Post by: enaz on January 01, 2013, 09:24:06 AM
Has anyone seen any blacktail that have shed at all yet? I was late on a honey hole last year and wanne be ahead of the game. I've heard old timers say they've seen em off in december but I figured most drop late jan- feb. Is it worth going out and looking yet?

A few years ago I shot what I thought was a doe on Dec 30th, well it was a buck that had already lost his antlers and it was a nice size doe. :bash: :bash: I surely woundn't have shot him if I knew it was a buck, I never did find his antlers. So, I would check your honey holes every weekend starting now.

trophyhunt, how the heck are you guys finding blackie sheds? :chuckle:

With all the time I have spent in the westside woods, I should have more, somebody must have beat me to them! Muley sheds are a breeze in comparison!

I probably spend waaay tooo much time in the woods looking for them, I hike through the thickest crap I can find. My best find was from a deer that I missed during the rifle season and I found his antlers that december and January. Luck is the only reason I find some sheds but it does take a ton of days not finding a damn thing, just being in the woods makes those days worth it. I guess I should have put my blacktail sheds up for sale too but man it's hard to get rid of them considering how hard they are to find. Maby some day.

I wander if blacktail sheds get eatin up by coyotes, timber tigers, porky pines, and what not alot quicker on this side. As much time as I spend in the woods I only have 8-10 sheds.
Last year was the first time that I actually went out to "just find sheds", and I didn't find any. I think a dog would be great on the west side.

I'm going to try training my golden retriever to find them. She'll probably find them before I will. Haha. she chews on caribou antlers all year long so she may already have some idea of scent.

Went out yesterday just to scope it out. Saw 6 or 7 bucks, with one 2 point missing one side. the base was black like it had been shed for a little while, I thought maybe torn off while fighting with another buck? I'll be hitting it hard the next couple months. I hope to find a few this year.
