Title: How to fix an old picture of my dads one and only elk
Post by: Pazn25 on December 29, 2012, 07:59:58 PM
So i was digging through some old pictures and came across all of my dads elk pictures that he was always sooooo disappointed in because when he got them developed they had a red haze on them all.  Since them my dad has passed away and i have taken over the picture collection.  do any of you know how to fix this problem?

ask phool or doug to help you, they are both excellent with pictures.

If they are still around Pacific Color in Seattle used to do amazing work with our old photos of Duke Savora.  Some were pretty bad and they really made them look like new. There was also a ProLab and Ivey Seright in Seattle that were first class when I was working up there.  Ivey used to work with a lot of magazine photographers including some of the top National Geographic cameramen.  That's been nearly 20 years ago so who knows if they are still around or if they still work with print photos.

I am pretty sure that Moon Photo is still doing that kind of thing if you wanted it converted to B&W.  I've had them do a ton of work over the years.  They used to be my go to place for B&W work.  Great talents and great pricing back when.

Find someone with a scanner for their computer and they can turn it into a digital picture for you and then you can either try messing with some of the photo programs or if you didn't want to tackle it yourself, a shop may be availible that can.

Best part is, once it is scanned on to your hardrive or a disc/thumb drive, you can make as many copies as you like.  Wal-Mart Photo may have that ability on their do it yourself machines.  Grab a cheap thumb drive and you are good to go.

If you can scan them you can email them to me and I will work on them. If you don't have a scanner you could either snail mail them to me or go to Walgreens, Kinko's etc and get them scanned to digital. Or meet me in the Tacoma area some day to drop them off.

If it's a picture rather than negative or slide, it must first be scanned.  Once you get the image digitized, it can be enhanced and restored.

I'd be glad to help you out if I had the photo or a digital copy.

If you get them scanned, I would be glad to take a cut at them too.  You’ll probably end up with very similar outcomes from all of us, but it will be fun to help you out.

Here are the pics of my dads elk.  There are none with him in the clearcut where he shot him because he was a lone ranger for the hunt and had to pack him out to the truck alone.  Tough day.

I think someone with a better program than I have and a lot more talent could really get the elk pictures nice.  The family picture is going to need a lot of work I expect.  With the darkness and the surface texture you'd probably need someone to air brush or recreate pixel by pixel.

On my screen the elk pics do look very nice in B&W.  As mentioned before I expect Moon Photo could really make some B&Ws that would pop!

BTW those are some very neat photos!  I've got some of my grandfather that are not in the best of shape.  I remember looking through his album as far back as kindergarten.  They are some of my most cherished possessions.

Hey paz, just wanted to say that's an amazing family picture right there!  Is that 4 generations in that pic? Is that little one you?

You might be able to get a negative made from the image and then you can have them put that to disc or whatever else you want to do with it. Go to a custom photo shop.

Here's a brief attempt at one of the photos.  Is the image you posted the original scan size?

Thank you.  These are pics from only 4 years after my dad moved here from Italy, never hunting big game and just getting started.  The biggest he had shot was rabbits and some kangaroo when he lived in Australia for a few years.  I have now lost my father to cancer but the memories live on as I can share these photos with my young boys.

Took a few minutes at lunch on the other 3. Let me know what you think. I can take them further and get rid of the scratches/scan issues as well with time. Also curious what others who do some photo processing (phool) come up with. Great pics by the way.

I gave them a shot. I use photoshop cs and leveled the red out and used some healing brush and clone stamp on some of the pictures impurities.
