We are looking at trading in the old lady's acura and my tahoe to get a nice truck and a commuter car. We would like to get an all wheel drive car for the winter time on the east side but also would like to get something that gets good mileage. Any suggestions? We would also like to find something with the space to tote around our dogs...
-
Don't own one but sounds like a Subaru.
-
Subaru comes to mind..............
-
Been looking at subaru's too and looking at their mpg and they are only rated to get around 20-24 combined. That isn't bad but was hoping I could find a little better.
-
Subaru WRX or Audis or BMW are the only things I can think of. Porsche makes some AWD, but the price compared to the other 3 seems to negate any MPG type argument. I can't think of any other manufacturers...they've missed the ball from what I can tell.

:hello:,

Suzuki Kizashi S
Price: $21,245
Volkswagen Tiguan
Price: $27,400

Also been looking at Audi's but hate trying to find a mechanic for them

BMW AWD sounds good to me!... :yeah:
-
Hell I have been in white outs pushing snow with my civic on I5 no problem, just have good tires, and drive smart.

:yeah: All Honda's do well in adverse weather!! Just not a lot of clearance with the sedans..
-
Ford escape hybrid :dunno:
-
Toyota has some AWD vehicles. We owned a 08 Toyota Highlander with AWD. Loved it and it went everywhere, but we had to give it up for the growing family. We got 20 to 22 mpg depending on the driving. I used it to tow a u-haul trailer (double axle) to AZ and we got 16 to 17 mpg. We now have an '11 Sienna which I love to. It is only front wheel drive, but I have had no issues in the snow (snoqualmie, blues, siskiyous, etc). The Sienna does come in AWD too.

Hands down Subaru Outback. I love ours.

What kind of actual mileage are you getting?

just got our 2011 about 1 month ago. 3 fill ups so far. 24, 23, and 24 so far.
-
We owned one for a while and always got 24-26. I will never own one again after the head gasket issues.
-
We got the wife a Ford Escape and get 22 mpg.
A hell of a lot better then the 12 my truck gets :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
they make a Subi thats rated for 30hwy.. have to look and see which one..
-
My folks have a Suzuki all wheel drive car that gets in the low 30s. Like Gasman said, I think the Escape would be a good option. They are a pretty good daily driver, or can go to the mountains with the family.
-
My company car is an AWD Taurus. Lots of room, 26 mpg, handles awesome.
-
I had an AWD Subaru Legacy a few years ago. It cost less than the Outback and still had AWD. Not the best rig for hauling an elk home from Idaho.
-
Audi A4 23city/30hwy
Lexas IS 250 21/29
Mercury Milan 20/29
Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Outback 20/27 Forester 20/22
Volvo S40, S60 19/28
Suzuki SX4 23/31
My favorite is the A4. I want a WRX or Lan EVO, but they get slightly worse mileage.
Nothing with all wheel drive is going to get good milage compared to 2 WD. Nothing AWD with decent mileage will be a good hunting rig.

Well said.

My mom has been really happy with her Honda CRV. It is all wheel drive, and she gets mid 20's. She has driven it over all the passes during winter with good tires without problems. I would recommend Honda, Nissan or Subaru. Each company offers suvs that are all wheel drive and offer low to mid 20's mpg. You will not find a 30+ awd car that will also give you room for your dogs and let you travel off the pavement far.
-
My wife's next car will be a Acura MDX, good mileage AWD SUV that's reliable and not a fortune to maintain.
-
Just turned in our Toyota RAV4 after a 3yr lease. Got mid 20's mpg. Good groud clearance.Great in snow.Smallest car I know of with third row seating. And they are cheap if you stick to the base model.
-
I had an Audi A4 with the 1.8T that got easily 30 average, up to 33 highway. Also had a Subaru wrx that only got about 20 average. I think VW has some all wheel drive diesel cars? That Audi was my all time favorite car.

My step dad has an older MDX and launches his boat with it each year.... Buries it to the frame, but he lives on the lake so it is a short trip....
-
Dodge Caliber
-
Wife has a VOLVO XC60 great crossover car. About 22-26 MPG

My 2011 2.5i consistantly averages mid 20's. Its a 6spd manual,the CVT gets a couple mpg better.

