd see that. My dog was going to wrestle him for it until I called her off.
