Title: Hybrid
Post by: novice870 on December 16, 2012, 09:04:21 AM
I posted this on antoher site, but I wanted to get your thoughts also. Harvested yesterday and ready for the taxi...

Bigger than a "normal" teal, no white stripe on the breast. It has the blue on its bill like a wigeon, and the pinkish color on the breast area...

Regardless, its one beautiful bird.

Mature Greenwing Teal Drake. Just has good color for this time of year. Most ducks don't get their best plumage till breeding season which is late winter/early spring. Pretty bird.

It almost looks like a 3-way  :o :o :o  :chuckle:  :chuckle: Teal, widgeon, and a little pintail.

Agree....speaks a lot of Pintail in there to me.  Smallish feathers on back and the black break at end of white underside is identical to that of a drake Pintail

Beautiful bird, looks like maybe a juvenile Common (Eurasian) Teal as mentioned.  Many of the Google pics show a lighter leading edge to the color wing bar but some are more brown like your.  Even though probably not a hybrid, it is still a rare and awesome bird to harvest.

Pic included from Google.

Unless I'm looking at the picture wrong, the size of the bird is larger than a normal sized teal.

Definitely looks slightly larger, with sharp pintail features, beak, flank and tail end

Maybe I'm missing something but that bird doesn't have the teal Bill, has wigeon violet base of the neck feathers and the inner wing feathers of a pintail. Not to mention the size is different from a teal. seems like a pretty obvious cross to me.  the eurasian teal looks about the same as a normal green winger. My thoughts at least. I apologize if I look stupid.

Is that why you didn't state what kind of duck it was in case you were wrong and might look stupid? :chuckle: Geez some people :dunno:

I really don't think it is a common teal. The bill is totally different. Along with the widgeon neck, which the common teal does not have, and the butt and wings are more like a pintail than the common teal. I am saying no on the common teal :dunno:

I believe this is a hybrid.
But not a wigeon.
The bill and wing span and feathering on back and tail indicate a clear Pintail/Greenwing cross breed.

Never seen one of those.
Very cool find.
Let me guess? You called him in with a whistle? lol....

And I wonder if it counts as a pintail for the daily limit?  hmmm

The story...

On Saturday my son and I decided to go hunt for the afternoon because the forcast was calling for snow starting around 1pm. I have always loved duck hunting in the afternoon and have had some incredible hunts when a snow storm starts. We got set up on a little pond and within minutes the ducks started moving. We both had bagged several mallards each that were decoying like a dream. My son decides to put on more layers of clothes because the snow was really coming down. I look up and there is three ducks locked up...I swore they were wigeon...one pass and they were committed. I shot the furthest one and swung on the other two and got a huge snow flake in my eye...no second or third shot. I send the dog for the one I dropped and he comes back out of the cattails after a few minutes of searching with this duck...I thought, "A teal?! But I shot a wigeon." I send him back in figuring he had found a cripple from somone else, and after 10 minutes he comes out totally defeated, with that look that says, "You're an idiot, I already found him for you." Then I start looking at this duck closer and realize that this was in fact the duck I shot...then I look closer and start to notice the colors amd size. I told my son, "this is one weird looking teal."

The more I look at this duck and think about it, the more special it becomes. I have shot hundreds of ducks and never seriously considered getting a bird mounted before. That all changed on Saturday.

I would say that duck is one out of a million. i hope you find a good taxi and look forward to seeing the mount ;)

I wasn't talking about you as the bird obviously is a cross.

Half are saying without a doubt teal x wigeon and half are saying without a doubt its a teal x pintail.
That means (without a doubt) 50% of the posters here are wrong. :yike:

I just think its funny that SOME of the posters say things with bold certainty instead of saying "I think its a....."
See what I'm saying. To speak so matter of factly while being wrong makes them look foolish.

I can tell you what the bird is but from the looks of the post here............50% of you wouldn't believe me.