Doesn't the MDX need Premium gas?
I also like the Honda Pilot.
Our daughter has a Toyota Rav4 all-wheel drive. She has 80k on it with not one mechanical issue. Though it does not seem big, you really can pack allot in that thing. Obviously not going to tow anything over a small boat though.
I have been looking at the six cylinder Durango as well, it has more HP then my current 4.7 Durango does and gets 10 MPG better.
-
Yes, MDX uses premium.
-
Ouch!
-
We have 30k on our '11 forester and we consistently get 24mpg. I would recommend it
-
Subaru’s are great cars, but they are the most overvalued car on the used market. So if you don’t want to buy new, you are going to pay through the nose for them. If you want a great quality sedan that won’t cost you as much, I would go with a Ford Fusion AWD. If you want something with more utility, I would get an Explorer or 4Runner.
You’re kind of SOL if you want a powerful, capable AWD that gets much more than 22 mpg.
-
I'll also add that with the forester, don't expect to be winning any drag races. Fairly gutless, but that's not why we bought it. And yes, they do hold their value
-
If you want to support domestic
The 2013 ford Taurus comes in all wheel drive version with the 4 cylindery 2.0 ecoboost that claims 22 city and 32 hwy.
http://www.ford.com/cars/taurus/specifications/view-all/ (http://www.ford.com/cars/taurus/specifications/view-all/)
And as mentioned the cross-overs are the other way to go. Most of the all wheel drive cars are not commuters. I was impressed to see Ford to this in 2013, and the new Taurus look nice compared to previous years.
-
Both of the Subarus we own(ed) averaged about 26 combined mileage. Our 2004 Legacy sedan still averages that and has 97,000 on it. Does great going over the pass from Seattle. We also had an 2008 Impreza 2.5i that did about the same and had no problems in the snow.
-
Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet...
AWD Dodge charger. 18mpg city/27hwy, roomy and comfortable, plenty of power and a trunk big enough for whatever you wanna hunt!
We have a Subaru Forester. Decent mpg, usually mid to high 20's, but man those things were made for women! I'm only 5'10, and I am pretty cramped in there. I can't extend my legs fully even with the seat all the way back, and the arm rests are crap. It's my wife's car, and she loves it, but if I was the primary driver for that vehicle I would have gotten something else.
-
We have a Honda CRV year 2005 awd.. I get 21 -22 around town and 25 - 27 on the open road. It has been all over the state in all kinds of weather (I do run studded snow tires for the passes) and it handles great. Not a stump jumper but I only hunt turkeys now. No more than 4 adults or two adults and 3 children with any comfort. Great little car. No comment on our Pilot for mileage!
-
we have an 07 freestyle awd that averages about 24.

I know this is an older car so probably not what you are looking for, HOWEVER 80-85 subaru wagon 4wd gets about 28-30 mpg hwy. I know because my brother has had 5 of them. I currently have a 85 subaru bratt that gets about 25mpg + on my short commute to work. I know the 86-90ish subarues get pretty good mileage but you have to dump most of the BS emissions stuff. There is a club here that wheels the 80-90 vintage.
This board will tell you EVERYTHING about any vintage of Subaru. It is known as the USMB

The Dodge magnum comes in awd. Man I love the look of that station wagon!
-
We just got a Jeep Patriot. It was about 4k less then the Subaru Forester we were looking at and we get 26 MPG.

My inlaws have a 2011 Forester. Mid 20's mpg and enough room to haul her 250 lb. dairy goats around if needed. I drove it a time or 2. At 6'4" there's plenty of room in it for me. It does well in the snow too. They live at 3000'+ in the Blue Mountain foothills.

Jackalope, how is the new Durango holding up maintenance wise?

Not too bad so far. Haven't seen many miles on them yet but so far pretty good. Couple electrical issues here and there. Nothing major.

Thank for your insight!

ive been looking at the new subaru crosstrek. rated at 33mpg hwy. 9in of ground clearance. basically a lifted imprezza wagon
