I just got back from the Seattle meeting. The meeting had to be moved across the street from the garden Room to a hangar to accommodate the crowd of around 200 mostly aging hipsters that showed up. I was pleasantly surprised by the presentation except it made no mention of the damage lower 48 wolves have done to ungulates and focused on livestock depredation. Mike Jimenez was good; he didn't sugar coat anything. Carter Niemeyer sounded professional but he couldn't resist playing to the pro-wolf crowd (he basically took credit for reintroducing wolves, smirking after applause, "On behalf of the wolves, I thank you."). He again said, "We don't have a wolf problem, we have a people problem ... the people are unwilling to move, pack up and leave, that's the problem." Donny M. did pretty well but he was trying to stay out of trouble; but he admitted their were 11 wolf packs in the state now (8 confirmed and three suspected) but his slide listed 13. The intent of the meeting was obviously to reassure the pro-wolf crowd that the wolves are already recovered, are here to stay, and that they should support control measures that now have to be taken (such as destroying the Wedge Pack), and to encourage the pro-wolf crowd to be tolerant of ranchers and other people that actually live in the rural areas and are stewards of the land. But the Seattle pro-wolf crowd was having none of it. Their questions showed that most of the people at the meeting are what I call Lifestyle Hypocrites; they demand all day long that everyone must be tolerant and support THEIR lifestyle but they refuse to be tolerant of the lifestyles of others. BOTTOM LINE: The Seattle crowd doesn't care how far above recovery the wolf population gets; they will do everything they can to prevent the hunting/trapping of wolves in this State. The Seattle crowd sees ungulate population surplus as wolf food and doesn't care if hunters get to hunt. Finally the Seattle crowd doesn't really think ranchers should be allowed to graze livestock on public land or that if they are they should be required to use only nonlethal (expensive and ineffective?) measures to protect their stock. It left me wondering, "Are all these people vegetarians? How much are they willing to pay for a pound of beef?
-
Thank you for going and giving us an up to date on this. Also I have heard people say that there have been sitings in the MT. ST. Helens area, not sure if they are there. Just wondering?
-
Yes, thank you for going to the meeting. I didn't even know there was going to be one but I was on Jury duty anyhow. I'm sick of Seattle dicktating to the rest the state! :bash:

couldn't agree more annette

Yeah, it occurs to me that wolves are pretty good agents to enable the extreme Left to force social change in the areas they do not live in/dominate politically (and they work 24/7 for free!). If the Left wants to force ranchers, outfitters and people who like to hunt, off the land in an area like the Rocky Mountains (Yellowstone to Yukon) they can get their crowd of pro-wolf people in cities to pass State laws that will make it happen. After Federal depredation compensation dries up, they can use wolves, 'nonlethal control measure' requirements, phaseout of public land grazing etc. to raise the cost of ranching so that ranchers can't make a profit and sell their land to Lefty environmental groups or back to the Government.

what are the 3 new "confirmed" packs?
-
I don't think westsiders should have a vote on eastern Washington wolf problems, especially Seattle hippie, treehugger, maggots.

I thought the Huckleberry pack has been around a while. Are they really just confirming it? I saw tracks and was talking to a USFS person about them three years ago.

I agree that is why I put the question mark. I they where recently confirmed as breeding is my guess.

There might be a silver lining with this wolf thing. I don't see any way they will be able to control wolves on the west side of the mountains without using steel traps. They can't use the excuse that they are cruel since they used Newhouse 114's with teeth to catch the wolves that they originally relocated to Idaho and Wyoming. The research shows that traps with teeth actually cause less damage than traps without teeth. The punctures caused by the teeth promote blood flow which is a good thing. Donny M. showed a picture of them setting a long spring to catch one of the Wedge pack wolves in order to collar it. He said in his presentation that it was padded; it sure didn't look like it. If it wasn't, I wonder how they could have legally used it??? I realize that antis are most likely reading this post too. I really don't think we have anything to hide. We need to take a page from Mike Jimenez's book and call it like it is.

how is that the wdfw can use traps a silver lining? the general public isn't ever going to get to use em!

