Went upland hunting out east shot my butt off and didnt get one bird. Buddy spotted a porkie up in a tree so I end up with something. 2nd one this year. There gaurd hairs make them look alot cooler in the winter. Im debating on wheather i should just tan it. I taned the last one or try to life size it.

nice... I used to see lots of porkies here on the wetside in the 80s & early 90s but I have not seen one in over 10 yrs ...

I want to life size one. That looks cool.

Were you pheasant hunting with the smokepole?
-
Pheasent and quail. I was shooting at Quail about every 20 min just could not get it done. Seen a few pheasents no cocks though. Never shot birds with a muzzleloader before Figured Id start going muzzle only for every thing. So I cut open some shot gun shells put the lead shot in a crown royal bag. And went from Dawn till dusk I think I hit one but it was so brushy and the dog had trouble getting the wounded bird.

Thats awesome!

Heres the west side bear hunting porkie from this year.

Those long tri-colored guard hairs = $$$

Yeah pluck that long hair on there back and sides. Keep anything 5" plus you will avg about 15-18.00 a oz. Most pigs have about 1/4-1/2oz depending on the time of year. They are supposed to be o.k eatting. My buddy will be eatting one this spring.

I know a small taxi who does a lot of porcupines. He's done a few for Cabela's and other big customers. Evidently there aren't lot of taxi's who like messing with them.

my life size porky is my favorite mount i have

They do taste good, a lot like rabbit, cook the same way. Bird hunting with a ML is a challenge, it really helps you practive follow through on your shots since you will always be shooting behind with the lock delay if you don't. I got my first dove and my first and only Ruddy Duck with a double barrel 12 gauge.

I think I would have had a better shot with a shotgun muzzleloader. I was using a 45 caliber with rifled barrel. Had to make fast shots or the spread went everywere. I think I might try to pick up a 10 guage smokepole before turkey season.

I've heard that is a problem trying to shoot shot out of a rifled barrel, it spins the bb's out at the shot. I wouldn't bother with a 10, you can always pack more bb's into your barrel. :chuckle: I missed one a couple years ago with mine, misjudged the distance and squeezed off the modified barrel instead of the full. :'(

Porkies can be very good eating. Ate a couple when in high school. The small one was very good fried. A very large one was very tough. A professor I had at Eastern said they have a very high parasite load, cook well.
