Title: Drives me nuts!
Post by: Seabeckian on December 18, 2012, 12:11:23 PM
So we all have that friend that sees 500lb black bears, chases 30" wide deer, and shoots elk that weigh over a 1000lbs regularly. Not to say any of it can't happen, but it can't happen all the time; specifically not only the times when no one else is available to be a witness. I don't understand why people don't judge their animals more humbly. It's not like it makes you less of a man, and personally I would much rather talk to someone about hunting that isn't always blowing smoke. With some of my friends, I don't know whether to blame it on ignorance, poor field judging, or that they are just flat full of crap. Regardless, it still bugs me equally.

How do you guys deal with these comrades? Do you call them out on it, or just allow them to live in their own world as a god amongst men?

Ignorance is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge).

I go with ignorance. Call them out on it, then inform them that they're not as correct as I am.  :chuckle:

Some of the people I know are pathological liers/ exagerators and I choose not to talk to them about much of anything.  My close friends that do this... I call them out.   :twocents:

Most people I know have never caught a steelhead under 10 pounds... mostly they just don't know any better.

Kinda like the same guy that ever year see's a big 6x7 buck, but couldn't get a shot off.  (How do you have time to count points then?)You'd think after 10 years of this story, he'd either kill it, or change the story to a 6x8.  Actually, "tall tales" make me laugh.

Personally, what bugs me worse is when you DO actually get a trophy buck/bull/bear and they talk as if your animal is just average or "OK" sized and then they tell you they "saw a bigger one" the other day and couldn't get a shot off. Seems like no matter how nice your animal was, they know of one better. Some people just have to rain on your parade.

I described the best shot I've ever made in my life: 50 yards downhill through a 10" gap between two trees...into the goodie box of a bull elk.
The guy said, "I could make that shot."
This is the same guy who lost all of his arrows trying to hit a target at 25 yards....

Nothing wrong with a little stretching of things, within reason.              "Early to bed, Early to rise, Fish like Hell, And make up Lies"

Haha. I usually stick with the same tactic. Let their own stories unravel themselves.

Everybody does. But there is a big difference between claiming a bear to be a reasonable 75lbs heavier, compared to saying he is double what he is. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Agreed. I find that almost as agitating. Even more so when its not just a guy being overly modest, but making you feel like your animals are less than par!

I don't have this friend.  Does that mean I'm that guy to all of my friends?