I did. It says "I don't think westsiders should have a vote on eastern Washington wolf problems, especially Seattle hippie, treehugger, maggots." You didn't exclude, you just added especially to a certain group.

So, how many confirmed packs in WA now? Still 8 or has it grown?

If it's that important to you that there is no liberal input into wolf management, then you should probably look at moving to Wyoming.

It's good to see rational thinking!! :bash:

Here we go again. Picking apart a statement to start a fight so you westsiders can control the eastside wolf problems. I stand by my post and could care less what you guys think or say.

Some of us (or a lot of us) westsiders have owned property in eastern WA. for many, many years Campmeat. Probably longer then you have lived on the east side. That is what I am trying to say. Where we live does not change how we think.
Now, does anyone know how many packs are they confirming now. Last I heard it was 8 although there were 5 black wolves seen just down the road frrom my place (another thread) recently.

They made it pretty clear at the wolf meeting that once the recovery goals are met, there will then have to be a general wolf season, and they should be managed the same as all other hunted wildlife. they made it a point that you can't just manage for individual animals (the one that's killing livestock for example). So my point is: If the WDFW can use steel traps in a humane manner to capture wolves for collaring, then they sure can't use the excuse that those same traps aren't humane if us trappers are using them.

It has nothing to do with wdfw, I-713 voter approve intiative trumps the wdfw so just like hound hunting cougars, the wdfw can use them, but the rest of us won't get to use em!

My question is were you a backwards thinking liberal when you lived on the Westside? Since you think we all are? As far as telling me to grow up, you should look in the mirror. YOU are the one that repeatedly makes these ignorant comments. You sound like a child.Your comments are even more ludicrous because you are from the Westside I get sick of hearing your asinine comments about westsiders. I live on the Westside and I HATE wolves. So next time THINK before you post...

I too am a west sider too. And I do not want wolves. I hunt big game in eastern WA.

I was told their is "officially" 8 packs total with 3 "suspected" packs. All on the eastside.

There is no provision in I-713 that will allow the WDFW the use of non-padded foothold traps. Again: my point is they won't be able to use the excuse that foothold traps are inhumane WHEN THEY/WE GO TO THE LEGISLATURE TO REPEAL/ AMEND I-713. When dogs, llamas, horses, kids, etc start getting eaten in Issaquah there will be pressure to make a change. Shooting them from helicopters won't work on the west side, you can't tree them with hounds, boot hunters might take a few, that leaves trapping.
-
and just like cougars only the game dept will get to do it, on problem animals!

Correct, that is how Donny said it but his slide had names for 13 packs so I got a little confused.
-
I think it will be different with wolves. The methods used on cougars aren't going to work on wolves. The wolf lovers will be crying their little eyes out, but the general public will be terrified of the wolves (not that there is that much to be worried about, unless you're on their menu). Cougars are rarely vocal, but a pack of wolves howling in Issaquah; I can hardly wait. :chuckle:
-
The Walla Walla pack and Hozomeen pack spend the majority of their time outside of WA and are not counted as a result. Seems like they should count, but that's just me.

king county has more people in it than all eastern washington pretty much! and history shows king county and the majority of big counties on the west side vote liberal on almost EVERY THING!....the problem is whatever king county votes for the whole state has to deal with their *censored*ty liberal decisions everytime! us on the east side get tired of trying to vote because it doesnt matter we dont have enough votes on the east side to even coome close to the liberal vote just in king county by its self

Yes that is what they briefed, but Donny got cornered during the question and answer period and had to say that those who didn't want the wolf to be declared a 'game animal' after recovery goals are met, could pressure the game Game Commission (you know that group that hasn't been confirmed by the State Senate and includes a supposed 'hunter' who actually works for Conservation Northwest) to not do it and/or to not allow hunting of wolves. My impression was that was what Seattle/West-side pro-wolf people want to do. I hear Idaho can't pass a State initiative unless it gets a majority in all or most of the counties. Is it too late for WA to do something like that? WA Sportsmen and ranchers will continue to be oppressed by Westside tyranny until we do something like that.
-
i just started another thread, about this cause the way i see it 1)hunting isnt working in idaho or montana and won't be enuff here either! 2)Trapping is like cougars and hounds will not be allowed in enough capacity!

