Smoke pole Porkie
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:58:41 PM »
Went upland hunting out east shot my butt off and didnt get one bird. Buddy spotted a porkie up in a tree so I end up with something. 2nd one this year. There gaurd hairs make them look alot cooler in the winter. Im debating on wheather i should just tan it. I taned the last one or try to life size it.

Pheasent and quail. I was shooting at Quail about every 20 min just could not get it done. Seen a few pheasents no cocks though. Never shot birds with a muzzleloader before Figured Id start going muzzle only for every thing. So I cut open some shot gun shells put the lead shot in a crown royal bag. And went from Dawn till dusk I think I hit one but it was so brushy and the dog had trouble getting the wounded bird.

Those long tri-colored guard hairs = $$$
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Yeah pluck that long hair on there back and sides. Keep anything 5" plus you will avg about 15-18.00 a oz. Most pigs have about 1/4-1/2oz depending on the time of year. They are supposed to be o.k eatting. My buddy will be eatting one this spring.

Thats a nice big porcupine.  Nice long guard hairs.  Congrats on the smokepole kill1  :IBCOOL:

I want to life size one.    That looks cool.

I know a small taxi who does a lot of porcupines.  He's done a few for Cabela's and other big customers.  Evidently there aren't lot of taxi's who like messing with them.

They do taste good, a lot like rabbit, cook the same way.  Bird hunting with a ML is a challenge, it really helps you practive follow through on your shots since you will always be shooting behind with the lock delay if you don't.  I got my first dove  and my first and only Ruddy Duck with a double barrel 12 gauge.
