Title: Winchester 308 Model 88 Lever Action Rifle (pre 1964)
Post by: MtgHunter on September 11, 2008, 08:13:57 PM: I inherited this rifle from my grandfather and I'm looking for scope rings. I've been told by several sporting good stores - good luck finding due to age and not made anymore. Anyone have an idea where I might try? Thanks.

Post by: BENCHLEG on September 11, 2008, 08:28:47 PM: i messed up back in 1991 i had the chance to buy one with the original box for 400.00 and i opted not to to much for me back then. new in the box the only thing done to it was a williams peep. im a fool it was family owned and had only half a box through it i regret that one.great gun keep it good luck J

My Dad bought one while he was stationed in Turkey in 1966, he gave it to me on my 16th birthday. .308 Win Model 88, I absolutely loved that gun. In 1984 I got stationed in England and kept my guns with my Dad while I was over there. In 1988 his house burnt down and I lost the gun, my favorite rifle of all time.

Point and case: A few years back I purchased a Winchester Model 94 .30-.30 w/Tang Safety from Wal-Mart for $296.96 The individual behind the counter told me that it was there last one and it had been sitting on the shelf for a little over three years :drool:

I knew at the time that Winchester had ceased production in Nov/Dec the previous year and this being the gun that won the west I was simply amazed that no one else had scooped it up.

Try and find one today NIB for under a grand.

During this time I also made several other purchases mainly Featherweights and those in the WSSM

I was also fortunate enough to find a NIB Featherweight .270 WSM for just under $800.00 Today try and find one NIB for under $1500.00

I said all that to say that in IMHO you might be better off displaying your rifle than using it........money in the bank plus you can always take em out and fondle them :P

Now my model 88 story. My dad gave one as my first rifle and I used it for a couple of years until our house was burglarized when I was 15. Never saw that rifle again. But then when I was engaged when I was 19 my fiance bought one for me and I killed my 1st bear with it. Its one of my prized possesions. I try to get it out a couple of times a year just to plink. :)

I think I have a spare for mine someplace. havn't seen it in a while. mine is not pre 64, has the newer basket weave stock. Its my go to deer gun when hunting the wetside. Oh paid $350 for it 3yrs ago(use it for thick,close elk too) Great gun, I love them, but for some reason seem to kick a little harder than a bolt. Stock design? :chuckle:

I retired my lever action and went to bolt actions after I moved from the westside to eastern WA. I loved it for hunting blacktails but I needed flatter shooters for muleys. I refinished the stock and it sure is a beauty sitting there in the gun cabinet.

Those are darned hard to come by and worth a few bucks also. If I ever come across one I'm gonna grab it.
