The m&p is a good gun. I personally don't like the way it fits my hand, but that's completly subjective. Love XD's and the new XDS. Both are great guns and probably can't go wrong with either.

I had one of the M&P's when they first came out. It was very picky on ammo (the cheap target stuff wouldn't go bang). Maybe they have fixed that issue. I now own two XD's and would love to pick up one of the new XDS's. My vote is for the XD  :)

my vote would be the XD, trigger is a little better, and xd has the grip safety- which makes it easy to put the thumb on the back of the slide when reholstering, and eliminates the worry of something getting in the way of the trigger.. both are good guns though- see which fits you better..

I have the XDM 45acp with the 4.5" barrel Only thing I have changed on it was the factory sights. I installed the Trijicon HD night sight. This gun has shot really well for me. very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. IT shoots good with factory as well as reloads. Easy to fieled strip and clean. I like the backstrap and trigger safety. The XDM version comes with interchangeable backstraps to tailer your grip depending on grip size.

Either one, whichever you like more.  Kind of a Ford/Chevy thing.
