My parents recently moved to Redmond Oregon and we have now been talking about heading down there for an archery elk hunt. My dad has talked to some locals about places to go but I was wondering if any of you guys have hunted the area? If so, what did you think? Any pointers?

Buddy of mine is out of Redmond. He hunts general archery and gets into elk. Where? I have no clue. He does put in for mt.emily for his draw of a lifetime. So he says?

Ochoco unit should be good. It was so popular with the archery hunters that they made it draw only. I don't think it's hard to draw, might take a couple years though.

I think you may run into some issues with access to elk. My uncle has hunted the Ochocos for many years. It is still good, but he has told me that many of the elk spend a lot of time in the private lands down lower and are not accessible.
Fantastic country, I spent a lot of time around Prineville and out towards Burns when I was a kid.

Used to hunt the Ochoco unit for rifle deer until we moved to Murderers Creek. Check out Black Canyon and/or Cottenwood Creek drainage. You will find elk. Got to draw the tag first. Good luck!

My old man has been hearing about Ochoco from the guys he works with. They have been saying that if we really want to hunt it, that we should put in for muzzy because you can draw it about every two years. We are considering that but would prefer to archery hunt.