I heard back during the 2010? elections that included the state income tax initiative about it restructuring the state. What I heard, was that most of these high tech companies with the high pay (Microsoft, Amazon, etc) that attract much of the liberal element were prepared to uproot and move had it passed. Supposedly a few were to head to Austin, Tx and/or Tuscon, Az. The guy talking about it mentioned how most of the services specifically supporting them would likely fold or move too. Also mentioned that most money raised in this that for 'causes' came from employees from the companies that would likely have moved. And the result would have been a change in the voter structure for the state overall. It was kind of a trade of keep lots of business in the state and keep it left leaning or have business leave the state in significant numbers, a state income tax and have the politics sway to the right.
-
A state of Eastern Washington would solve many of these issues... Just sayin...

Considering that eastern Washington is a net taker in terms of tax revenue I'd have to say that would cause all sorts of problems. Western Washington could justify a tax cut in that scenario however.

There is some truth to this.
However, don't go thinking that an income tax is going to solve your problems. Take a look at a place like the state of New York. They have an income tax and sales tax and that state makes Washington look downright Conservative often.
This state has always been split politically, even before the days of high tech...

1. What is the right of self determination worth to you? I'd gladly pay a little more in taxes in trade. However I don't think it would be necessary if we weren't paying for all of the crap that the liberal left side of the state wants.
2. Take away all of the mandates that the state puts on counties and local municipalities and then kicks money back to them for compliance, the equation changes a bit.
3.

There were some articles on it at the time (I googled it). It was really more of a concern than anything based on fact. The problem is it's hard to move talent and cheap hydro power virtually assures high tech will be here for many years to come.
If anything the influx of high tech employees from other parts of the country and the spin offs from the industry has led to more Conservative minded people moving into the state and if taxes are an issue to so many high tech employees that also means a fair number of them are probably not very Liberal.
Regardless, state income tax will always be DOA here. Never gonna happen.

Big difference between being conservative, and being "conservative" only when it comes to your own pocket book!

I aiways thought that was strange myself hirshey. How many wolves were involved in your incident? It seems the lookout pack has been seen north, south, east and west of the Methow area. I thought the claim was that pack was down to only 2 wolves now. That's a lot of area and a lot of sightings for a pack of 2.

There are alot of unregistered voters and people that just don't vote. I think if Eastern WA folks would get out and vote and register to vote that that would help some too.
I am a westsider by location but that's about it.

Thanks for the wolf meeting report.
You are spot on in your analysis. I worked in the same building in N VA as the USFWS. I remember riding the elevator with USFWS managers and employees. I would over hear conversations about wolf introductions and making hunting as a part of wildlife conservation obsolete. This progressive liberal USFWS service bureaucrats hated firearms and hunting and wanted the western states to be a big national park .
The wolf agenda was started IMO to end or greatly reduce hunting opportunities. Interesting when speaking with the wolf luvers to note almost all are for banning firearms too.
Yeah, it occurs to me that wolves are pretty good agents to enable the extreme Left to force social change in the areas they do not live in/dominate politically (and they work 24/7 for free!). You're right.... you went to Nathan Hale... which is also in Seattle. As for eastsiders being victims of the westsiders, how do live with yourself knowing you victimized those poor eastsiders most of your life. Seeing as you were a westsider....
Your just plain ol' jealous you can't live here....hahahaha !!!!
Well, that was a well thought out retort....  and no not jealous. Just sick of your ignorant drivel that you spew about westsiders.

Your an immature jerk is all I can say. Let it go. You're not proving a point except showing how immature you really are. I pretty tired of this myself, so let it be.

ENOUGH ALREADY! NO NAME CALLING OR CHARACTER BASHING!
IF YOU CAN'T SAY SOMETHING NICE, DON'T SAY IT AT ALL. YOU CAN HAVE A 'DISCUSSION', EVEN IF OPINIONS ARE DIFFERENT. STATE YOUR POINT AND BE DONE WITH IT. MANY PEOPLE HAVE A DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW ON MANY THINGS. LIVE WITH IT!
