Title: Salmon vs steelhead anglers
Post by: duckmen1 on January 10, 2013, 12:00:35 PM
In you opinion are steelhead anglers more laid back than salmon anglers.i fish a ton for salmon and its always rude and battle for a fish. When I go steelhead fishing even when it's packed it seems for the most part people are more laid back. I think it's because people seem to use a lot of different presentations and not just the skokomish presentation of cast and jerk, or the other rip and hook.  :chuckle:
I love trying new presentations on steelhead and salmon.

Salmon fishermen are trying to fill the freezer with meat, so you get every yahoo in the countryside with an Ugly Stick on the river.

Steelhead fishermen, are fishing because they like to fish...

Most do both. I stay out of battle zones...

ill second what Huntbear said

salmon season always seems to be a race to see who can catch the most fist where steelhead fishing seems to a lot more relaxed.

i fish both and always get burned out on the salmon battle and fishing in the armada of boats,  steelhead fishing is just more relaxing and more pleasant people on the water

Salmon season and the flossing brigade drive me nuts.

I much prefer the season, conditions, and anglers I run into during steelhead season.

I still fish the rivers for salmon but I have different expectations going in.

Steelhead tends to be C and R while Salmon tends to be fill the freezer.    I think this changes the dichotomy of the fishery.

Steelhead guys have class, salmon guys...... :chuckle:

I generally fish steelhead and would prefer no company, but most people I run into steelhead fishing are pretty good.

Please don't mistake "salmon fisherman" with people who actually fish for salmon

:yeah: I've seen things get nasty during steelhead season too, its usually from the "salmon fisherman" fckfords mentioned at combat areas. If I didn't want eggs for steelhead fishing I'd never even fish for salmon. :twocents:

Steelhead anglers use gear to catch em , salmon anglers use floss!

It all depends on the river system, and in most cases the section of the system to determine the type of fishermen you'll run into.
Some of the rudest people I've met on the water have been "elite" steelhead fisherman in their "secret" fisheries. And by elite I really mean elite...the guys who are know the world over for steelhead fishing.  :bash:

When bit by the steelhead bug, you'll give up salmon fishing.  We're not laid back, were just sick sick sick!  Never catch one on the fly, or it's over, no turning back.

i fish for both and treat them one and the same.  but i do get the point, especially when we're talking about goat rodeos like the puyallup and skokomish.

the funny thing is the "salmon fishermen" as they're being called here usually use gear and tactics more suited to steelhead, for example a steelhead will be much more willing to hit a corky and yarn than any king or silver, especially if they'd shorten their leaders down to about 18" :)  of course, that'd involve having a little patience for one to actually bite, so that's probably out of the question.

I find that when fishing in crouds (salmon or steelhead) you'll get all the jerks. I try to stay away from the crouds. I don't find nearly as many poor sportsman like folks and still do very well.

I do fish the Puyallup because it is 5 min from my house and I need the eggs for steelhead season.   And now I use them for Springer fishing.

Now the goat rodeo called the Puyallup Pink run has some pretty rude people.  HuntBear put it correctly that they are there to fill their freezer with those nasty pink salmon.  Some are just arrogent look at me I can snag 12 fish in two hours with my 11 feet of leader.

BUT, when I just need the eggs I try to give away all my fish.  I can tell you the Russians and the Mexicans who just want the fish would take your fish and made a spot for you in the line once they know they get your fish...

Puyallup is a crazy place!!!   This year I will have my GoPro so it will be fun to show all the chaos that goes on down there.

The only thing I do like down there is the little kids fishing for pinks...  They get all wound up and excited.  It is fun to watch them hook up with their trout rod.

I got nothing either!  I do a lot more Steelhead fishing than I do Salmon fishing, but I guess what sets me apart is I own an Ugly Stick! :dunno: :chuckle:

I have seen the worst of both crowds, Puyallup for pinks, Skokomish for kings, or Tokle Creek for Steelhead = same same

Yeah but what if the hardware guys catch twice as many fish as the elitist flyfishermen? Is there a difference between true and better :dunno:

as an elitist fly fishermen / spey rod enthusiast all I can say is:

elitist fly fishermen and hardware guys aren't in the same league. they aren't even playing the same game.  the "true fisherman" wants to fill the freezer and get the decks bloody, since catching food is at the heart of fishing they will use the most effective tool for the job. fly fishing is about the challenge, and let me tell you, whe can make fishing at a trout farm challenging.
I used to think of the fly fishers as artists at what they do, but I have come to know a few gear heads who are no less artistic in their piscatorial pursuits. I think at the end of the day all that is important is fun and if you had any.

I agree with you on this...  My son was soo burned out on catching chum that he grabbed his 6 weight fly rod and started fishing for them with a pink fly.  He hooked up and spent the next 30 min trying to get the fish in without breaking his line.  He said it was way more fun and he enjoyed himself fishing like that...

Salmon fishermen are fishing for meat to put on the bar b que.  Steelhead fishermen are just out fishing because they don't really expect to catch anything anyway unless it's the third tuesday of the second month and they had their wallet in their left hip pocket upside down.  It's just a relaxing day in the outdoors and if you stood in an ice-cold river without a fishing rod in your hand they would put you in the hospital for a mental eval.

B/A content, average sleep, quantity of gear, type of gear, expected miles to be traveled on foot, amount of defensive weapons, and of course the type of rags im wearin.
- Steelhead is light efficient breathable gear, light pack, simple redundant pack of tackle ;water, water purifier, snack foods, underwater vid cam, headlamp, max defensive weapons(BFE defense), and a fishin pole, phone with precache already set on the map app....bout it.
- Salmon, clothes:atypical 'in-style' hillbilly gear, some poles, some beers, some boots, some elbowing, some yellin, some fishing

both fun. Gotta love this state. Start out 'greened up' to the feet up for less traveled steelies, looking like some kind of lost yuppy eco tourist....drive few hours down the road and you can slip into full on...I'zzz raised in Eatonvillleee YAR! lets floss some salmon....and get shhwasted (public disclaimer, your never too drunk to pick up your own mess). Remember that children.
